Zook said Davis worked hard otherwise and never had another negative incident. ''I love the kid -- he's like my son,'' Zook said. ``He worked as hard as anyone I've coached. Vontae is a great person, will do whatever he's asked. He's very coachable, was well-respected here. When the rumor came out about failing a drug test, even our players said no way he would do that.''

Rocky RaccoonmoderatorI've been saying since he was drafted that any character issues he had weren't a big deal and were easily fixable. He does seem like a good, hard working kid. He will be a perfect fit for this team if he keeps that up.

To me Sean Smith is a bigger project then Vontae, 12 reps on the bench is just pathetic, he really needs to hit the weight pile or do pilaedes or whatever, he'll be trucked weekly if he goes into the season that weak.
exactly, i am sure that Davis is already 'plugged' in as a starter in the minds of the FO ... especially when you look at what he has to compete with .... Smith gets a year to develop, so that he is prepared to take over for Allen next year (hopefully, he'll get some time at nickel)
GARDENHEADsubscriberWhat else is Zook supposed to say? The guy needs Vontae to succeed in order to recruit. How many Illinois players get drafted in the 1st round? Not a whole lot. Therefore, he's gotta defend his only stud prospect.

While this is of course very nice to hear and i dont really doubt it, theres not many college coaches who are not gunna praise their former players.
