This morning around 5AM EST, Resident Evil 5 (360) hit the streets and in the hands of wanna-be hackers everywhere. This includes The Mor. I did get the game, but have not played it. Now I'm in a position I always fins myself in.... I just got to work, and there's a shiny super-hyped game waiting for me at home. So, in an effort to keep me entertained... What do you guys think of RE5?
Looks like RE4 in HD with bad controls if the we're going by the demo. But I won't judge a game solely by the demo, so hopefully the finished product impresses me more.
My Initial Reaction to RE5` I played RE5 for the better part of 4 hours last night. Here's what I took away from it: 1. RE5 co-op is a helluva lot more fun than RE5 alone. 2. RE5 is no longer a survival horror game. It's not even a survival/action game like RE4 was. It's a straight on action game now. Very little back tracking, searching, or adventuring in this game. It's pretty much: Collect ammo and destroy anything that moves. 3. It has a very tacky story that's trying to bring up crap as far back as Resident Evil 1 (Y'know, back when the game was about exploration and had a scary plot...) But the story isn't bad. 4. Here's my loser point, but I don't care. The chick in the game is perfect in every way. If I met her in real life I'd make babies with her. 5. The shotgun rules all. 6. The graphics are great. But the voice sync is way off at times. Never experienced any frame skipping or slowdown. 7. Like all games these days there are a few annoying quick-time events that catch you WAY of guard. I hate that. Any questions??
That is why the series is starting lose it for me. I still like the game and all, but its just not the same. I was kinda disappointed everyone was raving about RE4 because I was afraid they would continue to go away from the exploration and such of the REs of the past. I loved the RE1 remake on the Game Cube check it out if you are able to.
So it sounds like they're taking away the things that make the Resident Evil series stand out. That's disappointing.
Being a hardcore RE fan since it originally came out, I agree with many of the sentiments here regarding the old style so highly. I had to accept RE4's changes simply because of my fanboyism to the series and I was pleasantly surprised to find that RE4 was very enjoyable in it's own way. While that never previously eroded my disdain for not having more classic RE games, more recently some of that has been relieved. There is a recent interview floating around out there with the lead producer of RE5(remember the original creator of RE had no part in RE5) where he acknowledges this very thing. Not only does he mention the good possibility of revisiting the old gameplay that RE was known for, but he also brought up how "aware" Capcom is of fan's urge to have them continue on doing "ReMake" updates to their previous games, specifically mentioning RE2. With how the RE storyline has developed from the beginning of the series to it is currently, it actually kind of works with the more recent games leaning towards action gameplay. Going after Umbrella, attempting to physically destroy the Umbrella corporation lends more towards action gameplay than investigating mysterious mansions & the "adventure" style of old RE. I would love nothing more from Capcom than to go back Re:Making their other titles in updated technology, while maintaining the classic RE feel. The previous ReMake was more than just new graphics/animation though, a good size of the game was entirely different, with lots of additional content. For those of you RE fans who own a Wii, I highly suggest picking up RE:Remake & RE:Zero for the Gamecube, though you will need a gamecube controller obviously. Those games were the last classic RE games to be released, and I found them to be great. Personal Ranking: 1.Resident Evil & Re:Make 2.Resident Evil:Code Veronica 3.Resident Evil 2 4.Resident Evil 4 5.Resident Evil 3 6.Resident Evil 0 Honorable Mention: Resident Evil Outbreak & File 2(aka Resident Evil Online). Way ahead of it's time, but if you got with the right people this game was something special. Outbreak & RE:0's gameplay elements are what lead to the infusion of Coop into RE5.
Visit http://www.gametrailers.com/game/10620.html for a great retrospective of the RE franchise. Very nostalgia inducing , and covers even the obscure titles.
That is the direction the series took with RE4 though. It is a continuation of that success. BTW, when you finish the game- let us know about the bonus mode. Is it coop version of Mercenaries from RE4 or something else?
Funny you mention that one. It was really the only "tough choice" I had with the listing. I kind of wanted to put them both the same, but ultimately I thought about CV's plot & unique boss fights(snipe the beating heart!) and I gave it the slight edge. The characters in CV were unforgettable. Alfred/Alexia Ashford & Steve Burnside are still some of my favorite supporting characters ever in the series. There's also a lack of Wesker in RE2. Still though, RE2 is great and my first choice for another RE:Make. They could finally do what they intended to all along, which is to have a larger emphasis on Racoons city streets & it's urban environment.
Put in a few more hours last night. Here's some more things I took away from it: 1. I hate Quick Time Events. Especially when the game has no QTE's until 1+ hours in. And if you HAVE to add QTE's at least make the on screen indicator CLEAR as to what the hell you want me to press. 2. This game should be called Gears of Evil. There has been a rail shooting level and a boat driving level. There really isn't any exploring or horror at all. It is fun, but not a typical RE game by any stretch. Fans will either embrace this change, or reject it. 3. We've already found a glitch. If you load you character to play early levels over again, you keep your weapons and upgrades you earned later in the game. And you can continue building up. So technically, you can play levels 1 and 2 over and over gain to collect money to build your guy all the way up. If you have questions, shoot.
I wouldn't spend $60 on it. For me, I could never play this game alone. It's far too pointless for me. People that care about the RE story line will love it. There's a lot of crap about the dumb company and conspiracies and cover ups. Again, imo the RE storyline is something they stretched to death when Capcom realized the game sells. It's just too tacky for me. That being said, the game is a BLAST co-op. I can't stress that enough. The primary objective of a video game is to have fun. When playing with a friend, it delivers. Big time.
Did I seriously ask The Mor, aka the king of "downloads", if he would spend $60 on a game? Getting serious now, thanks for all the points. I played the demo and the game seemed like a bore but no doubt with a friend or online co-op it could be a blast. Overall though it seems like a pass for my own purchase.
Are you sure you want to be Mor-cuit City? If you are, then when can we come buy and pick up some gear at 75% off? I think you should sell and become Mor Buy, hhMor, or Morstop.
This game is so shooter oriented I don't know why the hell they restrict you from moving while aiming. Probably to maintain that "tightness" feel of the RE series. Dumb move. If you're gonna make a shooter, make it right. Almost done with it though.
Did you even play RE4? After reading your critiques I'm having a hard time thinking you did, though you are obviously quite familiar with the previous entries of the series. From the gap in launches between RE4 and RE5 did you really expect them to completely change the way their immensely successful series is controlled? There has only been 1 RE game ever where you can move & shoot, and it was probably the most unsuccessful RE game ever made(Outbreak File 2). It's just frustrating to see so many people expecting Capcom to stray from their root design more so than they already did when they launched RE4. Especially considering that RE4 was the last title made by the original creator of the series. He laid the groundwork for his successors to work from, but had they all the sudden made the game controls into Gears of War - it would have been completely pissing on the franchise. There would be only one way I would ever be ok with them adding in "running while shooting", and that is if they made it extremely inaccurate & wastefully stupid to the point nobody would bother doing it. What do you think the purpose of running & shooting is for your buddies in the SEALS program? It's not accuracy, it's suppression(I.E. moving to cover). What in the hell would be the point of suppressing infected enemies that are fearless & suicidal like the Majis, Ganados, or Zombies? While Gears of War may allow running & shooting....they have their own mechanic where you are forced to take cover or die. So even in that case, running and shooting is nearly useless. RE4 sold over 6 Million copies with the same control scheme(actually less refined)...but they didn't make it "right"?
I did play RE4. I didn't finish RE4 because I couldn't deal with the controls. Again, I probably would have stopped playing this one too had it not been for co-op. I also understand that RE4 was very successful. I'm not faulting them, I'm just a fan of old RE games. And when I play shooters, I'd like to be told I'm playing a shooter. And shooter controls would be nice. And this one is even MORE of a shooter than RE4 was. At times, this thing feels like Dead Rising Edit: The Wii version of RE4 was a little more tolerable. But still not enough for me to play through it.
Honestly, if I were looking for a co-op game, I would spend money on Saints Row 2 or... cannot believe I'm saying this... 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. RE is meant to be played alone at midnight in a dark room. Except for 1. 1 is meant to be played on YouTube so you can laugh at Barry's stupid dialog.
lol i seriously Lawled just now. I actually have the new 50 cent game... LOL No way. It's a fun co-op game because of the ammo management and the ridiculous situations you're in. It's usually you guys surrounded by a zillion zombies. And some half baked way to get out. The bosses are actually pretty cool too. Half of the fun is seeing crazy unplanned madness happen... Like you're minding your own business killing someone, and a body flies from across the room and lands in front of you because you're boy used a grenade... I know, sounds stupid, but it's fun.
More hinting at RE2 WiiMake? Or something else maybe? Hmmm. Wii's Resident Evil fans will be 'very happy very soon,' Capcom says
I actually was looking forward to it based on the utter stupidity in the trailers. Fitty goes to not-Iraq to retrieve his stolen diamond-studded bling skull? We need more celebrity games like this, not like Facebreaker or whatever it was called. Maybe they'll make a sequel where The Game is the final boss.
lol The skull is actually real: It's worth $100 Mil http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/13/arts/design/13skul.html?ref=arts
