Kenny Stills of all people weighed in with the obvious - the biggest changes probably won't happen unless the diversity in ownership does.

As Galant stated, and I’ll amplify my own take on it, the Rooney Rule is a stupid rule…as written and in actual practice. The spirit of the Rooney Rule is what was lost almost as soon as it was instituted.

Art Rooney was a huge proponent of equal opportunity and felt too many good minority coaches were being overlooked for head coaching positions. While the intent of the rule, to basically make teams interview minorities for head coaching jobs…to promote racial equality amongst the head coaching ranks. But being forced to “check the block” makes the Rooney Rule in practice quite impractical and absurd.

So the spirit of “hey guys, you really oughta take a look at this guy”, it’s been replaced with “ok, who’s the minority coach we HAVE to interview so we’re not fined by the league?”

The NFL has evolved since the good old boy days of the NFL. There have been, and continue to be minority head coaches and candidates for head coaching positions based on, not the color of their skin but their demonstrated abilities.

In today’s league, would Caldwell, Bienemy and Flores be seriously considered for head coaching positions without the Rooney Rule? With the number of minority head coaches the league has had over the last 20+ years, I’d like to think so.

Richardson, the Panthers former owner. I didn't keep up with it, but it was alleged that he said a racial slur and handled some sexual harassment complaints poorly. It was nowhere near as damning as this initial information coming out...that was 2018.

Yeah, but why'd we hire Flores? You have to remember, Gase decided to leave on his own. Then we had multiple candidates decline taking the job for coach and GM. It's not a good look at all- hire a coach and ask him to lose, then punish him for having the audacity of winning. Then, ask him to visit your yacht to mingle with another team's QB, even though it clearly violates the rules.

Maybe race had absolutely zero to do with any of that. But wait until the idiots in the media piece it all together and put their spin on it. Ross is about to be trashed on a level that's never been seen in the NFL.

The fact that Urban Myer got hired before Bienemy makes me think, no to your question.

Shad Khan had made it known for quite some time he wanted Meyer. That’s no hit on Bienemy at all. I hope he does get his shot and does well but as what’s been stated before, if an owner wants a certain coach and he can get him, why must he be forced to interview someone he doesn’t want…regardless of his pigmentation?

Here where I truly disagree with you. If the Rooney Rule in practice was just a check the block procedure, then no team would have actually HIRED a black head coach. They would have all checked the block…yep we interviewed so-n-so…but we’re hiring “him”.

Right now I'm seeing trash thrown at the Giants and starting to see some for the Broncos (who apparently treated their interview with Flores in 2019 as a sham, with people showing up drunk, late, etc). No racial links to the Dolphins or any care about tampering, but some surprise and curiosity to see what - if anything - the NFL may do regarding the loss payment allegation.

And let's be real, Flores came from an organization that cheats regularly and a boss who used it to win Super Bowls. This idea that he's refusing to meet with Brady (it was Brady) because he's just an upstanding guy? C'mon.

And that is ****ed up that he wanted Meyer instead of Beleimey. There is zero doubt in my mind that if Meyer was darker that he wouldn't be considered due to his many scandals.

Systemic issues are more than 'being forced to fired someone without looking at his pigmentation." It is looking at the system on a whole and noticing that the darker the skin, the less leeway you have. IMO, Meyer is proof that is part of that, especially after he hired that guy who was fired for racism. Not a good look.

Rooney Rule is a bandage on an issue. More PoCs are getting opportunities, but everyone whoe pays attention knows that there are systemic racial issues in the NFL. It isn't as much as the fountain issue in the 60s, but it is there in more subtle ways.

There has been progress. Some want it faster

Here's kind of a quick rundown:
    https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...olphins-coach-alleges-racism-hiring-practices

Namely: The Giants didn't give him a fair shake and the interview was a sham. The Broncos didn't treat his interview (in 2019) seriously and showed up late and hungover. The Dolphins shut him out after he refused to tank or talk with Brady (who was not yet a FA), and eventually dismissed him.

Players do not care about draft picks while they're playing. You can talk about draft position all you want, but as soon as the players hit the only they care about winning and putting on the best performance they can.

If this is corroborated, it should be checkmate for Ross. I hope we are finally rid of this clown and have the team taken over by the next Joe Robbie. Somebody with a real passion for the team.

There's no way the owners will force out one of their own. The most they'll do is take away a couple first-round picks, which will hurt the team and the fans, but not Ross, and maybe fine him, which he'll barely notice.

I just don't think it's that bad. He wanted the 1st pick. Flores wouldn't do what he was told. He got fired. Principled people are fired all the time over their principled stand. Sucks but when you the owner you get to own. If I spent a billions on buying a franchise I sure as hell would want the employees doing what they're told. Especially if it meant loosing out on a "generational" QB. I want them to win every game but we knew that was going ot be a losing season. So winning 6 games got us what?

There's currently one black HC in an league where 70% of the players are black. Apparently the "best man for the job" is white 90+ percent of the time.

    True!
They need to get rid of the rule because its making fools of these coaches.
Just let owners hire who they want to hire.If I was an owner and the coach is ,orange, pink, blue whatever I would hire them if I feel they can win me games.
But you should never be forced to hire somebody because of the color of their skin.

This is super interesting in how it's a springboard. I wonder how many others will add their names/stories, and what it may do. That could quickly take this story to an incredible level. Things came close to breaking with the Snyder "investigation" and the Flores suit may just break the dam.

As Phin fans, we have our initial reactions, but that may be way to insular in thinking. This may not be specifically about Miami at all.

Tell that to the sports books and gamblers. tampering will be picks alone. This could be the hammer. You dont think leagues will go nuts about throwing games? Really?

I genuinely believe that because he wouldn't want to screw over Belichek, his mentor. Being in that meeting would hurt Flores a heck of a lot more than it would help.

The Rooney Rule isn't forcing anyone to be hired, it's forcing a group of old white dudes who say things like "the inmates running the prison" in regards to the players to actually consider black people in positions of authority.

It's also not getting them in trouble unless you just naturally think eliminating it would increase black representation among coaches? C'mon. Also, who YOU would hire is irrelevant until and unless you become an NFL owner.

It doesn't sound like Flores has any proof about the 100g for a loss but if he does Ross would have to sell the team.Unfortunately the next owner in line is just another NY business man who is possibly a patriots fan.
Not to mention we probally lose draft picks

Something I noticed in the text exchange, Flores called Belichick "coach" through out it until Belichick tells him he ****ed up and thought he was talking to Daboll, then it was "Thanks Bill".

That's pretty significant message Flores sent him, it's been over 40 years and when I see my past HS coaches, it's still always "coach" like it was in school because it's my way showing appreciation, even if they were crummy coaches. Showing respect.

Flores is doing an interview on CBS tomorrow morning?

That should be good. He's a terrible public speaker and has zero personality. I would love to see what a body language expert thinks of it.

He's going to be lying through his teeth.

Don't take the job then. He knew what was expected. I'd imagine that he indicated that he would do what was needed, that's why they hired him. So, my thing is, it's not like he stood on principle, when he only had the job because he was dishonest.

I'm not saying your wrong...like, I would agree with you if Flores had been the coach here for a couple years, and then just refused to tank. That would be standing on principle.

For the franchise, this is very damning and may cost Ross the team. But that's not what this is about, it's so much bigger than that for countless coaches and executives. This very well could change the NFL as we know it.

Also, notice that this is a class action- which means there's more than just Flores who will be stepping up and adding their name to the lawsuit. This will be the story of the off-season.

And for the folks that believe Flores is lying, you have to realize that he just sabotaged his entire career. He's done in the NFL and there's nothing for him to personally gain from this (besides money). He's doing this to better the league, even though he won't be a part of it.

Yeah, amongst other things. Ross wouldn't have hired Flores if Flores had been honest in the interview process, and told them that he was going to try to win at any cost. I mean, Flores knew that Gase was fired because he wanted to "win now.". To me, Gase, for all his faults, is the guy who really did stand on principle. If Gase had gone along with the tank, he would have gotten to draft his own QB, and would have probably gotten like a forever extension from dumb Ross.

I get what you're saying, and Flores certainly knew that he was coaching a garbage team. If Ross hired him on the premise that he was to lose every game, then Ross does not belong in the NFL. That's not a Flores fault, and it's incredibly insulting to the players, coaches, fans, etc.

For example, I know for a fact there's several on this site with season tickets- was it "right" for them to pay $200+ a game to see a rigged contest? Heck no! Was it right for me to pay $300 for the Sunday Ticket to watch them that year? Heck no! Ross screwed over a lot more than Brian Flores with that expectation...it goes against everything professional sports is supposed to stand for.

I'm sure teams have intentionally lost in the past. Heck, some probably intentionally lost last year. But putting it in writing with a bonus for losing is unheard of in professional sports. There's just no way that was disclosed in the interviews. If it was, then why bribe Flores at all?

I paid 300+ for Sunday ticket that year and once I saw Burrow in Sept against Texas I wanted the phins to lose every game to get him.I didn't give a **** about the money if it brings playoffs teams to follow.
I have paid for it since NFL ticket first started and guess what? I literally just cancelled directtv because this team will never change.****ed up the tank and passed on Herbert.

Bienemy has been interviewed and interviewed by a ton of teams, in a world without racism you’d think there was something else going on with Bienemy behind the scenes. And we know as dolphin fans good coordinators don’t always make good head coaches.

It’s possible racism played a part, but I can’t tell just by looking at the case without being a part of those meetings. Seems unlikely that everyone who interviewed Bienemy is racist.

The entire world knew we were tanking and there was liberal talk of an 0-16 or 1-15 season even without the payments. If you still shelled out money, that's on you.

Also, for season ticket holders, I imagine they could have consoled themselves sitting in their seats watching Burrow the way Cinci fans are.
