the linebackers were in dire need of an overhaul.
    they were awful last season
now if we can only upgrade an average Crowder we would be in business

Wow, that really sends a statement when you cut a vet this early.

Looks like they're feeling pretty good about Dobbins and Edds.

Expected this. No way they were going to carry 5 inside Linebackers.

Expected, but not this soon. Either way, good to see they're cleaning up the sloppy positions.

They did the guy a favor by cutting him now. Most OTAs wrap up in a few weeks and teams will access their needs. If someone needs him its best to find out now, not after camp in late August or early Sept.

His contract was 3 million[right?] this year...way too high for someone like him.

Maybe that will go towards Atogwe? :)

Im a bit surprised. Not that we cut a LB because we have a surplus now, but that it was him. Then again, I guess he hasn't really done much. Im sure he was a nice veteran presence in the locker room though for younger guys

I don't think he really had a role on this team when you look at Nolan's defense.

    Just my two cents though.

Another 'journeyman' LBer brought in to fill in the gap in depth. Shows the confidence they have in the other ILBers like Dansby, Crowder, Dobbins and Edds...

I think he would have gotten 3 million this year, I'm pretty sure. Smiley also would have gotten 3 million[around 15 mill for the remainder of his contract], so they shaved 6 million off of underperforming guys for 2010. Maybe they really will push for Atogwe. FS seems to be a hard position to come by.

After the failed Wilson signing though, I wonder if they'd be hesitant. Plus I think we have the highest payroll for 2010, it was 2nd in 2009 and with our two huge signings it will probably be tops in 2010. Even though there is no cap, they still have to manage it.

    Thank God...

I have ever been a Torbor fan. He was the last overpriced mistake left on this team. We have a better roster now and it's long past time to change.

    Next stop Channing Crowder................

I'm not sure why you would be surprised, honestly. He couldn't beat out Ayodele and I think most would agree Ayodele's performance last year was atrocious.
Dobbins was part of a trade and we drafted Edds. Torbor was the logical choice at ILB to be the first to go.

dobbins was well liked by chargers fans. Let's hope Nolan gets the best out of him.He could be one of those sleepers that just needs the right teacher.

Torbor's base salary was indeed 3.05 million this year. Thats waaaay too much to pay for your 5th ILB. And chances are with Dobbins and Edds, there wasnt even a roster spot for him. And he definately is behind Crowder and Dansby. Edds and Dansby are also both good coverage linebackers, so he wouldnt even be a starting linebacker in nickel packages.

We did him a favor by releasing him early. It gives him a chance to be picked up by another team and have almost the entire offseason to pick up their system.
