Rays abandon new stadium plan

Muckretired_adminOPThe Tampa Bay Rays announced this afternoon that they will abandon their ambitious plans to build a $450 million stadium on the downtown waterfront by 2012.
Rays President Matt Silverman said at a news conference the team will no longer seek a November referendum on the new ballpark the team proposed seven months ago for the site of Progress Energy Park, home of Al Lang Field.
"The public dialogue we've had has been very encouraging, but there's not been sufficient support for the timeline we put forth that would have resulted in a November referendum," Silverman said.
Instead, Silverman said the Rays will step back and let the community get involved in the team's quest for a new stadium. He and St. Petersburg business and political leaders announced they are forming a coalition of community leaders that, among other things, will consider possible alternative locations for a new ballpark.
There is no timetable for the new stadium.

Ray FinkleNew MemberToo bad is right, the new stadium they were going to build looked sweet as hell. They need a new stadium badly considering they play in a mental boob which is also one of the worst stadiums in baseball if not the worst (or the Metrodome).
