About 3 weeks ago, I was thinking about buying my own PS3 and decided to internet search "PS3 Price Drop" I found only one source that claimed the PS3 would drop its prices by $100.00 in April to May.

Now 3 weeks later, when you search "PS3 Price Drop" you will get a ton of hits. That tells me there is some truth behind the rumors... and i just wanted to give my brothers her at Thephins this knowledge so they could save $100.00 in a month or so.

    Some examples:

nice. I figured it'd be coming. Can't afford to be the most expensive console in this economy. that's just bad business.

It has to come eventually.... April-May time frame sounds about when they'd do something like that... I'm being speculative of course.

How much would Sony be losing off of a $299 console? I am guessing quite a bit but maybe increased sales would make up for it but with a $199 360 on the market and MS probably dropping their prices again in retaliation that may not even work. Got to hand it to MS for having the best marketing strategy of all the gaming consoles (the Wii I consider something grander than a gaming console--a family toy *note a joke*). :wink2:

Hence why I labeled it as a joke (ie *note a joke*) to hopefully avoid that discussion. Trust me I know the Wii is dominating this generation and I fully plan to offer my first born to the Nintendo gods one day (so Nintendo fanboys please don't flame me). :wink2:

Anyway back to the point the PS3 will have to lose quite a bit of money on this.

Woot! Maybe that will help drive down Blu Ray player prices as well. The 09 blu ray players already look to be starting at $250, which is less then you can buy the players they will be replacing currently.... At least for the Sony and Panasonic models.

This rumor was in this month's game informer if I remember correctly. It was also speculated that MS would follow suit and drop the 60GB Xbox 360 to $250. If they do I think I'm going to pick one up.

All kidding aside, $400 is the price Ps3 should have started at. Anything that literally cost more than the average pay check for a normal person is just asking not to sell. This knock down to 300 will sell some systems. (maybe even me)

I had read once that they were drawing even but that was faulty, however I did not know they were losing $50 per console. Now $150 would be almost like losing a whole Xbox 360 Arcade.

Maybe when they are expecting to turn profit is the april-may time frame... at which time they might be planning a price cut to forfeit said profit.

They should have? Not if they wouldn't sell enough to make up for the increased loss.

    Too late for what?
To be viewed as a successful system? No.
To "win" the console war? Yes.

i think they'd have to price it at $200 to try and catch the 360 at this point.

Well, that's not entirely true, i liked the psp one. But i couldnt finish either ps2 versions. I think I liked the psp one cause it was great and short. God of War is a beat'em up (a GREAT beat'em up, but still a beat'em up nonetheless) and the console versions just seemed to go on forever IMO. I liked them for a couple hours but just got bored after awhile.

I guess that's why i liked the psp version so much, cause by the time i was starting to get bored, it was over.

I understand the sarcasm but still losing what what would almost be an entire 360 console on every PS3 sold would be ridiculous. :shifty:

I disagree. They should have dropped the price to get more consoles into the consumers hands. They wouldn't be having to play catch up on software sales right now. You have to have the console sale numbers to have software developers make games for your system.

It is a known fact that the number one reason people have steered clear of the PS3 is the price. That would be including myself. Check the gaming forums. I am not downing the PS3 because I am a fanboy of another system, because I would like to own one. I am being a realist here. The price and timing killed the PS3.

I think the game library and online network are the reason xbox is ahead rather than price. If you're talking about teenagers and soccer moms you might have a point. As far as adults just buying one console or the other I don't think the price is a huge factor. The PS3 is actually not a bad value. People pay thousands for a television now but complain when a console that can do a lot costs a little more. PS3 needs to drop it's price but only so that teenagers and soccer moms will take another look. You can't make a general assumption about consumers as a whole. If price is the bottom line so much why do LCD HDtvs greatly outsell other types of HDtvs that are cheaper?

Hardcore gamers alone are not going to generate the sales for a console to survive in this environment. Yes that is your base but you need those soccer moms and teenagers to buy the system to generate the numbers so that games are made for it. The PS3 is lagging in sales due to price and software titles. Game makers are gonna overlook the lowest man on the totem pole in most cases. Sony is that man right now. Why? Because their system didn't sale as well as expected? What is your opinion for the PS3 not moving as many units as they have?

A late start and a console that is reportedly harder to make games for. This led to a poor selection of games [trust me I know, I bought one in May 07] and an online network that was way behind. Price is also a factor but I don't think it's the number one reason. It's a big reason the Wii has destroyed the PS3 and the Xbox 360 but putting just those two together, I don't think it's nearly as big a factor. As I said, 360s with hard drives are not so much cheaper that price alone is going to be a factor. I think most soccer moms and kids and whatnot are getting Wiis anyway. I'm just acknowledging that that group probably has moved a few Xbox 360 arcade consoles. But when it comes down to it I think the vast majority of people who have made the choice to purchase a PS3 or Xbox are 18-35 males. That is why I don't think price was as big a factor. Like I said, I have a few hundred or so to blow so I pick a console, is 100 dollars difference going to be a dealbreaker if I think the expensive one is worth it? Probably not. But if I want to play Gears of War with my buddies on Xbox live anyway then it's a no brainer. But the price wasn't the primary reason. If Gears of war [or Halo or whatever] had been on the more expensive system I probably would have picked that one. I think price has been a convenient scapegoat for the PS3 lagging behind for a long time. A price cut certainly won't hurt but I think if the PS3 would have launched with the 360 within 100 dollars of the 360s price it would be winning. Brand name is a powerful thing and Playstation had it going for them until they let 360 get a headstart and make a name for itself.

in the end it really isn't about price, i agree with that. its about games. I bought the wii for super mario galaxy, mario kart, and smash brothers. I bought the 360 for mass effect, gears of war, fable II, and halo.

I've considered buying the ps3, but as i said earlier, only game that appeals to me is littlebigplanet. You know what my biggest factor for whether or not I get a ps3 this summer is? Whether or Not Final Fantasy XIII Versus is exclusive. It really isn't about the price, it's about what im gonna play on it when/If i buy it.

Edit - But we've seen a lot of former exclusive Sony titles jump ship in the last 2 years.

I would think high prices for a console would harm it especially the way the economy has been the last year or so.

I agree a game library is big but dropping $400 to $600 for a PS3 is a lot for a lot of people. That's why the PS3 was so good it was cheap and had games, but the Gamecube was cheap with no games and couldn't sell. So I think its a mixture between the two with too high of a price being the number one problem.

I just don't think the price was the number one problem. You can't blame it on the economy. People hurting financially aren't buying Xbox 360s either. Is dropping 300 bucks on a console better than 400? Not really. It was all about the game library. It still is to an extent though the PS3 library is MUCH better now. The problem now is the 360 has already built a big head of steam. I know plenty of people who have ponied up hundreds for Xbox, one guy bought it twice b/c his first went out and wasn't covered by warranty. Not a single person has ever said they chose it because it was cheaper. Not one.
