You can change your pick throughout the year, This is meant to be fun I know its early but who cares who do you got number 1 in the 2009 draft? Who is your top prospect overall. For me ATM going with Michael Oher OT Ole Miss, can't go wrong with the best LT prospect. Sorry for not being very clear.
Id like to say DE Micheal Johnson but he needs to produce this year to prove it. I like the Oher pick, and Crabtree, but Im going to go with RB Chris Wells after he declares. If we are playing just seniors Ill take DE Micheal Johnson. I do think though it will be an underclassmen.
Well Wells had said he plans on staying for his senior year, but that could very well change if he does win the Heisman. In the interview on SI he said he rather beat Michigan than win a National title, a true Buckeye right there.
I think we could be primed to take a WR if Ginn doesnt step up which I believe he will. #1 pick Oher Miamis pick Malcolm Jenkins/Vonte Davis #1 prospect I'll say Crabtree. I would love a CornerBack, I think the front 7 for Miami is going to be awesome. Edit-is Andre Smith a better prospect than Michael Oher?
REY MALUAGA without question for me, this man is downright the scariest player i have ever seen coming out of college....Think Sean taylor on steroids
Early going, prospect wise, Crabtree. Who do I think is going first overall? ATM id say Oher, LT is gonna be a hot pick with the success of Thomas, and early impressions of Long. THough if its KC picking as I think they will maybe not ... Crabtree would be good for them, or Johnson/Malauga perhaps.
Crabtree is probably the best prospect, just like Calvin Johnson was, but not a #1 pick. It honestly depends on which team gets the slot, because it can go one of three ways. Kansas City: Matt Stafford Atlanta: Michael Johnson San Francisco: Michael Oher St. Louis: Michael Crabtree And would someone explain the Michael Oher hype to me? I don't see it.
Why would ATL get Johnson? They have two pass rushers already. Abraham gets injured but I don't see them giving up on him.
Same reason Jacksonville had a strong defense yet drafted two pass rushers. Mike Smith is a defensive guy, and there's no reason not to add to that DL, Jamaal Anderson or no. St. Louis is a mess despite investing plenty of draft picks on the defense. Time to put one or two into the offense. Torry Holt isn't getting younger.
There are so many top tier players in this year's draft. Tier 1 Prospects 1) George Selvie-DE/OLB-South Florida 2) Michael Crabtree-WR-Texas Tech 3) Michael Johnson-DE/OLB-Georgia Tech 4) Rey Maualuga-LB-USC 5) Michael Oher-OT-Ole Miss 6)Malcolm Jenkins-CB-Ohio State 7) James Laurinaitis-LB-Ohio State 8) Andre Smith-OT-Alabama 9) Chris Wells-RB-Ohio State 10) Matthew Stafford-QB-Georgia Tier 2 Prospects 1) Vontae Davis-CB-Illinois 2) Jeremy Maclin-WR-Missouri 3) Duke Robinson-OG-Oklahoma 4) Ciron Black-OT-LSU 5) William Moore-S-Missouri 6) Darrius Heyward Bay-WR-Maryland 7) Taylor Mays-S-USC 8) Eugene Monroe-OT-Virginia 9) Fila Moala-DT-USC 10) Tyson Jackson-DE-LSU
There's no way that Oher is going to be the first pick. None. Beanie Wells and Matt Stafford as we stand today, have much greater chances. Crabtree is another.
Wasn't the same said in regards to Jake Long last year? Alot of people had Matt Ryan and Darren McFadden rated higher. If Long goes on to have a stellar rookie season I wouldn't be surprised to see another team grab an Oher #1... unless of course that team is the Dolphins.
Teams will not take the risk on Oher at #1 because of the mental aspect of his life, quite apart from the fact that he's never played the way someone with his physical skill set should play. As for Jake Long, I don't think he was anywhere other than close to or at the top.
I'm sticking with Jenkins, I think he is going to be a phenom. Or even Vontae Davis, he could be a premiere cover back for yrs....
ILB Rey Maualuga seems the best player although he gets out of position alot but OT Michael Oher plays a more important position so I think Oher is the favorite. RB Knowshon Moreno is my darkhorse if he declares and if the team picking first needs a RB. (scratch that, just realized he's a sophmore) Between Maualuga and Oher right now but its a long season
He's the one I want us to get but I dont think he'll go number 1. He would be perfect for our defense though
I like Maualuga a lot but I wonder how he is when he faces an offensive linemen. I've seen a few videos on him and a lot of his plays come when the defensive line is leaving gaps for him to run through. Maybe you can elaborate on him against linemen? He still makes plays in coverage and is wreckless as hell. I like Michael Johnson a lot though. I think he's going to be something special. He's so athletic and quick for his size. An absolute freak of nature lol. I wish we could draft him and move Merling to LB. Johnson seems too big to be moved to LB even though I've seen him in coverage before at GT. For me, its Selvie, Johnson, Maualuga and Jenkins in no specific order. Jenkins impresses me. He can do everything well and is one of the better corners I've seen in the last few years. Selvie dominates. I saw him against Kansas last night and they were double teaming him but he still applied pressure. Really quick guy. Btw, how come everyone keeps mentioning Michael Crabtree in this years draft. I know he's a hell of a player but isn't he only a sophomore?
Agree on Jenkins and Johnson. Selvie's quickness off the edge is just awesome. As for Maualuga's shedding blockers skills, I actually think he's one of the better ones at it although he tends to play with such abandon that he usually just shoots gaps (sometimes the wrong ones). His shedding from what I remember (havent seen him this year yet) is successful because he hits the blocker before the blocker can get set and sheds him before the blocker can grab hold. He isnt really the read and react type that will let the play come to him. He's more the read and take off type that will just fly to the spot where he thinks the ball is going
Certainly has a shot Con. But I was interested listening to the telecast last night that said he had been on a special diet to pile on the weight and was STILL only 245lbs. He looks bigger, especially in those monstrous thighs, but if he's dieting JUST to get to 245, then he's really only going to be an option for 3-4 teams at OLB and that's when you have to look at a couple of things; his play against the run and his ability as a cover linebacker; and also his ability to mix things up with his rush off the edge. He is lightning quick, but he doesn't have a vast array of moves, relying on speed more often than guile or than mixing things up. He's so fun to watch though. In the 255lb area, you have to think he's an absolutely prime target if we're drafting top 6.
Crabtree is a Rsoph. The thing about Johnson is consistency. Remember, he's been used more as a situational pass rusher for Ga. Tech the past couple of seasons, rather than an every down guy. Can he make that transition to OLB? Oher WILL NOT go first overall. No team is going to invest $60 million and $30 million guaranteed in a guy for whom the first 12 years of his life didn't exist mentally. And as I said, he's not nearly consistent enough. In fact, he's graded out in R2 by both National and BLESTO going into this season. Maualuga is a good player, but he has a tendency to overrun plays. James Laurinitis is another not getting any love. Selvie has to get a mention, as does Matt Stafford. Chris Wells' injury may prevent him from attaining the heights. Roman mentioned Andre Smith; that's a pretty good shout. I'm not sure about Malcolm Jenkins and which position he's most suited for. I certainly don't see any scenario where he goes first.
Thanks. Just to clarify, my post wasn't about the number one overall pick or draft prospect. I was just naming some guys that I really like. Johnson has to be a every down player. I want to see him how he plays in that role. Him at LB is awkward. I think he's too tall to play OLB. 6'7 is awfully tall. However, I think he has the atleticism to play outside. Every time I watch Maualuga play, there are large gaps that he just runs through and makes a play behind the LOS. I've never seen him shed blockers so I question that part of his game. Adam says he is pretty good at it. Your thoughts on it?
Oh I know you weren't mate. I was just making a thread wide comment. I think Johnson is probably in the 6-5 area when all's said and done. But he too needs a lot of work if he's going to be a Dolphin. Maualaga sheds pretty well. But he needs to grow into the position. He overpursues, he's too aggressive and at times he relies on athletic ability and not instinct. He also has had some off field issues which would concern me and I don't think he's ever seen a camera he didn't like.
With Maualuga, wouldn't playing a 3-4 limit the amount of ground he has to cover somewhat; as opposed to the 4-3 style USC plays, thus forcing him to have a more specific read/key & react style than the sideline-to-sideline style he's got now? Did a piece on College Gameday, the only issues they brought up were from his freshman year as a result of losing his father to cancer, are there others?
No other issues outside of what you mentioned and from watching the game tonight it looks like USC plays a 4-3/3-4 hybrid.
