As many of you may or may not know, my house is in foreclosure and is being sold at a Sheriff's sale on January 6th, 2009. Shortly before it went into foreclosure my husband and I had to file bankruptcy and received the discharge. We're told that we will need to be out of the home, probably the end of January. We had a dear friend who was going to let us live in a home that he owns and is unoccupied, rent free, until we got back on our feet, since neither of us are working. He came over last night to tell hubby that that house has since gone into foreclosure and, basically, we now have nowhere to live come 2/1/09. We have two young daughters and desperately need your prayers that some "miracle" will come along and save us. We were on unemployment till that ran out and then public assistance which has also run out. Please say a quick prayer for my family.

I know times are tough for everyone and please know this is in no way a solicitation for financial assistance, but instead a request for spiritial assistance and/or guidance.

    Thanks everyone.

    Mary

Aw Hell Mary, you got my thoughts and prayers. Too many people are going through this sort of situation right now and it's getting out of hand. You seem like a great person and have always been kind to me, I'm sure you and your family will find, not necessarily a miracle, as you say, but a workable solution to your current situation.

 Thanks Opie. I try to be kind to everyone here and it really hit home when my husband asked me to look around this morning for shelters and soup kitchens. It's hit him pretty hard - he's on antidepressants - and he blames the current administration for the situation. I've been told that a shelter is NOT an ideal place - that, basically, you get robbed blind. I hope a solution comes up, but I'm not very "opfinistic."

What type of work do the two of you do? I know the job market is bad right now, but it might be time to pick up and move to an area where more jobs are available, an up-and-coming city? I've been a working joe all my life and have done everything from construction to restaurant work to sales. For fast money, cash money, restaurant work is good. Waiter, barback, busboy, whatever...it's not glamorous, but it's fast money and you bring home cash every day. Not only that, but oft times you can get a meal out the kitchen for free or cheap, saving you even more dough. Trust me I spent 16+ years in that biz.

restaurant work is very faced pasted and there's a lot going on regardless of what you're doing so if you have trouble working very quickly keep that in mind. especially bar work or serving or cooking.. or dishes.

He's a Network Administrator - brilliant with computers, servers, etc. I send resumes out for him every day and he pounds the pavement when he can. I am an Executive Assistant, having last worked at Seton Hall University up here in South Orange, New Jersey but, since I had my heart attack, I haven't been cleared to work yet by my doc. With the stress of that type of job and what's going on right now, I doubt he'll clear me to go back to work until things look up. And he's definitely not looking for anything glamorous, just something to make a buck to take care of his family. I'll let him know what you said about the restaurant industry.

    Thanks.

Any time Mary, it's a different world from what he does, but sometimes it's refreshing to change things up a bit. I originally went in for a part time busboy job when I was 20, and eventually ended up as an F & B director for a Marriott and as a restaurant owner at some point. Now I sell equipment and design kitchens for the people I used to work for/with. Atlantic City should have tons of opportunities in that field (I don't know much about your location in regards to AC so forgive my geographical ignorance if it's an impossible distance) with all the casinos and whatnot.

And, I might add, on a side note. I've been on the phone with almost every town in New Jersey's Public Assistance/Section 8/Low Income hotline all morning. Their response? Our waiting list is closed and will not re-open for at least 5 years. What is up with that? I'm not too proud to say I need help. The lady I spoke to in Montclair this morning said they had 249 vouchers and over 7,000 applications for them. Something's gotta give.

Thanks. It really is a different world. I don't know how he'll feel about taking a train - or even if it goes to AC - but it's over 2 hours from where we live and our poor '96 Altima with 120,000 miles on it probably won't make it there every day. At least gas prices are on the decline. Plus the girls have to be picked up from school so, it's quite the dilemma.

Best of luck to you and your family, terrible stuff to hear that this kind of thing can happen in this country.

Dont forget that with Christmas coming up there should be some opportunity for seasonal employment in the retail world. If not for you (it can be high stress) then for your husband. Its often crappy work (registers, stocking etc) but it would at least bring in a little bit of income. OFC otherwise just keep sending out resumes and looking around.

Also, check into retail management. Many stores hire basic assistant managers for jobs that can pay around 30k a year with no prior training or experience or even many times a degree. Again, often crappy work and bad hours, but it might be worth looking at.

    Good luck and god bless!

    Update: Prayers May be Working

Here's an update as of this morning. I'll continue to keep you guys updated.

I was put in contact this morning through one of my contacts at Freecycle.org with a "Madge" of St. Rose of Lima RC Church. She said Madge could help us. Called Madge - she says the Archdiocese of Newark has their own "shelter" of 140 private apartments that you can live in for up to a year, until you get back on your feet. One catch though - you have to have an income. I told her our situation and after all the "oh dear's" said she was going to speak with someone and call me back. I'll keep you guys updated as I receive information. I sent an email off to my congressman and the Mayor of Newark to see if they could provide any help/resources. I'm not sitting on this - can't afford to - I'm being very proactive.

Guys and gals keep your fingers and toes crossed please. I just got a call from someone at this place. We couldn't hear each other so she's going to call me back after the meeting she had to go into. It's called New Community Center / Harmony House. They don't call it a shelter - they call it "transitional housing." She's going to call me back and I'm very hopeful. Again, I'll continue to post updates here.

    Thanks again all.
