Though pitbulls and mastiffs are definitely gentle dogs, you must also realize that its not all nurture, as these dogs are naturally aggressive. Pitbulls have been used for dogfighting for some time due to their aggression and Mastiffs (in groups) were used to hunt bear. An aggressive pit bull or an aggressive mastiff are not always a product of pure training and torture. I said that not to defend Vick, but it seems that everyone is giving the logical equation of....aggressive dog = torture and poor treatment. This aggression is why many people have a negative view of the breeds. Just like the Jack Russel. You don't have to train it to be complete hyperactive and nuts, they are naturally like that. Its in their temperment.
Agreed. But alot of it has to do with how they are raised and the environment. Some dogs need more discipline and some need less, etc.
