While I understand what you are saying, the trade for Boston really wasn't the mistake but rather the assumption that the trade solved our wr problem was the mistake. The 6th round pick was inconsequential and didn't preclude us from drafting a wr, which is what a smart front office would have done. Can you imagine what could have been had Boston stayed healthy and we drafted Boldin?
Well, the trade, not the pick itself, was a move that set us back yet again, you cannot bring in a Vet such as him then spend high picks on the same position, as the young player in theory will not see the field very often. And as usual for us, there have been plenty of opportunities that the Organization just never capitalized upon as imo the decision makers lack both balls and vision and have for years, as if the Evil Empire in Foxboro does not exist, if we do not take chances we shall never catch them.
That'll leave a mark...ouch. People also tend to overlook that the bisons have knocked us out of the playoffs the last two yrs.
Thurman Thomas catching screen passes and just killing us, we were helpless to stop it and to this day it makes me ill to think about it. That was one of the reasons why JJ's arrival made my day, he added speed to the defense and that was the end of that play murdering our playoff hopes.
Yeah and don't forget when they spelled Thurman they brought in Kenneth Davis......... We couldn't stop him either.
Or if we really needed a LB, he passed on Lance Briggs for Eddie Moore. Defense is supposed to be Wanny's specialty and he couldn't even identify the better LB.
Here is scene of Ken meeting DJ and his date in a bar.
One move that really ground my gears at the time and whenever I think about it since, was JJ trading his last of three 2nd round picks for 3 lower round picks that all amounted to nothing, rather than drafting Olin Kreutz. 1998. I recall he was targeting Jeremy Newberry with that final 2nd rounder and when SF took him right ahead of us a couple of spots, rather than settle for a nice consolation prize in Kreutz, he trades down.
Ugh, Draft Days with Wanny were Horror Films, who can forget the Wanny trade of a 4th rd pick (Mewelde Moore) to move up one spot to draft Vern Carey? Wanny was the kind of dude you could bluff off of a set of Kings with nothing in your hand..pre flop... Oh Yeah, there is one phrase, 6 words, that should send every Dolphins Fan shrieking in consternation off into the evening: "What can (insert name) do that (insert name) cannot do"?
That he ever got another NFL job is clearly indicative of the nepotism and good ol' boys network that is rampant in the NFL coaching fraternity. IMO...
Even that has it's limits Mr C, if Wanny's record in Miami was looked at objectively, he was quite successful: 42-31 The fact no other NFL team called him up at Pitt to be a HC in the NFL speaks volumes about what the Good Ol' Boys think of his HC ability, now truth be told Wanny in Buffalo has me a touch apprehensive as he was always a good DC. But Draft Weekends..eegads, like watching chainsaws juggled, you just knew things were going to turn out bad..
