Back in the 90's, fans got a vote for who they wanted to watch every week. Growing up in Connecticut, I got to watch the Dolphins all the time. I think a lot of it had to do with excitement and rarity of Miami's offense. Marino's pure passing ability w/explosive arm strength and lightning release, both smooth and sleek, was fun to watch. Marino was was going to have to throw all day if Miami had any chance to win. Made for some memorable and thrilling games. And the fact that Marino played in an era that valued defense and running the ball vs. wide open passing concepts, certainly made Miami more unique.

As for the thread topic, I don't really care where Miami ranks. As long as our fan base is big enough to support the team and fill the stadium every week, I'm good. That's going to happen when Miami can consistently field a winner and fix the stadium. The stadium should be much improved and our roster is looking good. We're going in a positive direction.

All of these "studies" are flawed, go to the NBA forum and you will see Heat fan trying to skew stats then call themselves one of the best fans in sports.

    Great big yaaaaawn.

I'll say one thing for sure... the Marlins and the Heat impact our youth and community more than the Dolphins do in terms of off the field/court activities. There really is no comparison, Heat players/front office and Marlins players and front office make this look effortless.

When you have that kind of impact on the community, new fans are created and they show up to games.

I would also take into consideration the locality of these teams. Green Bay has a tremendous fan base, you know why? Well besides the fact they seem to have a constantly good football team, but what the hell else is there to do honestly? Ok Hunting, Fishing great but sports related Packers are all they got..

In Florida you have so many choices. We got excellent College teams, choice of 3 Professional Football Teams, Hockey, Baseball, and Basketball. BTW all these other Florida sports teams have won championships at least once since the Dolphins were relevant.

It can be looked at both ways. Having grown up in an area where football, particularly the NFL, is king, the attitude is often "Why would you want to do anything else?", and fans who don't care as much are seen as less dedicated. Everything else takes a backseat to watching football on the weekend for many. And for people like me who move away from the area, living somewhere where thats not the case can then be perplexing.

    Hey check this out:

In grammar, Dolphins fans are 3rd worst (Redskins fans take #1 spot). We can work on this.. maybe get to #1?

(WSJ looked at 150 reader comments on each team's website and ran it through an automated grammar checker: Grammarly)

That would lead me to believe that we have a lot of people who care a lot, and that is, by definition, what a fan is. And as I said before, caring a lot, especially when the team hasn't been good in a long time, is the true showing of who the real fans are.

I've often wondered if the slow decline of the Dolphins from the dominant Super Bowl winners of the 70s down to the prolific 80s offenses that never quite won a title down to the decent teams of the 90s that managed to make the Play-offs down to the average teams of the 00s that didn't down to the below-average teams of recent years that have been a mainstay in the top-10 of the NFL draft hasn't been matched by a slow evolution in the fan-base away from pure passion, enthusiasm, energy and excitement and towards a more reserved and analytical kind of fan-base that populates forums like these.

Over the course of the last 45 years, Miami has trended downward from the greatness of the 70s to the embarrassment of the 00s. I've got to believe that Miami fans are uniquely jaded and cynical in comparison to fans of teams like the Packers and Steelers who have had multiple peaks during roughly the same period, who have never had to go more than about a decade without something really good happening to their team--a great new HC or historically great QB shows up.

Very few teams have continued downward over such a long period. That has to mean something in terms of how the fans see things.

If we were talking about a person, we'd all expect that person to be beat down and depressed after 45 years of life continually getting worse. I don't see why we shouldn't expect a little of that reflected in the general fan-base.

That's a really great point, Greg. An interesting way of looking at it.

For me, I think part of it is that they were sucessful for so long, that I can't help but think of that as being the norm, even as we wade through year after year of below average teams to get back to that point. I consider 1990 to be when I became a diehard fan, when I was 13 years old. From that point, they had 14 consecutive years without a losing season, made the playoffs nine of those years, and when they didn't make them (91, 93, 96, 02, 03), it was almost always a case of choking away the season at the end, not sucking from the start. When you grow through your teen and early 20s years as a fan with that always being the case, I think it has an effect on you.

Then, 2004 happened, and the team fell off the cliff, of course, and have never crawled back out. But to me, they have gotten back to generally being close enough to break our hearts at the end of the season, and keep the flame of hope alive enough to think it could happen again every year.

The secondary market is a pretty good indicator of fan intensity.

The Dolphins have..FOR YEARS now, had NO secondary ticket sale market.

ONLY the annual Patriots game gets a consistent markup, and that's because some pink pasty Bahstun douche buys the tickets.

The Fins regularly have 6 out of 8 games every year, have zero interest in the secondary market, and now the ratings have begun to suffer as well.

The Fins are a religion to me, but fans like me and us are becoming scarce in this city. Gotta start winning soon.

The fact the Dolphin games are among the lowest rated on televisionof all NFL cities with an NFL franchise says a lot about the total lack of interest in the teams in the South Florida area.
Because you can't use the stadium issues as an excuse as to why fans in South Florida don't tune in to watch the game on their own television.
Until they once again become a consistent winner, many casual fans will continue to find other ways to occupy their time on game days.

There's a huge and important difference in "Dolphin fans" and "fans in the Miami area". That's my problem with the whole thing.

Really it is pretty simple...over this long period of mediocracy it has simply been lousy coaching and sorry GM's. Starting last year with Hickey and continuing this year with him and Tannenbaum we are finally in an upward trend bringing in much talent...Coaching? We will have to see but we are finally getting talent on the team..a lot of talent..keep trending up FINS..We like it.
