http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/sports/football/miami-dolphins-joe-philbin-didnt-call-plays-in-gre/nPs4Y/ I like this. It gives more in depth viewpoint on Philbin and what a typical week would look like.
People who worry about if Philbin called the plays or not, shouldn't be allowed to voice an opinion. HC's don't generally call plays. They oversee the gameplan, keep all the cylinders firing. Turns out, Philbin won a SB doing exactly that.
Great read, I really feel like this is going to be our guy for a long time. The more and more I read about him and listen to him speak, the more I think we made the right decision. Coming from such a good organization and the lack of offense this team has showed over the years, I feel like we are finally adapting to the new NFL and putting our foot in the right direction to eventually start competing in the AFC.
His attention to detail is uncanny plus I loved the fact he prepared both offense and defense for gameday. He has a sense for knowing not only what play to call but why to call it. I think the Dolphins is going to surprise everyone with how improved everyone will be. He won't take any half-hearted crap from anyone or from himself. Like the McDonald's commercials say: I'm loving it!!
I would much rather have a guy that excelled at X's and O's and showed an ability to make in-game adjustments than the Powerpoint guy. I want Philbin to succeed for issues that go beyond the Miami Dolphins. I really do. But damn if we don't look back at this one in 3-4 years and wonder what the heck we were thinking.
we got an x and o guy, the way he has talked about computers the other day i dont think he is doing these things on power point himself anyways
I think a guy who can command a room has a chance at being a good head coach. However, I do hear what you're saying, and I agree... at least up to a point. I was very skeptical of Philbin when the Phins hired him. Like you, I want to root for him. Just going on personality, he's winning me over. However, I am still skeptical about his chances as a successful head coach. Just because I like the guy doesn't mean he's going to win.
The rah rah tone of the article is undermined by the actual quotes in it.I hope Joe is the next coming, naturally as a dolfan, and I will wait to see him materialize, because these articles, especially this one, won't convince me.
Not saying this because of this article, but he seems like a man who makes other men want to carry themselves and act a certain way, like you kinda wanna do your best in front of him, just trying to put myself in their shoes as much as I can, he seems like a guy that you want to earn his respect.. What's your gut tell you Meister?
There is good reason to be concerned when someone worried about typos in a Powerpoint slide when his audience are players who read at a 3rd grade level. It's a little bit of overkill. Yes, I'm looking at you Florida State.
Whatever adjustments were made would have already been run through and planned for by the OC, no? He didn't call plays but it would be weird if McCarthy wouldn't have talked to him during the game about adjustments.
Just because he didn't call plays doesn't mean he wasn't an X's and O's guy. Did you read that article? Because, in my mind, it leaves little doubt about his X's and O's ability.
Yes, I did read the article. It was utterly unenlightening. Lots of 'could've' statements. There is a very good chance we just hired a quality control/trainer type to be head coach. Because Green Bay is awesome.
There are legitimate reasons to be wary of Joe Philbin as a head coach. Dismissing him as the "Powerpoint guy" is not one of them. Because the previous head coach focused on the wrong details, at least in public, it must mean that the new head coach will too!
I understand your skepticism considering the last few coaching moves we've made, but an example from a Powerpoint representation to me holds very little validity. Just by reading quotes and such from his former colleagues it seems like he played a huge role in the recent transformation to success in Green Bay. And I am just hoping it can translate to W's here. That example just kinda shows me his attention to detail and lack of acceptance of letting something minor slide through the cracks which can transcend down the line to his staff and/or players when it comes to player technique etc.
I think I would prefer a head coach not call plays, personally. There's too many guys who get hired based on the good performance of an offensive or defensive unit on a good team, and go on to basically become what you could call "executive coordinators". Guys who get hired as head coaches, and basically just add head coaching stuff to their coordinator jobs and then find an established guy for the opposite side of the ball they'll give autonomy to. I like that Philbin has a strong management background and will be more of a big picture type guy. That can also be a negative I suppose, but it's I think probably a better and more successful path than what's normally done.
