It’s no secret that the Cincinnati Bengals are in the market for a quarterback, no matter how many times owner Mike Brown says he hopes Carson Palmer will return.

Their search for a successor to Palmer includes, on Friday, a private workout with former Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The workout will take place in Ponder’s hometown of Dallas.

Ponder previously has worked out in Tallahassee for the Vikings, Broncos, Eagles, Dolphins, Titans, and Patriots. He has visited the Bills, Bengals, Titans, and (today) the Redskins.

Ponder falls in the second cut of quarterbacks, a five-man group consisting of Jake Locker, Colin Kaepernick, Ryan Mallett, and Andy Dalton. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess when and where they’ll land.

As to the top of the class, Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert, it’s hard to imagine either guy being available after the fifth pick.

They’re probably looking at him with their 2nd round pick. They’ve locked on to taking a WR at #4 overall. Probably AJ Green.

    Wouldn't be so sure it's a WR.

According to Lombardi, the Bengals predefine which position they’ll take at which draft pick, and then select who they perceive to be the best player at that position. This year, they’ve got WR locked in to #4. So either AJ Green or Julio Jones will be going fourth overall.

That's true, the Bengals do do that for the draft. I still think Nick Fairley is very much in play at that spot for them.

All bets could be off if Newton is there at 4.

    While true, he won't.
