Another Ireland gem. Who needs Karlos Dansby or Kevin Burnett when we have Ellerbe and Wheeler? Of course the younger player is always better. :sigh:

The guy has been horse **** all year. He's made a couple of plays but I'd gladly give those up if the guy could diagnose one ****ing run play correctly. He's honestly, a total moron.

I doubt Dansby would be doing any better here for various reasons.

It's really not that hard to find a ILB and a WLB in the draft. I don't see why spending inordinate amounts of money on LBs in this day and age is of any benefit.

Fat or not he was better then Ellerbe. And Wheeler. And he had a higher upside, played hurt (tricep) and made more big plays. So all in all we took a cap hit to release the better player and we're still paying Dansby as well as the worse player of the two in Ellerbe.

I just mean the way we play our LB's in this scheme, I have a hard time seeing anyone minus elite players really having success. We set them up to fail IMO

    Among other things.

We definitely misuse them but we also misevaluate them. We misuse them in that Coyles scheme is a double a gap blitz scheme. We've blitzed the a gap less then 30% of the time so yes the things Ellerbe does well he's not being asked to do. But is he better at that then Dansby? No. Dansbys been a guy who gets pressure through his career when asked to pass rush. He's not Cam Wake or anything close to that but he's a much better overall player then Ellerbe. I had a problem when it was done. Seeing the results I have a bigger problem with the scheme and the personnel.

Which translates into, "It will take the Miami Dolphins 10 years to find a ILB/WLB." We said the same thing about, "Oh...you can find a guard in the later rounds of the draft." Yet....here we are.

If anybody had told me Ellerbe had Ray Lewis to watch and learn from then i'd say Ellerbe has a short term memory.

Because I think they all get extended and given a handsome boost in salary.

to anyone who thinks LBs don't matter ... look at Kuechle and Carolina ....

put that kid in the middle of this defense and it would be top 3 immediately ... and isn't easy to find -- about as hard to find as a 'franchise QB' ....

i'll give Ellerbe another year, but Wheeler has been a waste .....

I don't think enough can be said about losing a leader as well. This off season, we lost 3 leaders(Long, Bush and Dansby). Factor that in with having 11 new starters(50% of our team), one of the youngest teams in the NFL, a 2nd year QB and that explains a lot.

that's the problem i think with ellerbe. wheeler i'm not a fan of but with ellerbe it just seems he cant play in our scheme. i think we have to decide if we give him another year or trade him to a traditional 3-4 defense where he will play well again

I think you draft a linebacker that can beat him out and let him play out his contract. I don't know how the cap/money works in the NFL. I'm fairly understandable of how the NBA situation works but not on the NFL. Basically if we are forced to keep him because we have to pay him then we should draft a mainstay at that position. Let it be an open competition in camp with the idea that the rookie we drafted will eventually be the guy. If Ellerbe wins the job then it's a one year audition for another team. He's been a failure at the position and not the player we need at that spot.
I'd think long and hard about drafting a MLB with our first or second round pick this year. I know we need offensive line help but linebacker at this point is a priority as well. Look at what Luke Kuechly has done for Carolina on the defensive side? We need a linebacker like that on this defense. We haven't had that since Zach Thomas left.

We run a similar hybrid a gap blitz scheme as the Ravens ran last year. They actually blitzed Ellerbe through the A gap but the biggest difference is we dont have Ray Lewis. We dont have anyone with that type of skill passion or leadership. Like him or not, and I get why some dont, that dude was a GREAT player and an even better leader. Id be ok with Ellerbe in a true 3-4 next to a really good player but hes not someone you center a defense around which, Im afraid, is what Ireland, Coyle, and Philbin have done.

Wheeler should be relegated to backup or pass coverage roles only.

Burnett turns 31 tomorrow, Dansby is already 32.

You can be sarcastic and pot shot the GM all you want but the reality is if you're building a team around Tannehill (which we should be) then you want guys who will be peaking in the next 2-4 years, not guys who peaked 2-4 years ago.

Do you not understand how old and obnoxious the anti-Fireland stuff is. People don't like him, duh, everyone knows that. It doesn't have to be the focal point of every single thread.

Dude made a thread about Ellerbe and his play. Can we talk about Ellerbe and his play? No because the Firelanders are on patrol.

Now I understand that some people know very little about the game and have nothing of substance to say about topics like LB play, zone drops, gap fills, shades, spills, pursuit angles, play recognition, etc. but I think the forum would be a lot better off if those people took a break from the ranting and actually tried to learn something.

    1. Which are you? Fireland, or anti-Fireland?
    2. No one is stopping you from talking about those things.
    3. I do not recall your ever talking about those things. So, are you including yourself in the "nothing of substance to say" category? Perhaps you have discussed those things and I just missed it.

Perhaps this forum's overall level of knowledge is just beneath you. There is always that possibility...

Lol clearly it's the Firelanders who think the forum is beneath them. I can't think of another reason why they'd blather on and on endlessly about the same thing as if the rest of us were too slow to understand them the first 100 times.

I will pot shot our garbage GM. I dont want guys who will be peaking with Tannehill instead of guys who are good. Your boy got rid of good, slightly older players for just as expensive worse players who happen to be a few years younger. I want both but if given the choice give me good players. You just come up with every excuse for Jeff Ireland.

And Im sure they wonder why you blather on defending him when hes not worth defending (IMO of course). I dont know why youre afraid to criticize the guy for anything when myself and others arent always afraid to give credit when its due. Its probably not going to change, nor should it, because only a few seem content with mediocrity.

The hilarious thing is that the Ireland supporters will try and tell you that he spent all this money this offseason for 2-3 years down the road.

The fact of the matter is, you don't overspend in free agency for 2-3 years down the road. You overspend in free agency because you are trying to save your job.

Ireland's moves are a clear case of mis-evaluation and shows that he does not have the vision to fit the player to the scheme.

    2. Probably not. Only if in a thread I am perusing.
    3. Sounds like you are anti-Fireland, yet you said in your previous post "Do you not understand how old and obnoxious the anti-Fireland stuff is."

Dont kill the messenger. I'm merely pointing out the logic that went into the decision as I see it. I was defending Dansby when a lot of people wanted him cut and I wasn't a big fan of him being let go, but I understand why it was done. Same goes for Long, Bush, Fasano, Smith, Davis, Marshall etc. The difference is I don't sit in my armchair and pass judgement like I know more than the decision makers. To each his own I guess.

Dude, you came into a lets give credit to Ireland for his good moves thread and did nothing but rip him so I'm a bit skeptical on the above. As for being afraid to criticize him, that is BS. I said before the draft, many many times, that we needed to shore up the OL so that we could run effectively, force teams to compensate then punish them thru the air. I said it made no sense to pay Wallace 60 million if we didn't have an OL to protect RT long enough to get MW the ball. My mock called for an OG (Franklin) at 12, a trade up for an OT (Watson) and Eddy Lacy, a physical back to compensate for Miller's lack of power and pass pro ability. It's all on record. I could make a new thread every day on how Irish was a moron if I wanted to.

Obviously Irish went in another direction. The difference is I don't get a rise from bashing and scapegoating guys, not the GM and not anyone else either. I don't play the result and I remember the instances where I was wrong much more than the times I was right. Maybe you're never wrong, maybe you could do a better job than Irish, if that's the case then I apologize.

How can somebody that writes for a website be so misinformed as to state: "However, much as they shouldn’t be, the Dolphins are still in control of their destiny. All they have to do is beat the Jets at home."?

And doesn't the site have a editor to catch this?
