Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has been fired, the first coach in team history to be let go after one season, and league sources say longtime USC coach Pete Carroll is being targeted as Mora's replacement.

Carroll met with Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke and other members of the organization earlier this week. The two sides are close to a five-year deal worth $7 million a year that would make Carroll both president and head coach, sources told the Los Angeles Times.

While Carroll would receive control over football operations, sources said that Leiweke still wants to be involved in selecting a general manager to preserve some system of checks and balances. However, Carroll would have final authority on personnel and will be heavily involved in the hiring of the new GM. The issue is not considered a deal-breaker, sources said.

Carroll previously has said he's learned at USC that running his own operation is paramount to success and it would be a priority for him to set up his own football operation if a desirable NFL position ever became available. Carroll did not have that authority as coach of both the New York Jets and New England Patriots in the 1990s.

That may be true but deal is agreed upon and will happen. Article i read said it was a done deal tho

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports that Pete Carroll and the Seahawks are "close to a deal" that would pay Carroll $35 million over the next five seasons to be Seattle's coach and team president.

Carroll has often attributed his mediocre record in New England to his lack of control over personnel. That wouldn't be a problem in Seattle, where the president tag indicates Carroll would run just about everything.

The only reson its "close" is cause of Rooney rule. Its already a done deal that Carroll will be next coach

Crazy, but I guess he saw his glory years at USC fading.

Still, even if he flops miserably, there are only a handful of NCAA teams that wouldnt fall over themselves to hire him back.

EDIT: Any PAC10 kids likely to go top 10/20 on draft day? Will be interesting to see if he pulls a Saban and drafts heavily from his own conference.

Damian Williams is also a guy that jumps to mind. Not at the #6, but at #15 maaaaaybe. They might think (probably correctly) he will be available in round 2.

I like Pete Carroll. Glad hes not going to be coaching any of our rivals again.
