Eventually it does, however not really. What I mean by that is if a guy can get up field on the speed rush, it will work, OL's will adjust and they have to run a counter off of the speed rush, but until OL's adjust one is out thinking the room. Like a rook in MLB looking for a curveball when the first thing they have to do is prove they can hit the fastball.
In the case of Maybin though I look at it as Occam's Razor: A broken clock is still right twice a day. Meaning he got lucky and beat a fat and sloppy McKinnie for a sack. Not many other NFL teams are starting a fat and sloppy McKinnie at T. I'll be shocked if he makes any kind of an impact the remainder of the season, because he still hasn't added anything to his repertoire other than the speed rush.
Marc Colombo. They will put Maybin on the field during 3rd and longs, if the OL deals with his speed rush if Maybin just keeps the motor going he will come up with more sacks.
Maybin is just a bit player at the moment Alen, which can be plenty good enough, his problem has been he has not maximized what he does do well in the first place.
And that is how the NFL works, a guy can do one thing, guy ahead of him is injured, now he sees more playing time.
Just wanted to mention VO and Alen, I think perhaps you two are supposing that the scrap heap contains fine all around players who can do several things well, that is not how this works, the scrap heap, when mined properly, contains players who can do 1 thing well, but then grow into players who can do most things well. This is not the Draft, these are not "prospects" they are guys who were castoff for one reason or another, but who do that 1 thing really really well, so much so it covers their flaws as players, they will not have much put on their plates. Maybin or Moss are not likely to be covering a back 30 yds downfield, their role is boneless, skinless chicken breast, get up field, destroy protections, and disrupt the passer, that is it, that is all they have to be good at, 2 yrs from now they have to show they have grown, right now, this is digging in the dirt/GM specials territory.
Well, I have my view Alen what is yours? Imvho this is a specialized field, but really, it is not, what say you?
Fmr Dolphin Draft Pick Chris MCCoy has wound up in the CFL, not really a scrap heap player per se, but who knows?
Look for Bruce Davis to get an invite from the Dolphins perhaps for a role in their nickel package. He's a guy that just couldn't play at LB but in an undersized line he could be a good pass rusher.
Good name, that cat has bounced around the NFL a bit, but when all you need is a guy to put his hand in the ground and go with a speed rush he can get that done.
Don't need to be a genius to speed rush though Alen, highlight his strengths not his weaknesses. Or is that offbase?
Poor dude, he seemed to be getting on track this yr, but SD just cannot wait on him any longer as to count on him now is extremely unwise, what normally happens is a trade for a late rd pick.
*Updated* Best of the bunch: Antwan Odom Alex Brown Jacob Ford Jeremy Jarmon Stylez G. White Jared DeVries Chris Wilson (OLB in 3-4) Alex Hall (OLB in 3-4) Bobby McCray Eric Moore Nick Reed OLB's Brandon Chillar (SLB in 4-3/ILB in 3-4) Tully Banta-Cain (SLB in 4-3/OLB in 3-4) Rashad Jeanty (SLB) Jyles Tucker (SLB in 4-3/OLB in 3-4) Jamar Williams (SLB) Tyjuan Hagler (SLB) Shawn Crable (SLB/OLB in 3-4) Vernon Golston (DE in 4-3/OLB in 3-4) Thaddeus Gibson (SLB in 4-3/OLB in 3-4) Ghost has probably used his last shot in the NFL in Chicago, but he is the most primed for a Cam Wake type of resurgence if he went to the CFL, as for the rest, I'd say Tully Banta Cain is probably the best of the lot, and would be the best fit in Nolan's system, Nick Reed has some Ninkovich in his game and Alex Hall was a good prospect for the Eagles until injuries derailed him.
I watched Maybin play vs the Bills: -nice first step upfield Absolutely the weakest rip move I've ever seen from a passrushing DE, my goodness Maybin tried to rip, looked like Tim Conway trying a karate chop...just zero effect, he more or less pawed at the tackle, or tapped him on the arm. Dude is the poster child for popcorn muscle.
BA scrap heap guy, think he is miscast in the 4-3, more of a 3-4 Sam imo. The fact Cain has not signed anywhere, after having 10 sacks in 2010, sort of tells me that he is not 100% healthy.
Just to cap this one off, Jets tendered Aaron Maybin at a #1 pick level. Not bad for a guy the league passed on when the Bills cut him.
