liked the signing of veteran defensive end Marques Douglas on many levels. he is a proven bull, knows the new defensive coordinator & his defensive systems. will afford us time to develop across the defensive line w/o relying on rookies, while providing serious depth w/experience @ the position.
my only question is why did we let Jason Taylor go to the Jets? couldn't have been about money or age or talent. Jason could play the DE w/o problem. go figure... personally, I don't get it.

be it as it may, the Douglas signing helps our chances for quick development & a play-off birth.

i think it was about the perception in JT's mind that MIA isn't close to winning the SB and the Jets are.

I wanted our first round pick to be thrown in the fire so lets see what we got right off the bat...he has a size advantage at D end which is strange for a rookie....I wanna see how this kid's hands are gonna play in space..He's used to taking on blocks while keeping his eyes up..I think he might be ok out there against the run...

    good move/bad move?
or w/ it a bad move, followed by a good move?
I really don't get this one.
know the FrontOffice has reasons for everything they do,
but I am clueless what they could possibly be
in the light of acquiring Douglas.

You know 23rd, perhaps Douglas won't start. I think Odrick would still start and Douglas would be there to teach a little and provide some depth. But hey what do I know?

I think there was some disagreement about picking him up prior to the draft. I think Mike Nolan wanted him but there might have been some pushback from Ireland and Sparano to see what Merling has to offer.

There's a reason people keep bringing Douglas around with them when they want to establish a defense. He's like a Jason Ferguson. He's good at what he does, and he knows the 3-4 defensive style. He has that 1-2-3 rhythm, engage, read, get off the block. It's second nature to him. He uses his hands, tends to keep his shoulders square, he's got squatty balance and surprising agility and burst, really great motor. The thing he lacks is a dominating frame. That's not going to avail you in pass rush or when it comes to a guy running straight at you.

When you want to take that next step, it's because you have a guy with more dominating physicals and you're hoping that you've taught him to play like Marques Douglas. Kendall Langford is an example. What's going on with Miami at Nose Tackle is an example, Miami had moved on from Jason Ferguson to Randy Starks before Jason decided to retire. You don't keep the stopgap in long term unless you need it. I think the Jets are trying to move to that next step and that's why they weren't in a hurry to re-sign Douglas, although I'm hearing conflicting reports about the Jets having an offer on the table and Douglas being the guy that wanted to wait and ultimately deciding on the Dolphins over the Jets when the Dolphins made their offer. Who knows.

What I know is I just got done watching the Week 5 Jets-Dolphins MNF game and there was no comparison, Marques Douglas was just the better football player between he and Phil Merling. Phil Merling and Marques Douglas are both one-dimensional players but they're both opposite dimensions. Odrick is the guy they hope to be two-dimensional and that's why you can transition from Merling (who is a pass rush oriented guy) to Douglas (who is a base 3-4 run defending type of guy). In that Jets-Dolphins game though, even Douglas' pass rush was better than Merling's, so there's a consistency issue with Merling too in addition to him being one-dimensional. But Merling is supposed to be an 'ascending' player so we can't be sure how he would have developed this year.

I think with this develepment you'll see Douglas play in a lot of the 3-4 base sets when they need the style and rhythm, an aware player. But I wouldn't confuse that with putting Douglas in there when they need a strong run defender. Based on the way the Jets were using Douglas, I think they made it fairly clear that when they thought the offense was going to run the ball, they put bigger bodies along the line. Remember that Douglas is not a big player. Odrick will take snaps in the nickel therefore, and also perhaps snaps in the obvious run situations. He'll have the most snaps in all likelihood.

I think Jason Who? was allowed to go to the Jests because 1. his attitude was all about JT, not the team, 2. he is a little long in the tooth and I think this FO wanted to get much bigger, faster, and YOUNGER in the OLB area. 3. Parcells probably felt the age of our OLB's was part of the reason we seemed to lose most of our games in the fourth quarter, the age was likely a factor. And 4. lets face it, JP & JT were NOT the leaders that you use to build team chemistry with - they were about themselves.

I do hate to say that about JT and many of you won't appreciate it, but I look at the dancing w/the stars thing, his going to the Redskins, and if JT didn't believe we can take this team to the big dance THIS season, would you want him and that attitude on your team if you were HC?

Its a good question many fans may be asking themselves.I dont know the answer except that JT needs to get a SB appearance in his resume in order to assure his legacy in the HOF and in his estimation he thinks the Jets have a better chance .

As good a player as he has been over the years he has had a poor sense of timing .The year he wanted to be traded he missed out on the division championship.

Then when he comes back we have a losing season.

Let us hope the trend continues.

This guy reminds me a lot like Vonnie Holliday, when Holliday was playing the 3-4 DE position. Great move by Miami in my opinion.

I like his recent playoff experience, he was on teams that went to the AFC championship game the previous two years playing three playoff games, 2008 with Baltimore and last year with NYJ. He played 19 games each of the last two years.

-Taylor is not a 3-4 DE.

    -Taylor is chasing a championship.

I;d happily sign Adalius Thomas to fill the role that Taylor was supposed to last season, 150 snaps, passrushing specialist/depth at OLB.

Imho, a Coordinator putting into place his own system, needs some of "his" guys, Douglas is one of them, AT should be the other, it wouldn't hurt if a Safety who knows Nolan's system shook lose either.

This is a "what have you done for me lately" league and JT hasn't done for us lately. Last season, he played a bit better than Joey, but that's not saying much. We certainly didn't see the JT of a few years ago last season...not even close...That said, letting go of JT and not aggressively re-signing him is a good move. I'm not sure how much Douglas brings to the table, but he knows the system and is a 3 years younger than JT. One thing for sure, Merling, while being a disappointment so far, was having a good offseason and had shown some things to the staff. His off the field issues and now the injury probably sealed his fate as a DE somewhere else...JMO...

Maybe the front office want to rotate him with the rookies or a particular rookie. Unlike Porter this could help us as well as Douglas making the learning curve work to our advantage much better than working around a bad attitude such as Porter about playing time.

I think your perception is wrong. We didn't let him go to the JESTS, he chose to go. He chose their offer over a couple of ours.

    maybe you're right...

just difficult to deal w/ the loss of one of my all-time favorite Dolphins: Jason, Zach, Ricky, Dan & Shula
it is what it is: the end of Jason Taylor as a Miami Dolphin & the playing out of his last days on the field in another uniform.
unfortunately, can't even wish him well. he has become the other team, the enemy.

I'm sure Marques Douglas will do well w/Miami & was an excellent acquisition. we will contend in 2010!
