Pietrus and Gortat can keep the ball alive and add in Johnson too. I don't think they will ever be in without Jameer and/or Carter anyways. SVG will always have at least two scorers in there.
no they don't. neither one creates their own offense. Both play off of P&R and I would venture to guess that SVG will never draw a play up for either next season. Flip Murray would have been a better fit than Barnes. I like Watson as Nelson's backup though. and remember...I like Matt barnes.
Murray would have been a nice fit for that team, true. Still, the bench should be able to score points. Bunches of them? Probably not, but you've got three perfectly acceptable scorers there, and Pietrus isn't terrible. Honestly, I think that's more firepower than most teams can bring off the bench.
The magic won the east last year and they improved some...so yes..they are the clear favorites in my mind. if Boston were healthy..it would be Boston..but Boston is NOT healthy...and not likely to be either.
Mikael Pietrus single handedly outscored the Cavs bench. He is our scorer. Add good production from Watson, Barens, Anderson and Gortat, and we have ourselves a good bench.
I think Orlando is the favorite in the East, even when Boston is healthy, but I understand why your reason for saying Boston could be the favorites.
I outscored the Cavs bench and I was in my living room. Pietrus is not a "scorer". he is a complimentary player. I am talking about a guy to take slack for the second unit when Vince and Rashard are out.
But all 5 starters are never all off the court at one time unless its garbage time. There will always be scorers on the floor...
Exactly, and were not talking about a guy who can't put the ball in the basket either...he did score 18 in our only NBA finals win in team history.
Doesn't look good on the Watson signing. Supposedly what we will offer CJ is not going to be high enough for the Warriors to pass on. http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?STORY_ID=13399
What FinNasty said. We don't have to rely on one player on our bench to be the main scorer. There will always be one scorer while the bench players are on the floor.
I am talking about spelling Vince and Rashard. sorry...but you can't convince anyone that signing barnes over Flip Murray was the way to go.
You dont have to spell a scorer with a scorer... not when you have 2 other players that can go for 20pts a game on the floor...
I'm at a loss for words so excuse me. I'm glad to have Vince Carter here, but the loss of both Rafer Alston and Courtney Lee kinda hurt. I know I'm late to the party here, but this is what I think. We need to make up for the loss of C.Lee and Skip2mylou. I'm hoping Jameer is 100% again. Resigning Gortat was monumental. VC huge upgrade but for how long? 1 more piece man. We're not there yet. Hedo was a huge loss.
Umm, we're not one more piece away. We're there. The team you are looking at right now is a championship team.
1 more piece? What more do the Magic need??? They are easily a top 3 team in the league right now... and have all the talent you could ask for. Alston was not a big loss. He was a backup PG that couldnt run an offense. I appreciate what he did, but hes far from a huge loss... especially since we have an All Star PG coming back now. And Pietrus now moves into the starting lineup, who is better than Lee.
when you don;t have none on the floor. you need one. that is why the +/- numbers are so important. it is a long season. can;t have your starters play 40 minutes a game all year and expect them to be healthy for the playoffs.
1 more piece? Dude, what more do you want?!? They trade for Carter, they retain Gortat against every reasonable expectation, they pick up Bass and Barnes...to ask for one more piece seems ridiculous to me. This is your team, as is. Little known fact: Anderson is every bit as good as Lee. The loss of Courtney Lee won't hurt. Well known fact: Carter is better than Turkoglu. I can't disagree there. Murray would definitely have been a better signing than Barnes. I like the Barnes move, I don't think the Magic are going to have real problems with the second unit scoring, but they really could have used Murray in a "Microwave" type role.
I disagree with Anderson being every bit as good as Lee. Lee is going to be a special player in the league. I just can't say the same for Anderson.
Why not? Anderson put up comparable numbers to Lee this season and both are rookies with tremendous upside.
Lee has way more potential than Anderson does, IMO. He is also as fearless as they come, something you can't teach to a rookie. Posted via Mobile Device
I don't know that I'd go that far. He occasionally forgets that he is a shooting guard and passes up shots quite alot. Thats not the definition of fearless IMO. DOn't get me wrong, I love what the guy did for us, and I was disappointed to see him go. But its time to move on and hope that the team chemistry is as good it was this past season with all of the new guys coming on board.
The guy is fearless. Passing up some shots doesn't prove me wrong. Lee defended the opponents best players, drove to the hole fearlessly, and made many clutch shots for us last season. Also, he was the only player in the entire league that wasn't afraid of Lebron James on a fastbreak. Every player went for a layup and let Lebron block them. Not Lee. He threw it down on Lebron James and made James his little b!tch. I just don't see Anderson being as good as Lee is going to be. He could be a solid starter or a good big man off the bench, but Courtney Lee has the makings of a star, IMO.
Only after he went for a layup and got swatted by LeBron, lol... Lee learned his lessen, and threw it down the next time... I wouldnt go as far as to say Lee will become a star. I think he has the potential to be a nice starting SG for his career.
They were picked in the same draft, one pick apart. It's not like one guy is playing light years above his head and the other is a budding superstar. But if one of them has more potential, it damn sure ain't Lee. Anderson is two and a half years younger, posted far better stats last year, and you're telling me that Courtney Lee is going to be a "special" player and has "way more" potential? Take the Pepsi Challenge. Here's two unnamed players: Player A: 21 year old player with a 13.6 PER in his rookie year. Player B: 23 year old player (24 at the start of the season) with a 10.8 PER in his rookie year. If I didn't tell you who was who, you'd take Player A, right? Player A is going to have the better career 9 times out of 10. Obviously, Anderson is Player A and Lee is B. You're suffering from a classic case of "I watched this guy, therefore he's better" syndrome. (I would cite the Heaters who are in love with Daequan Cook and refuse to trade him as part of a deal for Carlos Boozer as another example.) There's absolutely no objective evidence to support the idea that Courtney Lee will be a better basketball player than Ryan Anderson. But hey, I don't care about the Magic one way or the other. If you want to wring your hands and complain about this deal, Den and Nasty will be more than happy to hear it. I'll just sit here and be impressed at the job Otis Smith is doing. I'm almost ready to stop making fun of him for that Rashard Lewis contract. Okay, maybe not quite yet, but he's rebounded nicely.
PER is a bad stat to use in this case. Courtney Lee played in 77 games and averaged 25 mins per game. Anderson only played in 66 games and averaged 20 mins per game. Another thing, PER doesn't take defense into account. That is where Lee, IMO, showed why he was so good. Like I said, he generally defended the opposing teams best player when we felt comfortable with him doing so. He guarded Lebron, Kobe, etc.. I want Ryan Anderson to be better than Lee, I just don't see it. Lee's potential is so high right now. He is very athletic, can make the jumpers, drive to the basket, and can defend.
PER is an EXCELLENT tool in this case. There's not a huge difference in the amount of time they played. If Anderson played 8 games for five minutes each, then yes, PER would be a poor tool because of the small sample size. But both players played a significant amount of time, more than enough to get a pretty good idea of their abilities. No, PER doesn't totally account for defense, you're right. But it does account for a number of defensive statistics, like rebounds, steals and blocks. So it's imperfect as a defensive tool, but far from valueless. Anderson had almost as many steals as Lee on a per minute basis (1.4 per 36 min for Lee, 1.2 for Anderson), and was a far superior rebounder. To make up that big of a gap in PER, Lee would have to be equivalent to Bruce Bowen in his prime as a 1 on 1 defender (he's not).
