I don't begrudge Kimbo for making a buck, I begrudge the media and the EliteXC for superhyping up the guy to joe public. If CBS could have just played a rerun of UFC Unleashed it would have been better for the sport than that pile of dog**** they put on tv Saturday night.
And on top of that, who in their right mind would not do the same thing he has? I mean who is going to turn down thousands of dollars because they arent ready to be where he is? Not me, I can tell you that for sure.
Theres no way one guy like Kimbo can destroy the sport. If so then what does that say about MMA to begin with? Thats like saying Michael Vick was the end of football. As for the HBO/UFC deal needed to save MMA, not a chance. Getting onto Spike was the biggest thing for that sport ever. Dana White is doing a fine job with the UFC and I think it'll continue to grow from here.
The ONLY thing that killed the UFC/HBO deal was the production rights. so it is not accurate to say "not a chance".
I'm saying no chance to the idea that the UFC needs an HBO deal to "help" it. Going to HBO would be a huge mistake. A big part of the UFC's success is having a lot of their fights on Spike and not a private network like HBO or Showtime. The UFC is in fine shape and in no danger of being "set back" by Kimbo or need any help.
What I pointed out earlier is that I have nothing against him personally, which I and others have said numerous times. I fully believe there are plenty of veteran MMA fighters out there that are annoyed by the hype that Elite has put around Kimbo. My issue is with Elite, again as I've said numerous times, not Kimbo. What I have been saying is that he is "hot" for no reason.
Elite XC is trying to make MMA look way too much like WWE. They really need to get rid of that ******ed format they have. All those smaller shows like Elite are really just the bastard children of the UFC at the moment. They have a couple good fighters but the way they approach the sport is just overly corny.
UFC on HBO would mean $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. A organization that we support with more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is good for us..the consumer. UFC getting on HBO would mean it is MAINSTREAM.
The more money you charge for a fight, the more of a risk it is. If the UFC has a huge fight, charges a ton for it on PPV, and if the fight is a bust, then their gonna be getting some major flack for it and lose fans. The sport of BOXING comes to mind. Going to HBO doesnt mean mainstream. Boxing worth watching is almost exclusively PPV and the sport is just now starting to regain a few fans after years in a coma. The UFC is fine how it is now and making a killing. I dont know why you'd want them to go to HBO, I think it would do a lot more harm then good.
I understand the money part (Even though UFC makes plenty of money as it is) but how would getting a deal on a premium channel that a limited number of people have make it more mainstream than a basic cable channel? I don't think getting on HBO is that big of a deal personally. UFC is already top dawg in the sport and will be as long as they keep doing what they're doing and other companies like Elite put out the type of product they did saturday night.
Yep, EliteXC is in an ***-kicking contest with one leg. UFC is the NFL to Arena football and Canada right now.
I understand your arguement, but I can always come back at you with this: Then WHY did Dana White enter negotiations with HBO? Why does Dana White state as his goal for the UFC to become as Mainstream as the NFL? (from "Bloodsport to Bigtime" CNBC Documentary)
I'm sure he is always looking for ways to expand and explore his options. Something like HBO could possibly be a substitute for PPVs once in awhile, create an opportunity for more events. As much as I love the sport I'm not sure it will ever reach the NFL level, although its a nice goal.
Any good business man will negotiate for a big deal if its worth it. My guess would be to move big PPVs to HBO instead of going through their current provider and hopefully thats all they were thinking. The UFC becoming as mainstream as the NFL has nothing to do with HBO. Are NFL games on HBO?
Whatd you expect him to say? "I'm perfectly happy being a small sport and make a mediocre amount of money. I have no desire for my company and sport to grow anymore."? I'm sure the other owners who control 90% of the company would love that.
No but they are on public telivision, which is something he has tried to do for some time now. The CBS thing enraged him I heard.
Sure they beat the UFC to network TV but at what cost? Look how that ended up. Besides I don't think Dana would have agreed to the terms that Elite did.
If I was Dana White I couldnt care less about that. Elite looks like an absolute joke on network TV, wana take a bet how long that stays on CBS? I dont know how long the contract is for but I guarantee the ratings are **** compared to any UFC program on Spike.
CBS got 4 million viewers to see this circus. They DID HUGE RATINGS. So basically they got 4 million viewers of which maybe half were prospect MMA supporters to get turned off by that clown show.
I think we assume too much about the casual fans who know next to nothing about the sport. A lot of us hardcore guys tuned in and thought the production values were bad (at one point, during a clench, the camera inexplicably went to a wide angle shot of the crowd for no reason and missed a takedown), but casual viewers who tuned in may have liked what they saw, even in its bastardized form, the fights ended in bloodshed, bruises and knckouts and honestly, that is what sells. Much like how in Nascar, the crashes sell, no one is gonna sell MMA on a three round split decision (like the McCoulough fight from last night). My girlfriend, who is a fringe sports watcher, loved the ladies fight and was entranced by the Kimbo/ear popping incident from Saturday night. She watches hockey to see them hit each other. CBS may have screwed up the presentation, but the content in the ring probably helped sell people on the product. I guarentee that if/when CBS puts on another one (and if 4 million is any indication for a Saturday night...they will) they will clean up their errors. I would be willing to bet that the extended ring entrances will be replaced with your typical walk to the ring and the dancers will be gone. That alone would help out a ton in presentation. That and the horrible lag in between fights. What I can't understand (and WEC did this last night as well) is how does a show go so far over? I mean, you know what the card is and what the maximum amount of time each fight can have in it (15-25 minutes), how do you go 45 minutes over the alloted time? It smacks of unpreparedness and not being able to produce on the fly. Cut out the boring long interview and background pieces, cut out the ridiculously long entrances and streamline the show to a maximum of four matches for a two hour broadcast (taking into account commercials and whatnot) and you have yourself a solid little show.
I think this article hits it on the head and champions a lot of the same positions I hold about the Saturday card. http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=dw-kimbo060108&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Anyone think Alves takes out Hughes? I def think theres a strong possibility he might if he can keep it standing.
yeah I think Alves takes it. Hughes is just about done I think. He's looked horrible in his last 2 GSP fights. (although GSP can make almost anyone look horrible)
That it NO WAY was a shot at ANYONE on this board at all personally.....im talking about directly all the "fans" over at sherdog, and the newbs to mma claiming they are hardcore mma fans who know what they are talking about..... Im just saying, the guy is doing what ANYONE would do.....who wouldnt wanna punch someone in the face, lose or win he is making 6 figures......who wouldnt?! And why is HE being blammed for "destroying" the sport? How about the promoters and everyone who put him as main event, when guys like robbie lawler are fighting before hand? Its not HIS fault he draws crowds like a MOFO.....guys got drawing power, its all about money....sports radio has commercials about jewlery and condoms.....it has NOTHING to do with sports radio, but it is MONEY.....its all about selling tix's and getting ratings and they did both.....whether u are a kimbo fan and wanted to watch him beat ***, or if you hate kimbo and wanted to see him gas and embarass himself.....regardless....YOU WATCHED....so they succeeded!
You are missing the point. My point is that Kimbo is a "useful idiot" that is actually hurting MMA more than he is helping. Just listen to talk radio. All these fools calling in thinking THIS is what MMA IS ABOUT. The critics are using this clown show to talk down to our sport. This is not good. I blame CBS for this.
There is nothing we can do as true mma fans, that know this guys a phony......we gotta just hope ufc keeps rippin out good ppv's!!!!!
But that is what EliteXC, UFC and others want. They want new fans, be it through the better PPV's or a circus show. The more people who are exposed to it, the more people will stick to it. So from that perspecitv,e it is a success, whether we liked the show or not. The sport is still in its infancy in many ways and any exposure it can get is good really. Around the Horn, PTI and now Sportscenter are all spending a considerable amount of time discussing the show and thus, exposing even more people to it potentially.
1 positive imo.....gus johnson was "listen-able" on saturday night..... also, where was goldberg? he usually is the "joe rogan" for elite xc
The day talk radio actually has influence on more than 5 people is a day when the earth explodes into a fire of puppies. Kimbo is going to help MMA because the dude who beats him will bring some more interest to the sport from people who are just interested in his internet fights.
Bobby Lashley has entered the MMA world. http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=6399&zoneid=13
