The Tomko trade makes the most sense. Their Pitching is awful.

Supposedly there are a lot of regular and advanced scouts at the Padres vs Rockies game tonight. They are there to check out Randy Wolf of the Padres, and players from the Rockies as well.:wink2:

Actually, a lot of ballplayers don't wear cups these days. They cite lack of mobility as the main reason why. I remember when Gary Sheffield was playing for the Dodgers and a foul tip bounced straight up and hit him in the junk. His personal Louisville slugger was bouncing around to and fro for like 20 minutes (yes I timed it).

The worst part is that they kept replaying it in slow mo because Gary needed time to recover and they wanted to show the audience why there was a delay.

He has struggled the last few games bro, but what you have to take in consideration is the lefty doesn't have very much run support here, and plus they were playing in Colorado as well. If Wolf goes to an offensive team I think he will be just fine. He can work his way out of a lot jams. We shall see. between Wolf, Maddox is supposedly in a lot of conversations as well.:wink2:

Report: Pettitte may miss time to testify

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=txyankeespettitteclemens&prov=st&type=lgns

NEW YORK (TICKER) —New York Yankees lefthander Andy Pettitte’s season may be put on hold as the Roger Clemens steroid saga continues to unfold.

Pettitte could be pulled into court for a hearing on the defamation lawsuit filed by Clemens against former trainer Brian McNamee, according to a report posted Thursday on the New York Daily News’ web site.

In a motion to dismiss filed in Houston federal court late Wednesday night, Richard Emery, McNamee’s defamation attorney, asked U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison to schedule a hearing to determine if the statute of limitations expired on Clemens’ claim against McNamee, according to the report.

Clemens has accused McNamee of defamation for telling Pettitte that the seven-time Cy Young Award winner had used performance-enhancing drugs.

“If the existing evidence doesn’t convince the judge, if there is any doubt in the judge’s mind, he should hold a hearing or set discovery,” Emery told the Daily News on Wednesday night. “That will disrupt Pettitte’s season.”

Ahhh, thought you were breaking news....as far as I know he was sane enough to wear one...I have not read anything to indicate differently. Just a freak accident.

Also, read that they think its only a 15 day DL stint and he will be right back playing.

    Crazy...lucky.

I was listening to local radio, and the Padres management staff is very busy right now visiting there AAA and AA clubs. Maybe be busy to see who they can bring up, or who might be packaged in possible trades coming up. The pulse on the radio is not very good for the Padres right now.

    * Mark Bradley of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution thinks the Braves should trade Mark Teixera. Although some veteran leaders think the team is still in the division race, the Bravos do sit 7 games behind Philadelphia and have been hampered by injury all year.

Teixeira signed a one year-deal in January and can become a free agent next year, but he would prefer not to be traded this year.

    ------------

If I was Cashman/Steinbrenner, I couldnt move fast enough to make this happen...Tex @ stadium would be solid especially in solidifying 1B for seasons to come.

The Dodgers are currently making runs at both C.C. Sabathia and the Pirates' Jack Wilson, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
Complicating their efforts for Sabathia is that one or two players the Indians want are also being discussed in the Wilson deal. Rosenthal hints that 3B Andy LaRoche, RHP James McDonald and SS Chin-Lung Hu are "likely drawing consideration" from Cleveland, though he offers nothing to back that up. Jul. 4 - 7:00 pm et

Indians designated RHP Joe Borowski for assignment.
It says a lot about how overdue the move was that Borowski goes from closing games to off the roster completely, but the Indians stuck with him in the ninth inning for 1 1/2 seasons despite a 5.57 ERA in 82 1/3 frames, including a hideous 7.56 mark this year. Based on performance alone he should struggle to find another big league job initially, but given that he's a "proven closer" you never know. Masa Kobayashi now looks like the favorite for saves, although manager Eric Wedge has yet to officially name a replacement closer and both Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt could also be in the mix. Jul. 4 - 12:55 pm et

Sources told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal that the Brewers are offering Matt LaPorta in a proposed deal for C.C. Sabathia.
Or at least that's what the Indians are telling other suitors in order to drive up the price. If it's true, then Milwaukee shouldn't need to add much more to the pot. Rosenthal says that shortstop Alcides Escobar could also be involved, but it's hard to imagine that happening unless the Indians sent additional talent Milwaukee's way (Rafael Betancourt? Masa Kobayashi?). Jul. 4 - 1:04 am et

Buster was on tv today saying the Padres are ready to start trading players, and look to 2009. He said a name that caught me off guard in Khalil Greene. I know his bat has hurt the team, but his defense is great.

OK, I just heard a rumor that I just have to report. I have a friend whose girlfriend works at the CBP. Apparently the Phillies may have a deal in the works to bring CC Sabathia to the team.....the deal would involve the Phillies sending their top closer (Lidge) to the Indians. Lidge is probably only a one year rental for the Phils so it might make sense. I would hate to see Lidge go but this is what I am hearing. (The Brewers and Dodgers are also still in the mix, but the Phils may have moved to the top). The deal could be done and announced on Sunday, according to my source. We'll see.

No disrespect to your source, but that trade makes no sense for Cleveland. If you're trading an ace pitcher for fear of losing him to free agency, you don't trade him for a 30-something closer who's also a possible rental. You trade him for a pile of good prospects. If it's Lidge and a top prospect, that makes a little more sense, but I'm still skeptical.

Yeah I doubt that rumor has any legs to it Roman. Especially since the Phillies two best prospects (maybe the only top prospects in their system) are hurt right now. Plus why would the Phillies trade their closer when they have no one to replace him with Gordon hurting and Myers in the minors?

EDIT: MLB.com is reporting that the Philles and Lidge agreed on a 3 year contract extension for around $38 million, so much for that rumor.

That's an awful lot of money for a guy who was yanked from the closer's role a year ago. The Phillies signed him at the absolute peak of his value; there's no possible way he's finishing the season with a 0.77 ERA.

The heavy CC rumor is still to Brewers. Mil keeps adjusting the package, I have to believe that is where he ends up.

Makes sense. The Dodgers have an unnatural affinity for those all-important "Proven Veterans". Unfortunately, the only thing Wilson's proven is that he can't hit his way out of a paper bag. If the Dodgers give up anything for him with that $6.6M salary, it's highway robbery for the Pirates.

Ken Rosenthal writes that the Dodgers are officially out of the C.C. Sabathia sweepstakes, meaning that the Brewers could be extremely close to securing a deal to bring the 2007 American League Cy Young Award winner to Milwaukee.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/...-Brewers-close??CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=3498

Rosenthal says that the Rays and Phillies are still in the race, but are also likely unable to top the Brewers' offer, centered around Class AA outfielder Matt LaPorta. Rosenthal points out the Indians' strong need for power in the future and LaPorta's 20 HR and 66 RBI in AA Huntsville. According to Rosenthal, Cleveland will also receive two more prospects from Milwaukee in the current offer. Taylor Green and Lorenzo Cain were mentioned previously on MLBTR.

You make it sound like Lidge is a big risk, come on he's rock solid, I mean it's not like that one home run he gave up to Pujols nearly killed his career and confidence or anything even though the Astros WON that series. Plus he's in Philly now, so if he messes up like that the fans will stick with him and cheer him on no matter what. Smart deal.

EDIT: With this contract it's pretty much a given that K-Rod will get at least 45 million over 3 years in the offseason, not sure the LAAOA can/will sign him to that.

I think K-Rod is def gone after this season. The rumor last year was that he may head to Atlanta. Not sure if thats the case, but Frankie has said he would rather not play in NY.

There's no way he ends up in Atlanta if he's going to get at least 45 million. I have no idea where he could end up but I wouldn't count of DET, the Cubs (depending on if they win it this year or not), O's, Texas or LAD.

There's a deal in place for the Cleveland Indians to send Cy Young pitcher C.C. Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers for three prospects, CBSSports.com's Scott Miller has learned.

I'd probably make that deal if I were the Indians, they get back a legit prospect that could probably plug into 3rd or 1st base right now, possibly even a corner OF spot. LaPorta is probably better/safer than any draft picks they'd receive if they kept CC.

The Brewers are obviously going for it all this year and no matter what happens in the offseason they can let both CC and Sheets walk and get 4 to 5 draft picks (that's insane especially considering the success they've had drafting in recent years).

News: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Indians have agreed to trade 2007 AL Cy Young winner C.C. You have to like Mil chances and their rotation right now. Will be curious to see the other two prospects, but keep in mind LaPorta is only in AA right now I believe. Still, I agree, Cleveland made a potentially smart move for the future, as it seem unlikely that they had the bullets to resign CC.

I totally agree. The Brewers haven't made the playoffs since 82' and with CC getting atleast 2 starts before the break its a good deal for me. Laporta is a big price to pay but they have plenty of young hitters that need money and 5 picks in the top 40 is huge.

Yeah it puts a lot of pressure on the Cubs and the other teams in the WC race. When I saw them play in Boston in May they looked dead, no one was hitting or pitching and since then they've been on fire. I think they have the line up and now rotation (imagine how good they'd be if Gallardo didn't tear his ACL) the only question mark is their bullpen. Can Torres, Gagne, Mota and Riske keep leads in the 9th?

Assuming the trade goes through it will be interesting to see how the Cubs, Cardinals, Braves, Phillies, Mets, Diamond Backs and Dodgers (I'm sure I'm forgetting some teams in the playoff hunt) respond. Do they make deals now? Is a team that was on the fence a buyer or seller now? Maybe this won't be a boring trading deadline after all....

I think the NL will be more aggressive, many more teams are in it and you have a easier path to the WS. Maybe the D-Backs and Dodgers have something to offer, but the Cubs, Braves, Phillies, Mets, and to some degree the Cards are tapped out. Should be interesting though.

  36. phunwin

phunwin Happy kids are Dolfans. Luxury Box

Neither the Phillies nor Mets have much to offer in their farm system, so I don't anticipate either team making a big move. The Mets already made their big move with Santana, anyway. The Braves are 6 games out and wracked with injuries, so I don't know that they'll do much. The Dodgers still have plenty of prospects to offer, though.

The Braves might actually be selling at the deadline; with Mark Teixiera a free agent, there's been talk that they'll trade him, rather than risk losing him for nothing. (As an aside, it bothers me that teams think that way. They'd get a first round pick and a sandwich pick for him! That's two potentially very good prospects, especially for a team like the Braves, who historically draft quite well.)

Interesting, but I would tend to think they wouldnt have made this move to get CC and give up the prospects without his injury.

    Latest:

Indians beat writer Anthony Castrovince says to expect the trade to be announced around 11am CST. As a reminder, the Indians are expected to receive Matt LaPorta, Rob Bryson, Zach Jackson, and maybe Taylor Green.

LaPorta, 2 other minor guys, and a player to be named later. 4 for 1...wow!

ESPN's Keith Law agrees, suggesting that Mark Shapiro could've held out for a higher probability return. However, he sees Bryson as the key to the deal. The 20 year-old is a projectable live arm.

And this is the same FO of the 2002 trade that sent Bartolo Colon to the then-Expos for a four-player package that included prospects Brandon Phillips, Grady Sizemore, and Cliff Lee.....they know when to say when and get youth...maybe they catch lightning in a bottle again.

Most articles seem to assume that the Brewers have no chance of signing Sabathia. I agree that it's unlikely, but I wouldn't rule it out. We've read repeatedly that Sabathia does not intend to chase every last dollar. What if he loves Milwaukee and he leads the team deep into the playoffs? The Brewers could let Ben Sheets and Eric Gagne leave and put that money toward a competitive five-year Sabathia offer. It's not out of the question.

Maybe they could have gotten more for Sabathia, but that's a pretty damn good package, and in any event, many of the other logical suitors for Sabathia had shallow farm systems. It's also possible the Brewers gave them a deadline. Sometimes it's better to take the bird in the hand.

And I think there's a decent, if not great, chance they'll resign Sabathia. A lot of teams will be skeptical about giving him a long-term deal, and rightfully so, given that pitchers with his body type tend not to age really well.

  39. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

The Dodgers will most likely be buyers at the deadline this year. Furcal is pretty much toast with his back and Jeff Kent is fighting injuries as well. With Nomar ready to break again at any moment, they need help up the middle.

The problem with them though is that all of their prospects have shown flashes of brilliance, but not sustaining it to the point where a team would be willing to send a bat over their way for a couple of them.

Even so, L.A. is only a 1/2 game out while using primarily a bunch of rookies, second and third year players. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a few small moves and just went with their team frmo here on forward.
