http://mlbtr.blogs.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/view/8691437 Heyman's source says C.C. Sabathia "is believed to be interested in a 'Johan Santana contract.'" Santana received six years and $137.5MM with a club option, full no-trade clause, and deferred money. A's, Four Others Interested In Fuentes At third place and seven games out, the Rockies are not a lock to become sellers. If they do throw in the towel, closer Brian Fuentes figures to become a hot commodity. Back on June 15th, multiple sources reported the Mets' interest in Fuentes. The Yankees have liked him for years. The Red Sox and Phillies have been known Fuentes fans for a while now also. Yesterday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post added one more suitor: the A's. Ken Rosenthal recently suggested the A's could be buyers, perhaps chasing big fish like Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, or C.C. Sabathia. The A's are just three games out of the wild card behind the Rays.
Good luck to the team that's dumb enough to give CC that money. His work rate the past couple of years combined with his weight is just asking for trouble.
Yeah Big Fat Bartolo Colon was an injury waiting to happen. I've actually heard that Colon's back wasn't that bad and he might have avoided the DL but the Sox are deep with pitching right now and really didn't want to move Masterson out of the rotation. I wouldn't say CC is a one year wonder, he's a pretty good pitcher and has been for awhile now but you don't give someone like him (or really any pitcher) a deal of more than 4 years and even that is pushing it in my opinion.
* The Astros announced yesterday that they have suspended Shawn Chacon indefinitely after the starter had a physical altercation with general manager Ed Wade. Reportedly, Wade had some harsh words for Chacon, who had recently been demoted from the rotation to the bullpen, and the pitcher flipped his lid, grabbing the 52-year-old GM by the neck and throwing him to the ground. The Astros might trade Chacon, but he probably doesn't have much value. With a 9.35 ERA over his last four starts and little chance of rebounding to be even an average starter. ----------- What a fool!
* The Brian Fuentes Situation Let's review the Brian Fuentes reports floating about. The Rockies closer has saved 13 games in 17 opportunities this year. On Friday, Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News wrote, "The Rockies would want two quality prospects, but they won't deal him until Manny Corpas can return to the closer role or they concede the division and wild card." Corpas is having his best month of the year, with a 3.86 ERA. But Taylor Buchholz has been untouchable all year, so I don't see why this should be a sticking point. Buster Olney agrees; he's heard that the Fuentes Sweepstakes will begin if the Rox don't start playing better over the next few weeks. The Rockies are nine games out in the NL West. On June 24th, Ken Rosenthal sang a different tune. He said, "The Rockies remain willing to move closer Brian Fuentes regardless of whether they climb back into contention." One reason for their willingness to trade Fuentes: they'd be hesitant to offer him arbitration after the season and then have him accept. Rosenthal said the Rockies "remain intrigued by Mets righty Aaron Heilman." The list of known suitors remains at five: Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, and A's. Sean McAdam wrote today that Hideki Okajima's struggles may cause the Red Sox to step up their pursuit.
I agree. If I were a GM, one of my cardinal rules would be to avoid any kind of long-term contract with a pitcher who could carry off the nickname "Mudflaps".
There is a very bad joke in there somewhere *cough* Fatty foods will cause your colon to break down alright *cough*
I was gonna say.... WTF? What exactly is that list supposed to mean? Guys who got the most Junk Mail in the Month of May?????
"Up this week are the July rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Included with the position rankings is a new overall top-250 list."
What I have read that 5x5 times and still dont understand what it says...especially after looking at the rankings...
It looked interesting. And yeah, about the description, no damn clue what it means but again, it looked interesting .
So its a Fantasy Baseball rankings list. Which is still Fubar because no pitcher (especially Johan) should be ranked in the top 5.
It's fantasy stats. If you steal a few bases you'll have more value than a guy who just slugs. If you're headed to the DL like Chipper you'll be lower than a guy who is more likely to play all season long etc etc.
Gotcha So, if you have a certain criteria for guys in a certain league predefined than all of thse particular criteria filter out the list that Alen has? Sounds too much like a mixture of Quantum Physics and Laws of Probability to be fun to me... What ever happened to the team with the most Runs at the end of 9 innings wins?
LOL....all, lets not go down the FANTASY trade rumor or news mill in this thread....dear lord, talk about spinning ones wheels and getting no where. Lets keep this one to true MLB actual news and trade rumors.
* Padres Likely To Sell The Padres have lost eight in a row, slipping to 9.5 games out in the NL West. CEO Sandy Alderson says "it's probably easier to see us as sellers at this point." He added that they could still look to buy if the Padres can creep up to 6.5 games out by the break (which begins July 14th). Here's another look at the team's top trade chips: Tim Sullivan says southpaw starter Randy Wolf is "almost certainly gone." Wolf was having a very similar season in '07 but was done by July 3rd. Aside from health concerns, Wolf has a 14-team no-trade clause that includes many Midwest clubs. The Phillies, Yankees, or Mets could make sense. Greg Maddux isn't talking much about whether he'd waive his no-trade clause. Fans have speculated he could go back to Atlanta or Chicago. Brian Giles wants to stay in San Diego, and can veto trades to eight teams. He also gets a salary boost if traded. Would Oakland be a fit?
*Gammons' Latest: Murton, Nady, Wilder Rumory goodness from Peter Gammons' latest blog post, aside from the Sabathia and Cubs stuff. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/ The Rays are focused on a right-handed hitter. Matt Murton and Xavier Nady are on the radar. As you know, the White Sox fired scouting director Dave Wilder and two scouts for violations of the team's scouting and signing procedures in Latin America. At the time, the Chicago Tribune said the investigation involved skimming and was limited to the Sox. However, Gammons says Wilder is telling investigators about other teams. Gammons agrees with Scott Merkin of MLB.com - the White Sox will not be active in the trade market.
Murton to the mets makes sense since they need a bat and the cubs want a defensive OF. Endy Chavez and prospect Jon Neise for Matt Murton. Makes sense for both.
* Rumor man Ken Rosenthal has a new column up. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/...hands-of-Manny?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=3498# At least three teams have inquired on the Rangers' Vicente Padilla: the Mets, Yankees, and Brewers. Jon Daniels is looking for "quality young pitching." Manny Ramirez's $20MM option for '09 isn't a lock. It's a tough call - .900 OPS players on one-year deals don't grow on trees. Rosenthal suggests David DeJesus or Melky Cabrera would be nice fits for the Diamondbacks, who aren't looking for a rental. He also speculates on names like Brian Giles, David Dellucci, and Randy Winn. Note: Rosenthal is playing GM here, not relaying inside info of trade talks. Rosenthal believes Matt Stairs would be a nice addition for the Dodgers, and notes that the Dodgers and Blue Jays have spoken. The Jays' direction for '08 is still uncertain though. Still sounds like it'd take a "knockout offer" to pry Rich Harden loose from the A's. The A's are said to like Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre. He can block trades to eight unknown clubs though. Adam Dunn isn't generating much trade interest yet. KC's Ron Mahay is "drawing significant interest." The trade market for lefty relievers is fairly robust.
* Random links for the afternoon. Interesting news out of Philly...Brett Myers accepted a minor league assignment. That was quick - the Mets designated Andy Phillips for assignment. Shawn Chacon cleared waivers and was released without pay, but the players' association plans to file a grievance. It's a matter of a million bucks. The Reds offered Ken Griffey Jr. to the Mariners, and they declined.
July 31 http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp..._id=2947461&vkey=trade2008&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb * Additional info: When is the trading deadline and what does it mean? The deadline is 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 31. Until then teams may trade players freely without having to go through the waiver process.
* Chris Snyder, C ARI News: Arizona catcher Chris Snyder has been placed on the 15-day DL with a left testicular fracture. Snyder left Monday night's game after being hit in the groin area by a foul tip and underwent an MRI on Tuesday. The club put him on the DL about an hour before Tuesday night's game against Milwaukee. Ouchhhhhhhh!!!!! * Chris Snyder suffered a fractured left testicle after being hit by a foul tip Monday, which may be the only injury that makes Kaz Matsui's anal fissure sound tolerable. Funny line from Rotoworld.
any news on the Pirates? I haven't heard any trade rumors other than they may be willing to spend money for once because they are playing half decent this season. Dont make fun they were in the top 5 in runs scored as of some time last week not sure where they are now though.
