I don't think that's the case. Getting to a BCS game means winning your conference or being one of the top 5 teams in the country. Making the tourney is much easier and while Miami may not have the tradition, they do have a lot going for them. It's a very good school in a very desirable location in the most storied conference in college basketball. There also is starting to be some nice talent from the state of Florida emerging in basketball. With the right coach they could be a perennial tourney team. They may not ever be a realistic title contender year in and year out, but look at what Frank Martin has done at a much tougher job at K-State. The right coach (maybe even that same coach) can bring Miami to a similar spot IMO.
I'm not talking about being a title contender. A certain coach can turn a program around and make some tourneys and build on that. Hell, Leonard Hamilton had Miami as a S16 team in his final year and had them as a 2 seed (2 SEED!) a year earlier. It can be done...Vandy winning a BCS title game...well...
I would like Martin as well. He is a maniac of sorts but dude recruits well and all he does is win...
I'm worried Shalala will prevent Martin. He is absolutely the right hire though. I firmly believe he would be the perfect fit to take this team to the next level. The only coach I'd rather have than him is Brad Stevens and he's probably not very realistic.
It may not be too realistic but the University of Miami is a big time school. They may not be relevant in B-Ball but the school alone could be a pretty darn good selling point. Only problem is do they want to pay...
I definitely agree Miami has plenty of selling points. In fact, Barry Jackson wrote this today, so you never know: There was also this, so it looks like the boosters are going to push for Martin, or at least someone good.
If that's todays Herald, I get it daily but forgot to read sports this morning. Thanks for sharing... I also know one of the Canes oldest trustees. I'm having a meeting with him Friday. Hopefully I can get some info outta him.
Not sure. Just read it about an hour or so ago. Might be in tomorrow's paper. Stevens would IMO be HUGE, but I don't want to get my hopes up. I really think he's a major rising star and is going to be a hall of famer when it's all said and done. I'd be very happy with Martin though. I think he's an excellent fit in many ways.
Another guy from Miami who's name is being thrown around is Alabama head coach Anthony Grant. I would gladly welcome him here. The guy is a very good coach. I suspect he'll end up at Tennessee though.
Link Martin has a past both in Miami High and K-State. He has my vote for the job but I don't think Shalala would go for it.
Larry Brown would be a good get for the short term, but I'd rather a guy lilke Martin who would most likely be there for the long haul.
I agree, but I'll take any good coach at this point. A guy like Larry Brown or Bob Knight wouldn't be here long, but they're big names in addition to being great coaches, and just putting us on the map is a good thing.
Agreed. I'd rather those guys than most, but to me Martin just makes too much sense all around. I'll be upset if they don't get him unless it's someone like Stevens.
According to Andy Katz, the search firm Miami hired told Frank Martin we're not interested. Not sure how credible it is, but more than likely terrible news if true as we could probably expect another Frank Haith type hiring, than a Larry Brown type hiring.
That's really upsetting if true because Martin seems like he'd be interested. I really hope they don't drop the ball here.
If they didn't even look in Leech's direction for football they probably won't sniff in Martin's direction either.
I think Leech is a different animal. He was fired from a university where he was having great success. Martin has had some troubles, but nothing major at the college level. Also they knew they could get someone regarded as just as good, or potentially better than Leech for the football team. I'm not sure there is a realistic option that's as good or better for the basketball team.
I was listening to the radio today and Luther Campbell (take it for what it's worth) and he said that there were some boosters that wanted Martin in a bad way. My friend, who is a trustee, did not seem to like the idea when I mentioned Frank Martin. First thing out of his mouth was he cusses to much...
Not at all. There will be no better option than Frank Martin this year , or any other year for that matter. We're just not an attractive school for basketball, and should be ecstatic that a coach of Martin's caliber is even interested, and shouldn't let this opportunity slip away. Seriously, if we let this coach get away because he cusses too much, I'll be pissed.
I actually remember reading something similar a while back (maybe in a Barry Jackson column). I have to say that's extremely upsetting though. I don't see how cussing should prevent a hire that could drastically change this program for the better. But instead they'll probably go with someone like Skinner who will bring much of the same and the Canes will stay a mediocre team that might contend for a tourney spot once every 5 years or so.
I'm seeing Richmond head coach Chris Mooney's name being thrown around as a possible candidate. Would be a great hire if it happened.
I disagree. With a premium coach like Martin you could contend for a tourney spot every year IMO. The Canes play in a premium conference, are in a great location, and have good academics. That's enough to have a solid program. At FSU Hamilton has them contending for a tourney spot just about every year and I don't think he's half the coach or recruiter Martin is.
I don’t see UM ever being a three sport school. But if it happens, hey, great. My fingers aren’t crossed, however.
Apparently the Canes officials flew to Harvard to meet with Tommy Amaker. But apparently they haven't contacted Frank Martin. I really don't get it. As much as he says he likes it at K-State, he sure sounds like he would like to coach at Miami. I think they are making a huge mistake if they don't at least talk with him. We're talking about legitamately one of the better coaches in the country that has his roots in Miami and has had success at a school that didn't have a whole lot of that before he got there.
The University of Miami announced today that Shawn M. Eichorst has been hired as the new Director of Athletics. http://www.miami.edu/index.php/news/releases/sme/
