All I will say about Richt, is his teams almost always seem to underproduce. This year is a perfect example. The SEC East is down from where it usually is talent wise. Yet he goes 9-3. Most agree he had the most talent of any team in the East. Yet, lost games he definitely should have won (UF and UT). He seems to do that most years. Decent coach, but imo he is not going to win against teams with similar top talent. Basically, if he comes to UM, I'd bet UM loses to FSU 80-90% of the games. I just would not want him.

I have learned from past experiences *cough*Harbaugh*cough*Gruden, not to read anything into teams being "optimistic" of landing a coach, but...

I hate it - he's a bible beater who'll have a bunch of church choir boys - He's also not that smart of a football coach. Oh well, nothing i can do about it, except fly a banner, maybe

I like it. He will build a winning program and get :theu: back on the map. Hes good at recruiting, player development and keeping a team consistently in the top 25. Thats a place we havent been consistently in a few years. Eventually hes due to get over the hump.

Wonder how long Richt gets before he potentially gets axed? I'll give him a chance, don't have any choices.
    Gotta love Miami football,

I really don't get the hate. This guy was probably the only hire they could have made that guarantees they are a nationally relevant team again. He may not make this team a dynasty, but the string of being unranked will end now. Look at how excited recruits, former UGA players, and former Miami players are about this hire. It was a good move.

So he'll win 9 games a yr, he's not a national championship hire, in my mind. He doesnt say "swagger" or "the U" to me - Hope im wrong, but i have a feeling in 2 - 3 yrs we'll be seeing the banners flying again.

I don't think he's a 9 win coach. He won 10 or more game a year for MOST of his career in the SEC. I'd imagine he could be a 10/11 game winner every year in the ACC. IMO the worst case scenario is he brings us back to perennially ranked team and then you go after the next big name. That's the absolute worst case IMO. This is seen by most fans and people in sports as a MAJOR win for Miami. I'd be shocked if Miami wasn't a top 5 recruiting team every year under him, and he's a good enough coach to make that count.

No matter.....im happy to eat crow if we win a national championship with him. If he brings Pruitt, it's a very good hire. If he gets Eason to come, then i might get out of my chair.

There's no doubt he's a good, proven coach. He's going to win the pathetic coastal every year. He only has FSU and Clemson to contend with and they both have coaches that are just as underachieving as he is. He can win a national championship if he lucks into an elite QB the same way Dabo and Jimbo did. He was one play away from winning one when they lost to Bama in the SECCG. He would of rolled over ND in that NCG. Kaaya could be that QB. Jack Allison or Jacob Eason could be that guy.

Miami is going to be ranked every year, probably pretty high too, but I want national championships. I'm not sure if Richt can deliver that. I've always been of the belief Miami needs a savage head coach. An Urban Meyer type of coach. I guess it's no surprise Dan Mullen and Tom Herman were 2 of my top choices. Both having coached under Urban. Butch being my other top choice. Richt is a good hire though. Especially when I was was half expecting a disaster hire like Cristobal or Schiano. If Jimbo can win it all after being the perennial 4 loss champs every year despite top 5 'crootin classes every year, so can Richt.

The biggest question to me is who else is being hired. Supposedly Miami is willing to spend big money on assistants. Supposedly the hold up on Richts part was him trying to get even more money for his assistants. If Richt really is lookinh to be more involved with the offense and possibly even call plays again, OC doesn't worry me too much. I'd love to see Dorsey get the job in that case. The DC hire is critical. If he can bring Pruitt with him, that's an incredible hire. I highly doubt it's even remotely realistic, but Butch as DC? That would be incredible.

Agree! I think he gets Pruitt to come. Brady James was quoted as saying "money isnt going to stop us this time" So, we shall see. Would Butch even consider leaving the cozy confines of a studio for a DC job? Probably not.....

Miami really wasn't in position to get an A-Teamer with this hire. Richt is solid though.

Yeah, Richt is an A-teamer IMO. He may not be in the Saban or Meyer category of all-time greats, but there aren't many more respected coaches in the country. Hell, even Paul Finebaum said this makes Miami relevant again, and he hates Miami.

He may not have won the big games up to this point, but at least he got there... I'm at the point where I'll be happy just to see this team play in big games again. 13 years of irrelevance is enough. Richt will have this team relevant again and make it a desirable destination again. That's the most important thing at this point. Let's win the ****ing pathetic coastal for the first time ever and the ACC and a BCS bowl first before we start worrying about dynasties. **** it I'm all in on this hire at this point.

Richt is an excellent hire. I would still have preferred to wait for Chip Kelly, but whatever, at least this helps UM recruit immediately.

I like that Richt runs pro-style systems. He'll fit in well at UM in that regard. Hopefully he brings his DC from Georgia with him. I'm OK with him retaining James Coley in some capacity.

Exactly. Richt is the coach most likely to get this team to that level. If he can do that over the next few years, I can live without winning a NT.

One thing that hasn't been talked about much is the fact that it's being reported that Richt plans to be more involved and call his own plays. I see that as a really good thing as that team was humming with him calling plays early in his career there.

He's also not competing against the coaches you listed. He previously competed against some of them and did just fine, particularly against Meyer at Florida. Richt is competing against Fisher, Cutcliffe, Swinney, and Petrino now.

    Mark Richt
    UGA HC 2001-2015 (15 years)
    Overall record 145-51
Bowl 9-5 (did not coach 2015 bowl)

    Average Record 9.7 – 3.4

    Sec Champ 2002, 2005
SEC east champ 2002-2003, 2005, 2011-2012 (03 and 07 they tied UT. UT in the SEC Champ game 07)

SEC East has been only UF and UGA since Fulmer was fired from UT (2008), maybe even before that as UT was not a real contender after 1998. UGA’s rivalry games (non SECE teams scheduled every year) is Auburn and GaTech.

Record vs UF 5 – 10. OF those 5 wins…. 3 were Against Muschamp, 1 was against Zook.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he is great for UM. Heck he is the best coach you've had in a while. But I think the talk that he is a GREAT coach needs to slow down. He is a really good coach and a great recruiter. He gets top 10 recruiting classes every year (it seems). However, imo, from what I have watched, his teams underachieve and do not seem to win the big game very often. For UGA UF has been their biggest game every year. Since he was there they were 5-10. With 3 wins just in the last 5 years (against Muschamp). That is not a real good record. Especially bc only one of those five wins was against a well coached UF team (07).

Considering those Meyer teams were national title contenders, and that the games were competitive, and that Richt was competing against Florida for recruits... Yes. I'll take it.

I don't think Richt will win a national title at UM. I think the team will consistently finish top 15.

If there's one thing you cannot argue about Richt, it's that the man is beloved by just about everyone around him. Former players, fans, even media members. Being universally loved like that is pretty rare in sports.

Here is a sign outside a bar in Athens. Greg McGarity is UGA's athletic director.

This is the kind of support a coach who "couldn't win the big one" and came off of a 'disappointing' before being fired gets.
