I don't know if that Chad Pennington comparison is all that encouraging to be honest. Let's remember Chad Johnson is here on a one year, incentive-laden deal, coming in with a reputation for not ever knowing his own playbook very well, and he's 34 years old. If he's looking head and shoulders above what we have on the roster, it just serves to show us how much work needs to be done on that position period.

The one hope in all this is...Brian Hartline's not been working, so I don't know that Johnson would look head and shoulders above him if he were actually working.

 

Until Wallace actually does something then to me that's just noise. He catches everyone's eye because he's a bus player. He's the kind of player that catches your attention getting off the bus. He's huge and he's fast and when your evaluation is limited to that level of superficiality then that's going to stand out to you right away and your thought it always "If he can only put it all together..."

 

actually, my one hope is that both Hartline and Chad both look really good in this system and become our clear cut #1 and #2 WRs for the season (or maybe that's what you meant). I like Bess, but I see him as a #3 WR regardless of who #1 and #2 are.

very true. but Chad seems like the kind of guy that if you stroke his ego and make him feel wanted, we'll be able to keep him longer, assuming he's productive.
But if he ends up having a pro-bowl season and moves on, I'd still be satisfied that we got a bargain WR to have a great single season. I doubt that happens with our current QB situation.

 

He has been working on putting it all together. I am hoping he has. I am not looking for amazing starter out of him, however a good 4th receiver would be a plus. Especially since he is a good special teamer.

 

Is he really any good on STs? I never noticed him really for positive reasons on STs, but I do remember a time or two noticing him for negative reasons. I thought Julius Pruitt was the guy killing it on STs.

Anyway, if I'm wrong, then all the better, but a team with Roberto Wallace as its 4th receiver needs a better 4th receiver.

 

Julius Pruitt was on the bench because of Roberto Wallace's special team play. Julius Pruitt did come in and play very well after Roborto got injured. A lot of people remember their first impression of him on special teams. One thing that is proven over and over again on boards is people rarely change their first impressions. He was a pretty good special teamer last year.

Well I am hoping you are wrong. We will see what happens when the pads come off. It isn't rare for a player to improve in their third year.

 

By what measure? How many tackles did Roberto Wallace have? How many penalties?

 

There is more to special teams than tackles.

EDIT: My memory sort of failed me. He played well in special teams in 2010. he was hurt after two games in 2011. He started off pretty crappy in 2010 and then by the end of the season he was playing really well. He had 8 tackles and was pretty decent at downing punts. Plus he stayed in his lanes and did the job he was supposed to do.

 

How ironic. You lecture me about how my low opinion of Roberto Wallace's special teams is due to a tendency not to change my first impression, when in fact it is you who has kept the same first impression of Roberto Wallace's special teams prowess from his rookie year, rather than updating it for the simple fact that in 2011 he was anywhere from invisible to bad on special teams.

 

Invisible to bad? He was hurt after two games. Holy misuse of the word ironic batman!

 

I still think he would. Just saying.

 

He was on roster for five games. He played special teams in two (poorly). He was inactive on game day (invisible) for three. He injured his quad in Week 6 and went on injured reserve.

Deflect all you like but you just got done lecturing me on what you clearly have done yourself which is take your first impression of Wallace from 2010 and keep that rather than seeing the guy that played poorly on special teams even when he was activated on game day.

 

Really? This is your come back.

Your entire proof that he played poorly is lack of tackles, which is like saying someone is bad at rushing the passer because of lack of sacks. Keep on digging.
