I don't think Hal would sign off in the middle of the season either. Plus I don't see any upside doing that deal during the season. It would be a huge hit and negative effect on the team. I don't think Cashman would trade Sabathia, even during the offseason but I do think he absolutely would consider dumping Arod and/or Teixeira if the opportunity is available. It's just too hard to replace Sabathia.
Frankly, aside from the chaos of what THE BOSS created (with the hit on Winfield too) during the early 80's thru the late 90's - mainly because our GM and Asst GM were smart enough to outwit him by posting bogus farm system stars to let him trade off, etc; the Yanks really havent experienced this type of need or approach ever. And no reason to think it would take DOWNTIME to restock and rebuild, it just takes a smarter approach to the details, which Cashman to date has shown and not been overruled by "The Sons of THE BOSS". So dont think its unreasonable from a NEW YORKERS mindset to say to Cashman, do what you have to do, but it doesnt have to be all or nothing, and never has really beyond the chaos decade plus listed above. Now, you spoke about how crazy and unrealistic NEW YORKERS would be when in fact they have never been faced with what you think would be a tipping point with one breath, but then in the next you are ready to string up Cashman as if he made the biggest blunder in the baseball universe by telling LAD thanks but no thanks on that deal when it was proposed. Please son, talk about losing perspective. You can hate on CC and TEX and miss the point of exactly what value they bring to the pinstripes, but just because the one guy you often love on in Arod could and should be shipped one day doesnt mean that LAD would have even been willing to take him in that package you claim should be viewed as a death-knell to Cashman. Wow, that's the unrealistic understanding of what Cashman has put to together and what he as overcome too. Let it work itself out this offseason. And while I am sure Beantown is all aglow with no payroll to speak of, I would still rather be in Yankees FO shoes than Saux FO shoes. A clean slate seems wonderful on paper, but reality is not paper, and its a given this will be 3 straight missed postseason appearances for beaners, it could very well be double before the idea of returning to playoffs is realized. Its a possibility for sure, as clean slate or not, that FO has yet to prove they know how to build a team. Right? Cashman has proven he can build a team, multiple ways to win a title, so lets see what happens this year, (remember 2004 was the death-knell then to proving Cashman lost it) just like with the turn around to 2009 Title. He will make the tough decisions and moves that give him the flexibility and fill the holes.....well, atleast he has proven he can re-assemble a winner from the ashes of the worst defeat in the franchise history (and all of MLB)....but again, Sox simply followed up the most epic collapse in pennant/wildcard history and followed it up with flat out quiting on the season just after the halfway point. Great they cleared salary...woohoo....they still have to figure a way to become relevant again, and frankly the baseball world knows that besides the Yanks, the O's and TB have surpassed them as an organization for the next few years on paper. So, so much for paper right?
This offseason will be interesting regardless: The Yankees have made it clear that they intend to reduce payroll below the $189MM luxury tax threshold. But Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wonders if Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner will change his mind if the team misses the postseason this year. Promising young pitchers such as Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda and Manny Banuelos dealt with injuries in 2012, which will make it harder for GM Brain Cashman to build an affordable rotation. Steinbrenner told Ken Davidoff of the New York Post that he's "frustrated" and still expects great things from his team. However, the jobs of Cashman and manager Joe Girardi aren't at stake, Davidoff reports. "No, not at all," Steinbrenner said. Joel Sherman of the New York Post looks beyond the reasons often offered for the Yankees’ recent struggles -- injuries and a lack of timely hitting -- and suggests the team has an offensive attack that’s too one-dimensional and a rotation that surrenders too many home runs. New York’s starting pitchers have allowed 125 homers, more than any other MLB rotation.
Tampa Bay surely has. They have surpassed them since 2008 but Baltimore really? They might make the playoffs for the first time since 1997 and they have surpassed the Sox? They're having a very good season, no doubt about it but you really want to bet that they will be able to repeat it next year? I guess it's kind of pointless to argue about this stuff now as we don't even know what the rosters will be like in April of 2013 but that comment was just funny to me. The rest of your post is kind of funny to me as you think the Yankees, if they have to reload and restock it wouldn't think it would be any downtime but because the Red Sox are you have them missing the playoffs for a possible 3 more years?
On paper, yes. I think it will be proven out....but agree it premature. One could say, between Baltimore and Sox over the last 3 years (including this one) only 1 of them have made the playoffs.
Again pointless to argue about it right now but I'd rather have the Sox pitching rotation next year as they are over Baltimore's. At least the Sox have two guys in Lester and Buchholz that have ace potential and have been in the past.
Ehh you like taking my points exaggerate them and love spinning them....reign it in Boss....you in no way can compare the 80-90 contracts with now...the length and money paid out now are obscene, that didnt happen back then they way it does now, no trade clauses didn't exist back then except for a very few rare players, now they are handed out frequently...back then you could move players rather easily, now contracts are so burdensome it is nearly impossible to move 1, nevermind 3 on one team....the business side just like everything else in baseball has changed, and it no doubt has been more negative than positive in my opinion....this team has a bunch of very burdensome contracts that are extremely hard to move without getting hosed on the deal...see AJ Burnett...expect the same moving forward.. Your idea of Cashman overspending on unmovable contracts as "building a team" is shortsighted and foolish and it is only a matter of time before the unmovable become not worth the money (one already has).....and thats when they get stuck...It is my belief they are just starting to enter that phase now.....barring some great GM'ing and Cash finds someone to take on these contracts....I will wait and see... In the end good GM's makes moves for tomorrow, I believe Beane said that once or something to that effect, Cashman had a shot and said no...we will see if it comes again or if he is stuck with his "building project".....
also, Welcome back Martin, nice to join in finally..... hey I dont care what he bats, what any of them bat, if they all catch fire going into the playoffs and stay hot, everything else is wiped clean IMO.... now is the time to perform and take it to the next level....good to see A-Rod get that extra base hit, Martin showing up with the stick, Pierce being real aggressive on the base paths scoring on that.....his passion is there always has been all year, now if Jeter could get it going? ...question here folks, if the Angles and Tigers dont make the playoffs, does Jeter get MVP.....man the writers play favorites and he has to be one of theirs... the guy is leading baseball with hits, and if the lineup behind him actually hit the ball, he would have had 130 runs already....I am rooting for him, only thing he doesnt have...
LOL, your points???, tell me when you actually make a valid point and stick to it. Then, I will consider not pointing out your waffling based on whether one of us correctly disagree with them which often forces you to do a 180. Then you seem to often do a 180 again, just to be pointed out again, it was foolish to think that way. Its a circle often with you. But I love a comedy, so I play along. First, you think its a fireable offense, then Finkle correctly tells you how foolish that mindset is, and you say, "Yeah, I agree"; then you make a second silly statement about irrational Yankee fans, and take me pointing out how naive and foolish it is to think its fireable in the first place, especially at the same time you claim New Yorkers have foolish reactions over imaginary non-existent examples you spout off about, while your original point is over a deal that never materialized the way you think it did in the first place with LAD for a deal for CC, Tex, and throw in Arod. Then, after claiming I am spinning things, you do the 180 again, to end with "Cashman had a shot to plan for Tomorrow, and said no!" (while backhandedly saying in effect he isnt a good GM). Again, I dont need to spin anything when you waffle, exaggerate, and spin yourself. But hey, Yanks won, TB lost, BAL lost, and we are back to 1 game lead with 4 vs BAL. And I will be at Sat game. So all it good by me, and the comedy you spout makes this board and thread enjoyable.
Yeah, are you going to be ok as once the regular season ends for the 3rd straight year, you wont have a chance see Yanks vs. Sox in ALCS?? I know to you, without that, the entire year was a waste.
Again your spin is representative of where you live....your like a politician....but it reality you sound as stupid as all of them in the process, fitting actually.... Is it a fireable offense?? Yup....Is Cashman messing around with some chick, getting "extorted" and bringing negative publicity on the pristine organization that is the Yankees a fireable offense, yup....BUT it all depends on the owner and what he feels obviously but by all means spin away lap dog, if it makes you feel good....3 years from now, when A-Rod STILL has 3 years left on his contract, people will remember he had a shot to pull that needed albeit unpopular trigger....and because Cashman is the GM, I would imagine with his superior influence and tons of monetary flexibility it wouldn't take a few years to reload and go again....but again the impatient fanbase isn't having it. This is fact. Lastly to say that the New York based Yankee fans would revolt if they pulled that move, and without words but through actions stated "Hey I told you we are reigning it in here with payroll, these moves afford us the flexibility moving forward to keep competitive in the changing landscape that is baseball" isn't false, why that is false? They would revolt as Finkle said earlier. Obviously you need to be guided on this so I will hold your hand, I say the New York fanbase (New Yorkers) because they are the ones paying a large majority of the ticket prices and make up a large majority of the sitting audience, okay I add in New Jersey too. However if they made that move I (the smart fan) would embrace it...because again give the Yankees 300M+ to play with this year and beyond, and I get real excited by the idea of Cashman having a a clean slate to work with, unlimited flexibility, and no George looking over his shoulder, again it wouldn't take long to be competitive again, would it take more than a year? Probably....and I get that and actually I would be excited watching it get built....the hell I care about chasing one championship this one year, I would like to see multiple ones over the next decade plus, they had a shot to set themselves up for the long run, they didnt so it says to me, this is the year they feel a championship moreso than others....they going for it like LAD....must be the whole Kentucky thing....I hope they do...in the end you cant have everything, eventually the well runs dry and you need to be proactive to make it wet again.... However this guy revolts, cant blame them, look at them poor things.... enjoy the game.... hope you get a good pitching match-up......and eat some crabs!!
LOL, you are the one that loved the AROD signing, loved AROD himself, you stood up for him, rooted for him. And now you want to back out and blame Cashman?? Brilliant. Say it outloud so it has a chance to sink in, AROD was never part of the LAD talks, never. Its all in your imagination. Right back at you; Its ok, we know your Sox blood is boiling over. welcome back 180! classic!
Mehhhh No I like he is the villain and everybody hates him, much like LeBron.....so I root for him because of that aspect....but I know his play doesn't add up to the money he gets, and will get of the next 100 years it seems he will be with them....and if he got traded I would be happy... Just quit you aren't good at this....
dude imagine me when I have a few beers....!! We gotta get together....those tickets havent sold yet!! Nobdy is buying those things hahahah, although it might be a good game you know.....still could be a tight race....less than a month away..
I would love to get together with as many as would be interested....my oldest and I are still trying to see AP start. Have to head up to NYU and pack her up, so looking at his comeback and if he gets a start at the Stadium, we will be there.
He is doing well, should be a go soon... It is time for the Yankees to firebomb these guys tonight....3/4 lets go now....A-Rod hits well in the Yards...
Injuries have played a major role in the Yankees' slide, as C.C. Sabathia, Alex Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera, Brett Gardner, Ivan Nova and Andy Pettitte have all spent time on the DL, and in the cases of Rivera and Gardner, missed much of the season. Beyond health, however, New York has also been plagued by a lack of situational hitting, as the Yankees have had trouble scoring with runners in position. The Yankees' main offensive weapon is the solo home run --- not a bad problem to have, but it leads to a somewhat one-dimensional offense that has issues generating runs when the ball isn't flying out of the park. The Yankees have just seven remaining games against the Rays and Orioles and also face the A's in a three-game series in September. Beyond those matchups, the Yankees' other 16 games are against the Twins, Red Sox and Blue Jays, so there's plenty of opportunity for the Bombers to re-establish their lead atop the division. The Rays have nine games remaining against the O's and Yankees, plus a four-game set with the White Sox and a three-game series with the Rangers beginning on Friday. The Orioles have 10 games remaining against the Yankees and Rays but otherwise has a fairly favorable schedule over the rest of the season, with only a three-game series in Oakland standing out as another battle with a playoff contender. The O's do have six games remaining against the Red Sox, however, and it would be ironic if Boston avenged their 2011 collapse in Baltimore by spoiling the Orioles' postseason hopes. -------------------------------- Still a strong contender, and we do have to turn our offense around....thats probably harder then getting Mo back this year, however.
Sorry can't blame the injuries on this one. Every team has them, some more than others but it's all part of the game. Part of the Yankees' problem is their lack of depth at both the ML level and in the minors.
That and they cant string 3 hits together.....all year long this team has failed to produced the big hits...the simple hit, hits that matter most in baseball....moving runners over, sac flies, RISP.....etc etc.... I thought yesterday after they tied that game in the 8th, they were going to win it and that win was going to get them going finally this month.....I guess not, on top of injuries everybody is just not preforming with the exception of Jeter... I will say it is pretty cool to see that atmosphere in Balt. last night, the place was pretty rowdy and loud, with the sea of orange.....BDH you ARENT going to Yankee Stadium South on Saturday...
Giving Oriole fans the benefit of doubt, if they drew that many fans for a Thursday night game, surely you'd think they would be able to draw that many (or more) on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday against the Yankees fighting for first. If they don't then it's a bad job by the fans.
Ohh now is the time when Yankee Haters come out in droves.....I love it.... jealously is a ***** kinda...
Come on throw 28 World Championships in their face! EDIT: Before I get people posting back the Yankees only have 27, it's a tongue in cheek comment with the 28 because I'm assuming they're going to win another one this year, right?
Not so much that but...it is funny, and you must experience it too, at the end of the year....people will come in and take pop shots....like I care....they did at the end of the year in the Sox thread last year.... although if they do by some amazing turnaround win it, your post would be a great sig hahahahaha
See but thats just it....they tease now based on a short term claim to a tie....and we have no need to throw a future #28, when we can factually stand on the prior accomplished 27. So sure, bragging rights the minute they become available like a tie in the standings is one thing to force the cockroaches from the darken dens ....but reality of what Yankees have accomplished in the history of the game is the ultimate position to have in the tit-for-tat of fandom. Would love #28...thats the next number to be achieved. But we dont have to pretend it will happen, we just have to let it play out cause eventually it will happen.
I agree with you guys, it was more of me just busting balls. But yes it's extremely annoying how people come out of the wood work to post when your team is down, yet are nowhere to be found when your team is doing well or their team is doing poorly. Just be accountable. If you want to rub it in, that's cool but you better make sure you're here to take it when things don't go your team's way too or it's hard to take them seriously. Not to call anyone out by name but that's part of the issue I had with a poster last year. He called me out because I didn't agree with his stance on the team/player and said I knew nothing and I couldn't be taken seriously but when the team/player tanked he was gone. Everyone's team is going to have a bad year/game/season whatever just be accountable. Same with us, we are all going to say things that turn out wrong, it's just the nature of being a sports fan. But if you want to give it, make sure you're back to take it. That's all I ask. Being a fan of the Yankees or Red Sox you just have to expect that's what's going to happen, it just comes with being a fan of those teams.
hmmmmmmm?? Actually I think I know what I need to do to bring some good fortune in this thread..... (runs to PM)
? Seriously though I'm not trying to call anyone out because I actually like that poster but it was still extremely annoying to have your credibility questioned, then disappear when things don't end up well.
Hey at least BDH got to see the most undominate "ace" in baseball in person.... Feel bad for Markakis who got beaned on the hand by CC and was seen just now getting a huge hug from Showalter while being in a hard cast.... Most likely out for the year, big blow to Baltimore....
are you ****ing kidding me!?! he was safe by a mile. He was halfway across first base before the ball got to first. **** YOU UMP! You can screw up like that in a game like this.
Holy God wow, just wow.....I could understand if it was bang bang, but this was a pretty basic call to make for a MLB ump.... It is kindddddddddd of a big call too.....
