I do think it's time to move on from Beinfest. Get some new blood in the FO.

Oh I agree. I just think it's weird how our front office thinks from the top down. We didn't spend THAT MUCH money but they act like we went all Yankee Dynasty throwing cash out for the best players expecting to win.

I don't think your perception matches reality. $190 million dollars in one offseason isn't insignificant. Being 7th in total payroll isn't insignificant. That's a lot of money by every standard. They should have expected to win and ownership has every right to be livid about how awful this team is based on the amount of money.

Loria isn't blameless, though. He's the one who wanted Heath Bell. He's the one who wanted John Buck.

And if the problem is player payroll, why is Loria reverting to instinct and considering firing his manager?

Sure we spent money for this one season, but most of that money was horribly placed. Maybe they should be angry at themselves for spending money in ridiculous ways rather than their manager.

How much of that money was dedicated to just Hanley, Reyes, Bell and I believe even Nolasco has a somewhat ridiculous salary. They spent money sure, but they didn't truly spend money on the team. They locked in a few names to sell tickets and excite us while ignoring glaring holes and hoping mediocre players develop.

I disagree with that. The money wasn't horribly placed. You look at how Reyes and Buehrle are performing. They're living up to their contracts. You look at how Hanley began his career, the contract was justified. He was an excellent player. JJ deserved his contract.

I could agree on Bell and Nolasco. Maybe John Buck.

Definitely not blameless. I'm just providing context about the amount of money. To say it wasn't "that much" is incorrect.

While the rumor is that the Marlins plan to fire president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest and replace him with assistant GM and VP of player personnel Dan Jennings, as reported yesterday by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. However, the Marlins are thinking about firing Guillen and have contacted at least one potential replacement, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.

Rosenthal reports that Miami is more likely to dismiss Guillen than re-structure its front office. The Marlins haven’t made a definitive decision regarding Guillen or Beinfest, Rosenthal writes. Owner Jeffrey Loria will make the final call.

Insiders say they can fire all the Presidents, VPs, GMs, or Managers they want, the problem is what its always been, they are stuck with Loria as the owner.

Firing Guillen would be a joke. And I'm becoming more and more convinced that the person Barry Jackson spoke to was Loria himself. No one else is that deluded about Bell and Buck.

Firing Guillen would make the Marlins look more incompetent than the Dolphins.

We can still contend next season. We just need to make the right moves. A little luck wouldn't hurt, either.

True! But what I mean is it shouldn't be all doom and gloom. Anything can happen in sports, so we should always have a positive attitude, even if it looks like your team might suck.

Considerable uncertainty surrounds Miami’s manager and front office with ten days remaining in the regular season, but one thing about the 2013 Marlins is clear: they’re lowering payroll. The Marlins will likely scale payroll back to the $70-80MM range after spending a franchise-record payroll in 2012, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.

The team lost money this season, Spencer writes. Miami moved into its new stadium after spending aggressively on free agents including Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell only to disappoint on the field (66-86 record so far). The Marlins have already committed $67.5MM to next year's team, so their financial flexibility will be limited this coming offseason.

So... let me get this straight. They trade Hanley and are looking to get rid of Beinfest and possibly Hill, Samson publicly says the team is awful and needs something different... but they're going to scale back payroll to basically a couple of million dollars higher than what they're spending now?

That's just pocketing money, that's not fixing anything. It's certainly not reinvestment.

I find it funny that MLB continues to grant permission for the Lorias and McCourts of the world to own a team yet continue to keep guys like Mark Cuban, who is willing to spend money on the team and cares about actually winning, out because he's "bad".

Oof. Got into a Twitter argument with Zaslow basically telling him this would happen. He got pissed, told me I knew nothing about baseball, etc. These guys (Loria and Samson) have a track record of negligence. It sucks for you guys.

How ironic is it that the franchise they were so desperate to rid themselves of in Montreal now has the best record in baseball?

To me that's not irony....that's doing what should be done in every organization, get a proper owner, get solid baseball folks making the decisions from Farm all the way to MLB and most importantly invest in all facets of the product that will ultimately play between the lines.

I think HOU and MIA are horribly run top to bottom. But HOU has new ownership and that alone could have them vault past MIA - and pull off a WAS - within 4 seasons (even with the AL switch). The draft will indicate some but its about Farm system and approach too.

Like I said, this season wasn't a base salary structure of anything. Most optimistic market projections had us as able to support an $85m payroll.

It was always going to come down after this season. It's a shame that we have a guy on our roster who's going to take up 15% of our payroll to pitch 5% of our innings. Even if he was still really good, it'd still be a terrible move. Stupid **** move of the century.

To be honest, I'd rather have a payroll $15m lower or so, if it means no more stupid **** like Heath Bell.

I stopped following him. He got annoying fast. Same thing with Rizzmiggizz, though Rizz is far more annoying, and Fake Pat Riley stopped being funny when it devolved into dick jokes.

Yes and "bad" meaning he's going to spend money on the team. The other owners don't want new owners coming in and spending big on FAs because it then forces them to spend money on FAs. Because god forbid having to spend money on the team, that's why there's a cap on the draft now. As the owners don't want to spend any more money than they have to.

Is Heath Bell the worst FA signing by this franchise ever? Can't believe the way he has come out and criticized Ozzie. You'd think he was Verlander or something the way he was talking about himself.

    LOL....another blown save by Bell???

Marlins right-hander Heath Bell told Jim Duquette and Mike Ferrin on MLB Network Radio that he made a poor choice of words yesterday when he implied he doesn't respect Miami manager Ozzie Guillen. Bell said he does respect Guillen, but repeated that he doesn't like hearing things through the media. Bell keeps saying his remarks were "totally taken out of context." Bell said he had to "earn the respect back of my teammates [and] my coaching staff" and that he wanted to keep pitching in Miami.

Guillen, meanwhile, told reporters (as per Capozzi's Twitter account) that several Marlins players called and texted their support for him in the aftermath of Bell's comments.

    Very cool.....good luck.

Perhaps desperate for just one positive story from the 2012 season, the Miami Marlins have announced they'll sign Adam Greenberg to a one-day contract and give him an at-bat against the Mets on Tuesday.

Greenberg, if you don't remember, was hit in the head in his one plate appearance in his big league career back on July 9, 2005. Now 31, Greenberg was the subject of a campaign to get him one at-bat. Coincidentally (or maybe not), Greenberg's one plate appearance was against the Marlins. Now he'll suit up for the Marlins.
