And I still think the Marlins would make that trade again.

What? Do you mean knowing what they know now, or back in 07?

They wouldn't have to make that trade today...

If they were offered Major Pitching Prospect A and Major Centerfield Prospect B plus Filler C and D for Slugger E, IMO, they make that trade right now.

I very much doubt that. What makes you think they would trade him rather than sign him to a contract extension?

The fact that they actually did make the trade in question, for starters. That trade was not about payroll, it was about prioritizing positional value. This FO loves pitching and defense. The new ballpark is a pitcher’s park. And yeah, I think they’d do the same trade (Slugger E for Players A-D) if offered today.

The trade was not about payroll? Really? I disagree completely. The year we traded him, our payroll was 21 million dollars. Miguel Cabrera was entering arbitration, a year after he had a .966 OPS. He was either going to get very large money in arbitration, or a very large contract extension to buy out those years, something we could not afford.

Now, if we had a 100 million dollar payroll, he would be a Marlin. No question.

That trade was about priorities. We know from the Hanley and JJ contracts that the Marlins had the cash.

What was their priority? To trade away Miguel because he was an alcoholic lol?

Cabrera was not traded because of positional priorities.

When Cespedes gets residency we're going to push hard for him. One would think we're the favorites to land him, even. After that, we're probably finished.

Then again, do we have a five man pitching rotation?

    • The Marlins were willing to part with top minor leaguers to acquire Gio Gonzalez, but MLB.com's Joe Frisaro says they weren't willing to move anyone from their everyday lineup. Both Logan Morrison and Mike Stanton are considered "off limits."
    • Within the same piece, Frisaro says that Javier Vazquez continues to maintain that he is retiring. The Marlins do not expect him back and are looking elsewhere for pitching.

Hanley Ramirez gave his clearest statement yet on a possible position change, telling the AP's Dionisio Soldevila on Friday, "I've talked with [Ozzie] Guillen, and what we both want is to win with the Marlins. When January arrives, we'll see what happens with the position change and everything else. If it's at third, fine. Wherever they put me, I'll do it in order to win." As for his surgically repaired shoulder, Ramirez described it as responsive and 95 percent healed.

    Vicente Padilla
has been dominating hitters in his native Nicaraguan league over the last month, and the 34-year-old pitcher told Osman Rosales Cruz at El Nuevo Diario that he wants to sign as a starter with a Major League team. Yesterday, Cruz reported that the Marlins were eyeing Padilla, and in today's piece he describes asking the pitcher about the rumor: "'Truthfully, I can't talk about that,' Vicente insisted at first, but later he came up to me without the recorder and told me, 'Maybe.'"

So our bench so far is Hayes, Murphy, Dobbs and Peterson. Not the best but not the worst.

According to Ken Rosenthal the Marlins are closing to acquiring Carlos Zambrano (probably for a bag of balls). If nothing else his interactions with Ozzie will be priceless.

Will we equip enough coolers for that tool to fling around the dugout every time he gets a hang-nail?

The new stadium doesn't have water coolers. You just bob your head into an aquarium for water.

I bet the Cubs are paying at least 80 cents on the dollar for him if that. There's no way the Marlins will pick up his whole salary. The Cubs just want to get rid of him.

Zero chance Zambrano is going to waive his NTC to pitch out of the pen.
