If this is true, it was always about the money.

If the Angels don't match the Marlins' six-year offer, Wilson will likely sign with Miami, tweets Jon Paul Morosi.

So we were used as leverage for the Cardinals? Eh. Whatever.

    Also re: Josh Johnson.

    2010: 2.30 ERA, 9.11 K/9 2.30 BB/9 1.11 WHIP
    2011: 1.64 ERA 8.30 K/9 2.98 BB/9 0.98 WHIP

I'm not going to bother with best in baseball terminology, but I don't know if there's a pitcher in baseball with better numbers over the last few years. Not saying there isn't, just dont know. I mean, the man took a no-hitter to 7+ IP in 3 different starts before June.

Not even necessarily used. There could have been no real offer from Miami, they could have just made it up to help Pujols.

And Desides didn't even say best in baseball. He said arguably the best in baseball. There is no way in hell people can think a statemant like that is crazy.

    2010: 155 hits in 183.2 innings
    2011: 39 hits in 60.1 innings

It will be great when he puts together a whole season again. He's a clear cut ace.

I will say this, I know it sounds like I am down on Pujols. I am not. He is a future Hall of Famer and will be good for a few more years. I think it is better for baseball as a whole, if he stays with St. Louis. Iconic players staying with the team they have always been on is great in any sport, esepcially when they have had individual and team success with said team.

However, I believe, at least for the next few years, that Pujols would have a better shot at more World Series Championships with Miami. If the offers are close to being equal...it may boil down to how he wants his legacy to play out, as opposed to simply using Miami for a better deal form St. Louis like most are starting to believe.

And thats basically it, in order for him to actually leave STL, it would have to be for more money...as soon as reports are coming out with the same offer, or 5-10 either way, you know the probability is with him to stay with STL....

of course crazier things have happened...

With Reyes' deal structured like it, I think Fielder and Buerhle is possible.

Fielder scares me but if we're going all in, those are the moves to make.

Just saw that. First, what a punk move by Hanley.

Based on the structure of Reyes's contract, he's still the highest paid Marlin the next 3 years and would likely continue to be once his contract expires. He wants more money now to play 3rd base? Come on.

Second, if we did trade him that would probably be the only way we could afford Wilson and Fielder so if he fetches another starting pitcher, maybe it's worth it.

A Gio or Shields trade is that much more possible if they are trying to trade Hanley.

But then again, he could just be getting bad advice from his agent.

Per Olney-Marlins have mobed on "emotionally" from Pujols but have not pulled offer (meaning they would still take him if he said yes within the next few hours)

Big offers out to CJ and Buerhle and whomever say "yes" first is a Marlin. Depending on structure could still make push for Prince, particularly if Hanley is on the way out

I referenced the arguably in my post. Josh Johnson is a great pitcher. But he also pitched in nine games last year while pitchers like Kershaw, Verlander and Lincecum continued to pitch well throughout the entire year. Verlander is the best pitcher in baseball right now. I don't even think that that is up for debate, is it? And it is hard to argue against Lincecum despite his record last year. About a third of his losses came against Kershaw who was pretyt much unhittable after the All-Star break, going 12-1 with a 1.31 ERA and a .89 WHIP.

Basically, much like Lincecum, the more he pitched, the better he got.

Again, this takes nothing away from Johnson, and I hope he bounces back as I love watching dominate pitching. But I don't think that he is the best pitcher in the game. He is better than CJ Wilson though.

If you can trade Hanley and Gaby for pitching/young 3b prospect, and sign Fielder and perhaps one of the pitchers you covet...slam dunk.

I do not want to trade Hanley, but if he really is *****ing about his salary, I think we should.

    I'm severly disappointed in him.

What about the season before? The past few seasons he's been rather dominant, like the best pitcher in baseball. Now, his durability knocks him down. But when he's on the mound, I wouldn't be hesistant to say this guy could be the best pitcher in baseball.

How long is it taking Pujols to finish this deal with the Cards?

Seems like something simple that should've been announced by now.

    Hope floats.

He was good the seaosn before. But Verlander has killed it the last three years. 61-23 with over 250 innings pitched in two of those three seasons. An awesome WHIP and ERA...the guy has just been unreal. And I would say that Lincecum has been pretty close to his equal in the NL. Which really bugs me to say considering I am a Dodgers fan.

Again, it isn't a knock on Johnson, he just isn't the best pitcher in baseball is all. I would GLADLY take him on my team when healthy.

So does Miami change gears and shoot their wad on both CJ Wilson AND Buehrle? Keep Sanchez at first and Ramirez/Reyes as your left side of the infield?

That is interesting to me as degree as well...

I don't think getting both is out of the question. But if we do, and if Hanley FINALLY says to everyone he'll move to 3rd, then this is an A+ off season.
