    Wanna laugh?

There are some reports that the Marlins offer to CJ Wilson is 6 years 85 million.

    Okay..now I want an investigation.

Haven't heard that, and Rosenthal/Morosi, et al are tweeting that STL is still in touch with albert's reps, but if we're down to talking about a no trade clause, then the deal is basically done.

Also reports that sTL doesn't want to go to 10 yrs.

I sure hope not...we still need a starter. But they can always pursue Gio or Shields.

Buster_ESPN Buster Olney Source: there is optimism that marlins and pujols's agent will work through hurdle regarding no-trade clause. If so, all bets off.

    If this pans out...

I would have broken the Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade signing. That Lebron James was ONLY considering the Heat and Cavs, the JT / Parcells tiff and now the Pujols signing.

I need to get paid for this ****.

Clark Spencer is reporting that the Marlins are heading to meet Lozano (Pujols agent) right now and that a "decision" is expected soon.

    On an unrelated note..

friend of mine, who is really good with baseball contract numbers, says that the reported 85 million 6 year offer for CJ Wilson has no chance of landing CJ Wilson. I agree with him. Marlins should ignore CJ Wilson and concentrate on Buerhle, or a Gio Gonzalez trade.

you also have to remember the biggest thing in Miami's favor is the income tax free status of Florida....

They could essentially offer less than most teams, and Pul-hos will make more in the long run...

Holy **** that infield would amazing. This offseason could take me from teetering on the brink of not giving a **** about baseball anymore to being thrown right back in. If this happens, the Dolphins need to make a splash and get their own South Beach FA frenzy going and complete the Miami Walk of Fame.

10 years and 225 million to a 31 year old first basemen who showed dramatic declines in average, RBI's, .OPS, and .OBP last year and is going from a hitter friendly park to a rumored pitching friendly one?

    YIKES.

I have no ill will towards the Marlins, but this might go down as one of the worst contracts ever.

Anyone giving Pujols more than a five year contract at this stage is asking for negative returns.

If it means getting 1 or 2 WS titles in the first 5 years, who cares? Teams starve for decades for WS titles. If they can afford it right now, do it. If you can have an infield of Pujols, Reyes, Ramirez and Infante all in their prime I'm all for it regardless of what the consequences 5 years from now may be.

Zito's is the poster boy for a bad contract right now. Even though I knew he was going to drop significantly, most figured that he would maintain some semblance of respectability that he had with the A's. The problem with Zito is that he simply quit caring about baseball. His last year with Oakland, he was doing an interview that focused on his music, as well as sports, and he was asked if he would rather win a World Series or a Grammy, and he honestly couldn't answer. I knew right then and there that he was done. The passion was gone and he was going to cash in and ride it out.

But even so, his contract is done in two years and the Giants won despite him. Pujols is on the decline and he is going to be on that team until 2022. Think about that. Oof.

Why not go after Prince Fielder if you are going to throw money around? Prince, surrounded by the pieces that are already there would be a perfect fit imo. Plus he is younger and cheaper to get. I just don't understand a 10 year contract in baseball. Especially for a guy in his 30's.

How do you know he's on the decline and didn't just have an off-year? 32 isn't exactly old for an MLB player and is still considered to be the prime. He isn't physically deteriorating at this point. I don't see why everyone is talking up his "mediocre" year as an indication that he will steadily decline for the rest of his career.

Fielder's body puts him at the same risk as Pujols' advancing age does. This is the type of guy that could get a contract and get even fatter and just become a blob of ****. His body will break down at twice the speed of Pujols.

Because history tells us so. With the exception of the steroid era, once players start to slip, they tend to not recover. Albert started the year off horrendsouly, and admittedly finished in the top ten of most offensive categories, which doesn't surprise me since the numbers across MLB were down. But having career lows in RBI's, .OPS and .OBP are clear indicators that he is starting to slip. And this is in a hitter's friendly park in St. Louis. The numbers look even worse once you check the splits as he hit just .279 outside of Busch with an OBP of .343. His OPS was something like .868 as well.

If Miami's new park is indeed a pitcher's park, expect his average to dip down into the .280/.290 range on the season. Not to mention that with age, injuries become a growing concern and with no DH to lean on, that means you are putting him at first base when range starts to decline as well.

I'm not saying he won't contribute. His homerun total is still there, for now. And Miami has some really good pieces to put in front of him in the lineup. I just think that the contract is wildly out of whack.

Our lineup with Pujols will challenge some of the best lineups of all time, at least for the next few seasons. I just wish it weren't a 10 year deal. Unbelievably risky.

  37. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

Fielder is a big boy, and yes there have got to be injury concerns there too, but you are also tlaking about a guy who is right in the front end of his prime, who can still leg out triples and inside the park homeruns and gives you the same power numbers and actually has seen his average rise. As far as the injury bug...Prince has missed 14 games since 2006 when he became an everyday player. And those were simply rest days. He is much more durable than one would think given his weight.

Again, Pujols is a GREAT player, and I understand pursuing him. But 10 years at that rate per year is going to come back to hurt Miami. Hopefully they have a trade clause because it's going to look AWFUL after a few years.

I understand the business side of this deal with regards to the market and energizing not only the local hispanic market, but the surrounding countries but sweet baby jesus, this is an unbelievably risky contract.
