That's my point. He developed a new sinker, and used it more. It was a new pitch, and he didn't get many swing and misses with it.

I agree. The closer tag is overrated. However, we didn't have a Venters/Kimbrel type of pitcher to add to the bullpen. We have nice pieces, but not Kimbrel/Venters. They were dominant in the minor leagues. We could use Mujica, but with the signing of Bell, this gives us a dominant bullpen and more depth.

Why isn't it going to work out? Just because he's going to pitch a max of 80 innings or so? That's poor logic. So, when Venters/Kimbrel get too expensive, should the trade them? Should Rivera have been traded years ago? Should every dominant reliever be traded once they get too expensive?

He'll prove whether or not the deal was worth it with his performance on the baseball field, not with your approval.

Because the track record for RPers signing deals 3 years or more have never worked out unless that pitcher was Mariano Rivera. And again maybe it's just me (or most non-Marlin fans) but I just don't think Bell is going to perform to his past level for the next 3 (or 4 years). And no Rivera shouldn't have been traded years ago but that's because the guy is just super human and an exception to the rule. Otherwise yes I'd use Kimbrel/Venters/Papelbon/who ever and once they became FAs if they're asking for crazy money/years I'd let them walk and be confident that I have guys in the minors, on my team already or a guy I could get cheap as a FA or via a trade. I just think it's a waste of payroll to give these guys that much for throwing a max of 80 innings all for a silly "save" stat.

And again I still don't understand how a guy develops a new pitch yet the pitch doesn't generate any positive results in terms of what the pitch should be doing (getting more ground balls) and yet he continues to use it which generates a negative result (hitters putting the ball in play). Why go with that pitch, what was wrong with his original fastball that he's had past success with? It just doesn't seem like a smart idea. It just sounds strange to me, doesn't make much sense. Call me crazy but I want my RPers striking out guys, not pitching to contact.

And yes obviously he's going to be the one that proves whether or not the deal was worth it, not me or anyone else.

Not every contract for a relief pitcher goes wrong. Bell can easily be the exception.

I agree with you on not signing relief pitchers to a large contract. I do. Last season, we didn't have a high salary pitcher and our bullpen was fine. The Marlins, however, decided to sign pretty much a sure thing in Bell instead of risking it with Broxton/Ceda/Cishek/any other reliever. There is nothing wrong with that.

What do you want me to tell you about the slider? I don't know why he added it. He just did. My point is the new pitch could be the reason why his K/9 declined. Hopefully, in Miami, he'll get away from that. Still, it's impressive that he still found a way to dominate while seemingly regressing in K/9.

That's got to be the winning bid. The Mets supposedly wouldn't go over $90 mill and there doesn't seem like many other suitors at this point. So unless he just wants to stay in NY, looks like he's coming to Miami.

Another tidbit about the PR stunt.

6:29pm: The Mets are now aware of the Marlins $100MM+ offer and are out of the bidding, Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets. Barring a change of heart, it would seem that Reyes is leaving New York. The Mets were willing to go to a five-year deal for $75-85MM with an option for a sixth year to take the deal over $100MM, but felt that they were stretching for the five-year deal and won't extend to a sixth, Sherman tweets.

    Boom goes the dynamite?!?!

And apparently the offer they made to Buehrle was a strong one.

$111m? That’s $21m too much, IMO. But hey, it’s not my money, it’s squirreled-away revenue sharing dough.

I don' care anymore about the offers or the money or whatever. Just sign everyone. If they manage to sign Bell, Reyes, Buehrle and trade for say Gio Gonzalez, we're going to the playoffs.

MLBN and Ken Rosenthal are saying that Reyes has agreed.

    It's not confirmed yet, though.

So Buster Olney tweeted that the Marlins agreed to a deal with Hanley Ramirez. I’m not making this up. Okay, so he deleted that and corrected by saying the Marlins agreed with Jose Reyes, but still. Olney is such low hanging fruit one can’t help but pick.

Anyway, while I’m still lukewarm on Jose Reyes for reasons posted earlier in the thread, it’s refreshing and heartening to see this franchise open up the wallet.

Successful off season is successful if they sign a Buehrle/Wilson or trade for Gio (unlikely considering what Beane is demanding).

They still need a solid starter, though.

The Dolphins are officially the most unexciting pro team in South Florida right now.

Even the Panthers are currently a 3 seed.

Did you watch the Pitbull concert slash Miami Marlins unveiling event? This franchise is now explicitly targeting the Hispanic demographic, and they apparently think one of the most important ways to do that is to sign as many high-profile Hispanic players as possible, or at least have the franchise associated in reports with those players.

it's no big deal. Hanley told the brass that Reyes is the only SS, he would have moved to 3rd base for.

Sorry, did in the Hot Stove thread....I am impressed it was pulled off 6/106 is reasonable to land him and remake the franchise (along with Bell).

Kudo's for stepping up....Loria backed it up. Hope it works out and he stays healthy!

I dont expect much drama from HanRam and Reyes ( the whole GodParent thing should put any issues to bed)

Can you imagine the frustration ESPN would have reporting if the Marlins sign Pujols?

If we do, we should have a party, Miami Hear style. Invite Lebron, Wade, and Bosh. No one from the Dolphins, though.
