Al east is going to be tough... Yankees, red sox, and Rays are a top team in baseball. Even the blue jays are playing good ball... I do think they will fade and it will be a 3 way battle for the division. 2 of these three teams will make the playoffs. Should be good!

UGLY UGLY UGLY win but i will take it. Nice to see the Yankes come back, even though they should have won this game no problem. Mariano is clutch. He still has it at age 40. Worked himself in a jam, and where most closers would have blown a base-loaded 0 out jam, he kept his cool and got the save. Impressive!

Huge win....comeback to win the series and this specific game both big.

Sox are beat up, Rays infighting and not hitting, so this is the time and week to really add a cushion.

AJ has to turn it around....he is pulling an early-season Vazquez and I dont like it one bit.

AJ's decline started when his pitching coach took time off for personal reasons. Hopefully the pitching coach comes back soon because Burnett is stinking it up

Do you honestly believe that? I know that's what the Yankees are trying to spin but give me a break. Can the guy just have a few bad starts in a row because he's pitching poorly? It's always an excuse with him and why he's pitching badly, last year it was Posada didn't know how to catch him, this year is the pitching coach, I'm sure next year it will be because someone switched whipped cream brands for the whipped cream pies he makes. Burnett has been very streaky in his career and he's either lights out or he's terrible, there's never any middle ground with him. He's just going through a bad series of outings right now.

you could be right but the timing of his bad spell is perfectly in alignment with when the pitching coach left so who knows. we'll know when he returns to the yanks. if aj still is stinking it up then the coach's departure had nothing to do with it

I wouldn't be shocked to see Burnett go 4-0 in his next 4 starts and pitch really well, just like I wouldn't be shocked to see Burnett go 0-4 and pitch poorly. That's his m.o. He's steaky and he's not as bad as he pitched in June so far so a correction in his performance is bound to happen, whether Dave Eiland or Johnny from the Bronx is the pitching coach. I don't think it does anyone any good to make excuses for the guy. He or the Yankees never say he pitched badly because he just pitched badly. It's just one excuse after another with him, just man up. That's all I'm saying.

You know i hardly ever agree with a Red Sox fan, but you hit the nail on the head there. A.J. is a head case, always has been, always will be. The one thing that helped him in Toronto was Halladay. Halladay was a stickler for professionalism and working hard. Not that the yankees as a franchise arent, but A.J. probably doesnt get the same attitude about working hard from Pettitte or any other yankee staffer.

Wow, Seattle has taken Yanks arms (especially Starters) out behind the woodshed.....not starting the week on the right foot for sure. Ugly.

P.S. I know Seattle has struggled to date...and holding onto Lee beyond this season is long shot; odds are they want prospects.....but a top of the rotation of Lee, King Felix, and Bedard as 1-2-3 could make a serious run if the bats would wake up (seems like they have vs. Yanks) to aide them.

that is scary good combo right there..

Yanks bats continue to sleep, and their bullpen is struggling.....sad day to waste a solid AJ start.

Not a great week for Hughes...2nd straight start where he gave up late runs and elevated pitches with 2-strike counts and 2-outs failing to put people away and it cost him each time....hope he corrects this.

Big comeback win by yanks, following rare shaky outing by Mo. Thames steps off the DL and delivers walk-off single.

Nice to pick up the game given away earlier in the week over BOS.

Hopefully next week leading into the AS break we snap out of the funk and get back to better baseball.

Big win last night by Yanks (Vazq) and with Rays beating Sox, the beginning of the breathing room march starts....

....and tonight Youk leaves Sox/Rays game with apparent knee injury???, weird...was just kicking dirt away from batters box, and something popped or tweaked on him. MASH unit in BOSOXville continues.

In other sports news not related to LeBron... Andy Pettite picked up his 11th win today. what a season he is having! 11-2! I hopes he keeps this up and wins atleast 20 games! Swisher had he'll of a fame, made a nice play in the field. Arod got the game winning RBI in the 9th and Mo got the save. Andy pitched 8.0 innings.

Wow this could be a big day for the Yankees:

    http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/yankees_on_brink_of_landing_cliff_b7oJw63k0cUXVdd02uuU1I

Joel Sherman is reporting the Yankees are close to landing Cliff Lee for Jesus Montero and other prospects. Buster Olney is reporting that if the Yankees get Lee they will most likely turn around and trade Javy Vazquez for either a MLB hitter (he mentioned possibly Jayson Werth) or prospects. Sherman notes that the Yankees offered up Montero to the Phillies in the off season for Lee but were turned down, if true that Lee to Seattle deal Philly made is even worse now.

Clearly if the Yankees do those deals they're in an even better position to repeat. Should be an interesting day as Cliff Lee is scheduled to pitch against the Yankees tonight too.

Why would the Phillies trade Jayson Werth for Javy Vazquez? That would be a mind-numbingly stupid move from the Phillies perspective. If those two are the centerpiece of the deal, the Yankees must be giving up something of tangible value in addition to Vazquez. This part of the speculation seems like BS.

As far as the Montero for Cliff Lee swap, I'm not sure I like it from the Yankees perspective. Isn't Montero supposed to be a once-in-a-generation type of talent? Why would the Yankees pay such a steep price for a guy they can a) win without this year and b) sign for a simple combination of cash and a 1st round draft pick this offseason.

Don't get me wrong, adding Cliff Lee to the Yankee rotation this year spells really bad news for the rest of baseball, but if the scouting reports on Montero have been accurate up to this point (the scouts have never waivered when it came to his bat), I could easily see this being a decision that the Yankees come to regret over the long-term.

Will wait and see on this one....the Lee and Werth piece is intriguing but both falling in place would be interesting puzzle pieces to fall like that.

Seattle wants a stud catcher...and Yanks have perhaps the deepest C depth in any Farm System (regardless of STUD potential rankings - they are just that unknown Stud potential) and continue to show the world getting a position of need is always an option through other moves (including C in other teams farm systems if necessary). And Yanks can throw just about any package together for Young Talent that Seattle is looking for....especially Catcher which is the lynchpin for Seattle.

Now the Twins have stud catcher in Wilson Ramos as well (perhaps better then Montero projections wise), but the other parts are not ....and am sure Yanks dont want to see Lee go to Twins....so who knows.

Crawford in LF (longterm) would be my preferred choice over Werth addition, but Werth is fine as rental as well. The question is will Lee be signed by Yanks, or simply a rental as well? Yanks can afford rentals for back-to-back WS championships if that's the best short and quasi-long term approach.

Swapping Vazquez for Lee is no-brainer as far as rotation goes. Even if its a rental...thats what Javy is.

Again, deal is far from done...so willing to simply let chips falll where they may. It may not happen and I would be equally fine with that and am sure either way Cashman will make any an all moves necessary.

I agree with you on the Vazquez for Werth rumor Olney is floating around, I think it might be more speculation on his part since Philly has been shopping Werth around trying to see if they can get back some good prospects since he's a FA at the end of the year and they have Dom Brown who's probably the best player in the minor leagues right now. Some of the moves Philly has made in the past 2 years have been a little strange so who knows.

I agree with you on the Yankees giving up Montero (who's been compared to a Miguel Cabrera-lite hitting wise) but the Yankees must want Lee now. It doesn't make much sense to me either since they have to be the favorites to win it all even without Lee. Maybe they want to make sure they keep him away from Texas, Minnesota or Tampa? I don't know, especially since the Yankees have been saying they want to get younger and keep their prospects to build to the future, it seems a little off to me could it be that the Yankees simply don't trust Burnett or Vazquez in a big spot? Who knows.

Word is it would be Montero and three minor leaguers, one of which is 2B David Adams (?). The Yankees and Mariners have an agreement in place that if the deal goes down Lee would not pitch against them this weekend. If I were to bet I'd say this has an 85% chance of happening, it's picking up a lot of steam and the Mariners have said privately they want to trade Lee before the 2nd half starts.

Wow, Lee vs. Hughes is tonight...so it has to go down asap if Lee is not going to start vs Yanks or be able to be flipped and pitched vs Seattle....thats a long time off between starts too. Weird.

I would LOVE for this to happen, only if it comes with an extension to....no way I give up Monterio without, having Lee sign on the dotted line.........I love Lee, always have, they become absolutely dominate starting pitching wise...AND they could trade Javy who is red hot, and has value...say to Philly, for Werth, like the rumor has it....they need a bat, Philly needs ptiching....

    1) CC
    2) AJ
    3) Pet
    4) Lee
    5) Hughes
