He's in the mix for sure...he'll have to earn the right, but he's in the mix. I only put ?? next to 4th and 5th, pending additional FA signings. Other names in addtion to Hughes & Joba are Sheets, Lowe, Pettitte, Aceves, Kennedy, and Sanchez as deep-sleeper. The two signings of CC and Burnett simply create improved top end and far more injury depth on the bottom end. Joba will be the interesting arm.....personally I like him for at least 1 more year as the late 7th, all 8th inning role. But thats just me.
I don't think the Yankees will seriously go after Lowe now. I bet they bring back Pettite for another year (or possibly try and sign Sheets to a short term deal). A rotation of CC, Burnett, Wang, Pettite and Joba/Hughes is pretty damn good. It's going to be weird seeing a Yankee team not have a bunch of stiffs like Ponson, Aaron Small, Shawn Chacon and Jaret Wright in the rotation for the next few years.
Not really, could have just moved him over to RF, let Damon DH and Matsui play LF. Melky has basically the same stats as Cameron, is younger, makes less, and is better defensively. The Mike Cameron you are getting is not the same as the one who was with the Mets a few years ago; hes regressed as one does with age. Sure Cameron is a 1 year rental and he can an ok job but hes a name more then anything at this point. Expect the usual 250, 150 k's and offense to come only in spurts. He gets blazing hot for a week then does nothing for the next two.
Are you really that upset with signing a guy who won 18 on a bad team last year? he carried a 4.07 era/1.34whip, K'd 231. After a god-awful start to the year he was 8-2 2.86/1.18 post all star break with 105 k's in 95 IP. His splits for his last 3 years break him down as an excellent 2nd half pitcher. I dont see how this could be a bad thing as the NYY will be competing for a playoff spot, and he usually owns Boston. Last year 4GS/2-0/2.60/1.23...24k/27IP. 2007 1GS/1-0/3.12/1.38 2006 3GS/2-0/2.25/0.95/18k/20IP For his career he averages almost a K per IP and is reliable for 3.8 era/1.3 whip. Slot him behind Wang and hes an ideal #3.
Even at his older age Cameron is still a pretty good defensive OFer and is better than Melky (who is overrated defensively in the OF). The organization really soured on Melky last year and they think that him being around Cano hurts Cano's focus and production. The money is no issue to the Yankees and I think they realize that Melky has no business being an everyday player (and privately I don't think they really feel Gardner is a starter either and if they do it's a mistake).
I am still not sure I like this proposed trade of Melky for Cameron. Cameron just seems like he has really been regressing due to his age. I am fine with getting rid of Melky, but there has to be a better target. I really wonder if Cameron's friendship with CC is a factor in why they are going after him!?
There was, his name was Torii Hunter and we missed out on him last year. If the CC factor is part of it, I say fine, even more reason. Its just a place holder for Austin Jackson. I am also hearing lots of good things about Juan Miranda and how our slow movement toward Tex maybe because the strides this kid is making. He could be starting 1B by end of year with Swisher and he rotating 1B/DH. If so, its interesting to pass on Tex. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=mlb&id=4884
Seems like its a dead deal for now.....who knows what Yanks brass is thinking when it comes to defense and bats!
I do not want Cameron. I say it again. Teach Gardner how to slap hit and with his speed he should be fine. Or better yet, try to get Roco Baldelli. Always liked him.
I will let it play out...but all we need is a 1 year rental, nothing long term, for that I thought Cameron fit the bill.....Austin Jackson is the real deal, so 1 year of seasoning will be fine for him. P.S. interesting you mention Baldelli...its from a BLOG so for what its worth: http://raysrenegade.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/rocco_baldellis_diagnosiswas_w.html
That is what I heard too, since Baldelli is treatable... I would really like him in the outfield. Plus if you trade for him this year, you can evaluate him this year before he becomes a FA next year. Thus, a year rental either for keeps or deciding if we move him to left and bring up Jackson!?
ESPN - Sources: Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees agree to 8-year deal This solves the missing bat, and I still dont think we are done with moves. I can still see finding a role playing solid defender for Left or Center. But this is huge...this is huge...this is huge.....just so much flexibility now. CC and Tex....now thats what I am talking about Cashman. Total kudos to how you played this one. So proud of them.
Heck of an off season.... Left and Center could still find trade options?? Pettitte as 1 year?? Love this.....
Whatever. It's not as bad as Boston signing him. As an old Yankee fan my dad just heard this and he was like, whatever... Tells you something about a lost pride. Enjoy him though Yankee fans.
When he played with the Braves he was nothing special, he seems to put up better numbers in the AL for some reason.
I don't think there's a correlation. It's probably about who is batting behind him. I can only imagine what he'll do with A-Rod behind him instead of Guerrero. Frightening.
I'm a yankee fan, and i find this news to be bittersweet. I love that as an organization the yankees want to win and put the pieces together every yr to put a competitive squad on the field. They never seem to let their fans down. But, i also like to earn championships and hate being accused of buying them. This is certainly better news than the other evil empire signing him, but it sounds like all along, Tex was looking to be a "YANKEE". He grew up idolizing donny baseball and his sister lives in Jersey. I think he will be a good acquisition, he will take the pressure off of arod in the lineup but do we really need the 4 top paid baseball players on one team? Baseball is in need of a salary cap!
Playing by the rules is just that....Yanks only bid on positions of need. If we cant fill from within we enter the FA market for positions of need. CC and Tex are under 30 FA Studs...Yanks felt pitching was #1 and didnt want a bidding war, and overwhelmed the best lefty ace on the market. Its only cost $$$ not a trade for players like Santana would have. Tex was a need, but yanks didnt want to increase a bidding war, so they played it perfectly with hindsight being 20/20. They stepped up in the end, quick and clean and signed him. AJ was a reasonable price, for mid 30 proven American League East talent. He says he has figured out what it takes to stay healthy. Time will tell. I think AJ's contract was 1 year too long, but if thats what it took so be it. Again, its only $$$ not giving up farm talent. We didnt enter other FA pitchers on the market, we didnt go after Krod simply because he was the best Closer on the market, etc. So, since FA has began, the Yanks put themselves through player contracts and preparing themselves with certain postions being available via FA vs. trading. I cant knock them for using their Farm system to fill the majority of roles, and even trying like last year to see if the young kids can step up, but also using FA to fill other needs. The one thing I have always liked about the Yankees FO, is when they have a FA need, and they enter the market, they enter it to acquire the need. It may not always work out...but they spend the $$$ to acquire it. If you are in the FA market, then get in....I give them total props for that.
Not disagreeing with you one bit. I love that the yankees spend money and put out great products. I'm just saying that baseball needs a salary cap. As, a yankee fan, i want all the #1 FA's to be yankees, i even want us to go out and get manny still, i mean we've spent 424 million, why not another 60 million more. But as a baseball fan, i would like to see other teams be able to put out competitive teams too. EDITED*
Its not about the money for Manny, I dont want his selfish act any where near the Yankees.....not paying a dime for that attitude. Yes, I vote for a Cap because it would help other areas of franchises and organizations (training complexs, farm systems, facilities...) presuming some miser owners doesnt remain a miser owner.
I thought Stephen A. Smith put it nicely when asked, "If you're the rest of baseball how do you feel about this?" He basically said, we are gauranteed nothing, but we build our teams one way and others another way. If we lose, we get mocked because of our payroll, if we win, "we bought a championship." Key work there--Championship. I don't give a rats poop how we did it, it pure jealousy and envy, you still have to play the games. Anyone can win and if we win a World Series bought or not, it takes nothing away from it. You can make the argument that its more difficult to get a team of stars together for one year to win a W.S. Great thing here is that these guys are young and they will be with us for a long time. BTW, I love this Teixeira deal. I'd love to deal Matsui and sign Manny and really piss everyone off.
I'll laugh that much harder win they Yanks fail to win the World Series... again. Either MLB needs a salary cap or let's start contracting teams. If I was Management/Ownership for the Pirates or Royals, I wouldnt bother showing up to work. What a disgrace.
Could be....(And I am not saying Yanks dont make a play for him, I just dont want it to happen). That said, I didnt really want Pennington, but what a idiot I was thinking that....its not Manny's production on the field, its his actions on it that tick me off. I didnt feel that way about Pennington - he is class and felt that way as he was a JET, but he was just a JET. I have never liked Manny being Manny antics. And its not Manny as a Sox, cause for years I would have taken Varitek in a heartbeat. And Boggs, Clemens, Damon, etc along with several others have jumped ship both ways over the years....its just Manny antics dont sit well for me.
It's OK HardCoreXXX, we've got 26 of them, you can have a few if you'd like? I'm sure there is one selling on ebay right now to pay for Manny's contract.
It probably would have been cheaper for the Steinbrenners to just sign up every member of last year's American League All Star Game. Unfortunately for the Yankees, baseball is still a team game........ hope all that spending gets you somewhere.
Manny watching his HR's from Homeplate makes me sicker than i can put into words, and manny being manny is a ridiculous notion. But, i want manny simply because it will chap the sox fans' arses a bit more. i hate sox fans...they are the most idiotic, least knowledgeable, most likely to get into a fight fans i have ever met. They used to be lovable losers, and they were fun to talk too, but 5 yrs ago, most of them changed.
The royals are a franchise that doesnt care, during the peek ticket selling season they have 5 full time ticket account representatives. In non peek times, they have 2 - one of them works from home with her own phone number that she pays for herself.
Classic...I love the "boohoo me and my small wallet franchise" posts. No such thing as small market, just small wallet owners. The New York Yankees have one obligation, and one responsibility. And that is that they are accountable to their fanbase that expects them to put a winning product on the field for the money they in return spend by filling the stadium, etc. Hal Steinbrenner gets this, Brian Cashman gets this....I have no problem with them failing at achieving the goal, cause they do their best to pull out all the stops and remove the obstacles and leave it up to the players on the field. For all the "hahaha - yanks spend and dont win" there is the "boohoo - yanks spend and win" posts. You all cover both sides of the issue perfectly, yet you should spend more time demanding your franchise put a Championship team in place via draft, farm system, trades and Free Agency. In the 2000's NY, AZ, LAA, FL, BOS(2), CHI, STL, PHI have done that. In the history of the game, the Yankees have won it 26 times. We have played in 39 of the 104 World Series. So whats your Franchises goal? I am glad to be a Yankees Fan!!!!
Oh please way to generalize and stereo type a fan base you probably have no personal knowledge of outside a few friends, message boards or ESPN. And I'm not saying Sox fans are perfect because I agree some fans have become way over the top due to success of the team, but it's true with any fan base in any sport. I just think comments like that are just dumb and catty. And I guarantee that if the Yankees signed Manny and he watched his HRs, you'd have no problem with it, just like you probably have no problem with Joba Chamberlain's celebrations after he gets outs in the middle of a baseball game.
Never been to a Jet game I guess? PS I always thought Yankee fans and the Holier than anyone else attitude was the worse than the Red Sox fan. (Not saying anyone here )
im not generalizing anything about sox fans - i lived in boston for 2 yrs. I've been to a jets game but only in miami, and i personally think patriot fans are worse. I'd take offense to manny doing his HR crap whether it was in a Yankee uniform or a Dodger Uniform or any uniform. I dont think joba's fist pump after he gets outs is the same thing, just as i dont think papplebon's stare and fist pump is.
I have been to Patriot games in NE and over 15+ Fins/Jets games in NJ, Pat fans are kitty cats compared to Jet fans. I think the whole players having fun thing is way over blown, take Jose Reyes, the guy is just having fun, playing the game like its meant to be, yet people get upset, I just don't get the whole thing. If you don't like it, get him out. Same with Manny, heck, as a Yankee fan you should remember or have seen some of the worse ever at show boating in Reggie Jackson and Ricky Henderson, even Mickey Rivers. I don't see one bit of difference in what Manny does than what K'Rod or Joba does. And they don't bother me either.
