I just started watching this show with Anthony Bourdain and I have mixed feelings about it. That said, though I'm not a particular fan of Rachael Ray, does anyone know the history behind their "relationship?" He seems to absolutely despise her and goes to great lengths on this show to let channel travel viewers know it. Just curious. Also, what are your feelings about it if you've seen the show?
“She's hugely influential, particularly with children. And she's endorsing Dunkin’ Donuts. It's like endorsing crack for kids.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21255843/
My wife and I watch the show all the time, not sure about the whole RR thing however. Anthony tends to have a dry, sarcastic kind of humor and personality which can rub some people the wrong way I suppose.
Thanks for the link. I hadn't heard that. I'm reserving judgement on his show for now and from watching the 4 episodes that I have, 3 on which he trashed her, quite publicly. He does seem very "dark" though. I've always been an aspiring chef, so I watch as many food programs as I can, plus I love to see and hear about people tasting food.
Anthony Bourdain is just a little over the top for me. have you watched alton Brown? he tends to give great info.
He's not picture perfect himself. He talks entirely too much about smoking and drinking. You could argue that his show is not for children, however. And, yes, I watch Alton all the time, as I do Iron Chef America. I'm a huge Bobby Flay fan as well. If I'm watching tv, it's either food programs or news / documentary programming. The rest is all garbage, imo.
Another good one on the travel channel is Bizarre Foods. His jovial, almost gleeful delight at eating almost everything "disgusting", as he puts it, is very amusing and entertaining.
Love the guy. I've been watching Bobby since "Grillin and Chillin". I love his "Throwdown" show too. Amazing how he can impress a very biased crowd and win those things more often than not. As far as Bourdain goes, he is going maverick very fast. I used to like him and No Reservations, but I haven't enjoyed it for a while now. He also hates everything and anything that has to do with his old employer - The Food Network. So that's where alot of his animosity comes from. I think the rest of it comes from him just being a putz.
He's got a great personality. He has many fans. My husband calls him Opie - lol. I love the Throwdown show too. It's amazing when I watch him on Iron Chef America - there is a judge there that does not like him at all - Jeffrey something or other. More often than not when Bobby is cooking, Jeffrey doesn't like his food AT ALL, and the competitor wins. Weird. Where was I when he worked for the Food Network?
I watch alot of those cooking shows with my wife, as I love to Barbeque. I really like Alton Brown, and the Throwdowns with Bobby Flay, but Anthony Bourdain trying things like Scorpions and chocolate covered grasshoppers, etc... is just a little disgusting to me. I'm never going to eat those things, so I'll stick to the more common themes. I have thought about asking someone to start a forum on this board for recipes, barbequing, stuff like that...I think it would be really interesting, as I think I have a few good recipes, as I'm sure others on this board do as well.
Well, he is from Jersey... I do like Bourdain's show, as well as some of his writing. It's not so much his dry, sardonic humor as his ability to get inside the food and culture of everyday life around the world. Not the tourist stuff, but the REAL stuff. As far as his beef w/ RR, I think most of that is she's just a perky bunny w/ no real culinary training. The longer you watch his show, the more you'll realize how much he totally despises perky people (which is one of the reasons I like him). He is a maverick, and not for the masses. Of course, he never wanted to be for the masses, and anyone that has a healthy disdain for pop culture, suburbia and the like appreciates and gets where he's coming from. If that's not you, then you're probably better off watching the Bobby Flay's and Rachel Ray's. You wouldn't know it, but him and Mario Batali are good friends (as well as Iron Chef Morimoto). Bourdain's problem is that he just can't(or won't) put on the put on the public face that the other two can. On another note, I like AB as well. His is the one show I can't miss on FN. It's like Jim Henson doing a cooking show for adults.
Why don't you start it out? Create a food thread here in The Lounge and start sharing your recipes. I'm sure everyone else will follow suit. BTW - we do have an existing one in the paid forums, but if you can't afford that, let's all go ahead and share our recipes here - so everyone can benefit.
Thanks. I had no idea he was from Jersey. I'll keep watching it, but I saw the episode in Japan with Chef Morimoto today.
Has anyone else tried Dan Marinos recipe for meatloaf? It's called Dan's Marvy Meatloaf, and it is really good. I have the recipe. If anyone else is interested, I'd be happy to post it for you.
Many chef's dislike Rachel Ray b/c she has little or no culinary training. They see her as just a personality with very little cooking ability.
Absolutely - please go ahead and post it. Do you want me to start a new thread or would you like to? Thanks!
Travis - I wish I had NFL Network - I'd be watching that 24-7. I watch the sports channels too, but, up here, all they're talking about right now is Brett Favre.
