Like I said, its somewhat deserved. He did a lot of it to himself. I have a hard time feeling bad for people who just dig their own grave.

Hmm, Bo Jackson talked in the third person coming out of Auburn and no one said a thing, and yet Newton does the same and "Oh no!!!!"

Because Bo Jackson could back it up on the field.

That's the point. No one knows for sure. With Jackson everyone was as sure as he was. A lot of people don't think Cam can. I don't.

its more then that and you know it. People liked bo Jackson because bo wasn't a cheat, he wasn't scandalous, and he wasn't a thief. If it was just a matter of opinion about newtons game, then newton would get more good press but he's not a particularly likable figure because of what he did; not because of what others have done to him. What people like you are doing is enabling players like him to do more of the same crap.

Hmm..surprised it took this long, my question is, why isn't Jake Locker drawing the same comparisons?

Locker was more athletic than Newton, yet was a much worse passer, his footwork is atrocious, and his accuracy spotty.

    And yet...

In other words, the FUD is going out in the hopes of Newton falling to some teams later in the first.

Well, I think he is going to slide a bit anyway Des, that isn't my issue with all of this, it is the way Newton and Newton alone is being singled out for some of the most silly reasons.

Hmm, now what if, Newton slides to #15....and we take a Wr..:shifty:

keep talkin about what your seein outside of a 5 step drop in regard to his presence and mechanics?..I dont see the accuracy that fits into tight windows either.

Hes being singled out because he was targeted for his actions, and when that happens, you have to check your approach to the next level because of the scrutiny, he did not..Just be smart enough to know when to keep your head down and your mouth shut.

I understand your angle I think, you want some entertainment value and Newton has some of that drama...however, there is a reason why they use the term red flag..it affects how teams draft, regardless of skillset..

I have to laugh at this thread. The whole premise of this thread is that the media is trying to tear Cam Newton down. That's hardly the case. If anything, the media is responsible for inflating his status to a point it did not deserve in the first place.

I agree that the media isn't focusing on his on the field play that much, and the reason for that is that it would expose their agenda for inflating his status. If you break down his game, you see very few aspects that translate to the NFL level. He comes from a spread option offense and has never played in a pro style system at any level. This does not translate to the NFL. Making high low half field reads at the college level does not translate to the NFL level. Running the ball for 150+ yards in 6 of your 14 college games does not translate to the NFL. If you look at Cam's passing metrics, what player in the NFL does he most resemble based on that player's college metrics? The player the Cam Newton fans do not want to compare him to - Vince Young. In fact, Vince Young's metrics were slightly better in college than Cam's. The reason Vince Young has failed as a passer in the NFL is multi factorial. For one, he does not have the work ethic to succeed as a passer in the NFL. However, the biggest effect on him is his reliance on his legs. He cannot overcome that. Vince also failed to make the transition from a non pro style offense that had him making one read and gave him a run/pass option on damn near every pass play.

As far as Cam Newton's comments go, it just puts further questions in the minds of the smart NFL people about his desire and work ethic. Cam is coming off to many as a player who is more interested in being a celebrity than he is with being a football player or a quarterback.

  15. What he should of said was that he has achieved all that he could at this level and feels ready to to prove it again at the next level. There is a diffewrence between confidence and arrogance. Either way he will have to back it up on the field. Namath was arrogant but backed it up Lienhert on the other hand could not. Which one Newton will more closely emulate is anybodys guess at this point. Raw talent is not enough at the NFL level, they all have that. It is the discipline to develop that talent that matters and based on his own words he has brought his level of commitment into question. It was not a smart comment to make when building an image predraft.

    This.

I said a few months ago that this would be a tough transition for Cam..... not just because of the obvious but also because, even though he runs fast, he has slower feet in the pocket when it comes to dropping back and squaring up to his targets etc.

This wasn't a problem from the gun, but from under center it will continue to create chaos b/c he'll be forced to speed up his arm delivery to compensate for his feet, which will sail a lot of passes (we saw this at the combine, and this was occurring without any defenders bearing down on him). IMO, once the pressure gets on him during live action, we'll see even more passes sailing and off target.

Based on his past, he's shown a propensity for poor decision making, so when he has to read the field on his own <combined with more pressure than he's accustomed to & poor foot mechanics> he's going to be a pick machine. The first time he gets laid out and realizes this isn't college anymore, his confidence will turn to crap b/c he knows that he relies too much on his natural ability and not enough on the mental aspect of the game.

IMO we're going to see a kid become extremely indecisive in his play and decision making, and the ensuing pressure and fan criticism will cause him to crack.

Bo wasn't a quarterback responsible for running a complex NFL offense. All Bo had to do was run the ball. I'm sorry, but there's no way you can compare a running back to a QB with this. The expectations etc are entirely different.

thats funny, when hes in front of the camera, I dont have to wait long for him to say something stupid, ignorant, or arrogant, happens every time.

I think team newton accomplished their plan...showcase as mush physical athleticism to wow the public, to cover up the flaws..

I see similar things with his mechanics and accuracy,I dont think this kid can fit the ball accurately into tight windows, sailing footballs will be a problem for him no question, pick machine could be apropo..

Good detailed analysis TP..I believe you have made some points that only a few see..

Thanks Deej. IMO they can work on his mechanics all they want, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough. IMO his size works against him in this regard b/c I see a guy whose legs & feet look heavy and take too long to go through the motions and set up. However, when you watch Josh Freeman, you see a guy who looks much lighter on his feet. We all know if the feet aren't there, the ball won't be there either.

It's one thing when he knows presnap where the ball is going and can be more prepared to have his feet set <especially from the gun>, but it's another thing to dance through his progressions not knowing where the ball's gonna go <and doing so after dropping back from under center>.

IMO we cant just assume that the mechanics will develop. That alone makes him a risk in my book.

I dont know if just game situation that makes him lose his mechanics but he surely looked good to me at the combine/proday in that dept..He had nice parallel balace throughout his drop, kept his head very still, and fired the ball with nice motion and finish, unlike when hes in a game and not transferring his weight at all, and flicking the ball..

not sure what to think about that..

He really didn't look good at the combine either. He wss very slow with his drops, and there is too much time between when his back foot hits and when the ball comes out.

Mechanics aside though, this is a guy who needs to be taught the position from the ground up. He has to learn to make pre snap reads, coverage reads, protection calls, and learn to do this very quickly. How long do you think that will take considering that his wonderlic score verifies that he isn't a quick thinker?

This is one of my main concerns. In the NFL he wont be able to go at his own pace. If his footwork is sloppy or takes to long to set and square up, then I'm guessing we'll see too many passes sailing or at receivers feet. Actually, I believe we'll see him becoming confused & frequently indecisive, resorting to "manual override" (IE: trying to use his feet by tucking and running). Once that fails--------- hasta la pasta.

I think that's bc he was able to drop back at his own pace..... and b/c he already knew where the ball was going. Let's see how the feet respond in games when he's got to get back & set quicker....... and how they respond when he doesn't know which target they'll be squaring up to.

    whatever the reason
he does not inspire confidence amongst most fans
rightly or wrongly many get the feeling
that they've been there & done that before
& want no part of what they perceive he is about
personally, I'm more concerned about the offensive line

Summary: An extremely talented, dual-threat QB who carried Auburn to a national title, Newton has the arm and athletic talent desired in a rollout, play-action, bootleg vertical passing game and would fit ideally into an offense such as that of the Redskins or Raiders. However, he always will test the rules, be difficult to manage and lacks the intangibles to win the trust of a locker room. Will require a very strong-willed, demanding coach to live up to his potential and avoid the trappings of fame and fortune, but even the greatest taskmaster will not be able to keep away the drama that is still swirling from a stained Heisman Trophy and littered recruiting trail that Newton left in the SEC. Can provide an initial spark, but will quickly be dissected and contained by NFL defensive coordinators, struggle to sustain success and will not prove worthy of an early investment. An overhyped, high-risk, high-reward selection with a glaring bust factor, Newton is sure to be drafted more highly than he should and could foreclose a risk-taking GM's job and taint a locker room.

“Call something at Auburn that’s a little verbal,” Gruden said, obviously knowing the answer to the question. “What would be a little verbal? Any recollection on that?
    Newton: “Um.”
“Gimme something,” Gruden said. “What’s an Auburn play sound like?”
“I mean, you’re putting me on the — on the spot,” Newton said.
Having already proven his point, Gruden then gave Newton a lifeline. “You guys don’t get in the huddle much though, right?” Gruden said.
Newton welcomed that one. “We really don’t,” Newton said. “And our method is ‘simplistic equals fast.’ It’s so simple as far as, you look to the sideline [and] you see 36 on the board. And that’s a play. And we’re off.”

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/04/18/jon-gruden-puts-cam-newton-on-the-spot/

The guy couldn't even call ONE play. ONE! More proof that he was spoon fed the reads and really has no idea what's going on out there on the field. The OC tells him to throw to the guy on the right, he throws to the guy on the right. If he happened to see that the guy was covered he'd take off running.

Newton, IMO, is going to be drafted really high and whichever team drafts him is going to be extremely disappointed.

Nah. Someone will just pull out the race card and talk about how the racist NFL coaches do this so black quarterbacks can't play quarterback in the NFL.

Seriously, yes. He is going to be a disappointment. I'm going to laugh my *** off when he tries to digest Rod Chudzinski's 900 page playbook. Newton isn't as far along as a passer as Vince Young was, and we all see how ****ty Vince Young has been as a quarterback in the NFL.

It may be 900 pages but its probably not more than 45-60 plays.

I think Newton will have trouble remembering three plays, much less 45-60 with each of them being run from different formations. He will never be able to grasp it.

But another Hall of Famer, Jerry Rice, sees things differently. Rice said this morning on ESPN Radio that he believes African-American quarterbacks were discriminated against in the past, but that the league has advanced beyond those days.
“I think the NFL is so much further now,” Rice said. “I don’t think race is a factor.”

“It’s going to boil down to accuracy,” Rice said. “He’s going to have to be able to drop back, plant himself and deliver that football. During his workouts the ball was a little high, all over the place.”

His mechanics were horrible at the combine. Did you see him trying to throw a short out from a five step drop into a specific area. H wasn't even close and that is in shorts. I can only imagine what it would be like when he has to hit a narrow window that is closing. It is all about that drop and he has to learn it because he is no where ready to be that style of QB at this time.

When he isn't being coached on what to say, his mentality shows. IMO, the guy thinks he is God's gift to football. He thinks he is going to come to the NFL and be able to do the same stuff he did at Auburn. IMO, he will be the biggest bust in this draft and will have his GM and Head Coach fired after three years.

I agree 100%. I don't want to even make a 1st round mock b/c I cringe at having to figure out which team takes the bait. I'd rather just stick him in the 4th round as a TE where he belongs. Anything that involves talking or excessive thinking he should probably just pass on. The baggage of his father alone should be enough to do some serious damage. That guy is massively living vicariously though his son.

When Cam started almost talking down to Gruden as if they were intellectually on the same football level, I couldn't help but toss out a few choice words while laughing at him.

Well the thing is, and the idea behind this thread is NOT that Cam Newton (whom I'm neutral on) is a wonderful Qb prospect, it is the attacks were getting absurd glancing at the last couple of replies those are legit criticisms as any Qb should be able to call at least a single play, on demand, when asked.
