Just thought we should start a new thread so folks can differentiate the days..up to mods if they wanna merge.. These tweets are the courtesy and work of MNphinfan...don't thank me. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 39m Kind of foggy, but the Dolphins are practicing outside today. At least it is dry. pic.twitter.com/wLwgCuv7qn Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 38m Find it interesting that Shelley Smith and David Arkin are both working on their snapping as centers. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 37m Sam Brenner and Tyler Larsen are the backup centers behind Pouncey. And Nate Garner is the utility hitter, but Smith & Larkins are emergency Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 36m We're entering week three of Koa Misi as the starting inside linebacker. Dannell Ellerbe is to his left and Philip Wheeler is to his right. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 35m I'm watching a tight end package at features Michael Egnew on the line and Dion Sims as the H-back. Would think those roles would reverse. Chris Perkins @chrisperk · 34m #Dolphins rotating RBs Knowshon Moreno, Lamar Miller & Daniel Thomas w/1st team in drill right now. Interesting. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 34m Jason Trusnik is the 2nd team inside linebacker and Jonathan Freeny is to his left, and Jelani Jenkins is to his right. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 33m Jason Fox is finally working as the second team left tackle. That's the position he played in college at UM. That's where his value is. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 31m Dallas Thomas is entering week 3 of OTAs as the starting left guard. That means he's holding off Billy Turner. But remember, no pads yet. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 31m Brandon Gibson is running pre-practice dummy routes with the starting unit. I have no clue what that means. He hasn't worked with team yet. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 31m Quick observation: Jason Fox has been working as the backup left tackle. Garner was there last week. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 28m This is new: During the team's stretch every player -linemen, defenders - is having the ball thrown to his by trainers and assistants. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 27m Earl Mitchell continues to be paired with Randy Starks on the starting D-line. Not sure if that's due to Jared Odrick's injury or his role. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 26m Odrick again working with trainers Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 26m Jared Odrick is working on the side with a trainer. He hasn't done anything team related this offseason. Not sure the nature of the injury. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 25m Every unit, including the defensive backs, are doing position drills. If a DB drops he does 10 push ups. pic.twitter.com/qUDKmEQ24k Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 23m The quarterbacks are working on their quick hitches. That's clearly a throw Ryan Tannehill should excel at because of his arm. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 22m Jordan Tripp continues to work as the third team inside linebacker. He's paired with Chris McClain, who is to his left, and Derrell Johnson. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 21m Offense tackles and tight ends are working on their tandem blocks. I suspect tight ends will have a very important role in this offense. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 20m Considering how many packages the Dolphins have use tight ends I can envision four making it to the 53 safely, maybe five. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 17m Dallas Thomas is getting work as the first-team LG for the third straight week. He's the leader in the clubhouse. #DolphinsOTAs Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 15m Brandon Gibson has a helmet in his hands. Maybe he's doing some serious work today? Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 14m Dolphins running red zone. Dallas Thomas and Shelley Smith are the guards. Lamar gets the first carry. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 14m Rishard Matthews enters his third week as the starting spot. Brian Hartline is doing team drills for the second week in a row. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 14m Lamar Miller is the #Dolphins' first-team RB. Knowshon Moreno still has work to do. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 14m Wallace beats Finnegan for a touchdown, but can't get his feet in-bounds. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 13m Vernon would have sacked Tannehill during 11-on-11 red Zone, beating Albert. But Tannehill threw to Wallace, who caught out of bounds Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 12m Wake has a free run at Tannehill from LDE. Would have been a hellacious collision in a game. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 13m DE Cameron Wake with a would-be sack on QB Ryan Tannehill. It looks like the #Dolphins mixed up their protection. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 12m No surprise, but Koa Misi is still the MLB. The #Dolphins are riding with their decision. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 12m Nice run by Damien Williams during the red zone work. Great block by Charles Clay. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 11m The Dolphins are really mixing and matching. Knowshon Moreno just took a handoff from Brock Jensen. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 11m Tackle for loss on Lamar Miller run by AJ Francis. High snap didn't help the play develop. Chris Perkins @chrisperk · 11m Correction...Moreno working with 3rd & 4th teamers. 1st & 2nd team on same field, Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 11m Just realized Knowshon Moreno is working with the scrub unit. Ouch James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 11m DE Dion Jordan does a solid job holding the point of attack against #Dolphins rookie RT Ja'Wuan James. Jordan's workouts are paying off. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 8m Brandon Gibson is doing wind sprints. No practice again for Gibson, who is 7 months into ACL rehab. pic.twitter.com/qZPHeU5bcv Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 7m Marcus Thigpen, Lamar Miller and Damian Williams are working as the team's kickoff returners. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 3m Former. Dolphins Keith Byars H-back is here at practice. But he's far from the players. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 3m Believe Brandon Gibson just stepped inside after running wind sprints. He's been rehabbing from a torn patellar since October. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 2m Daniel Thomas appears to be getting second team reps. Dolphins fans might not want to stick a fork in him just yet. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m It is so funny to watch when Brent Grimes gets bored. He's clearly got ADHD. He can't even pretend he can't sit still. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Goal line 11 on 11s. Man's work now Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 1m Sims and Clay were the goal-line tight ends on the first play. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m The Dolphins just used a package that featured Charles Clay, Dion Sims and rookie Harold Hoskins, who actually got the pass from Tannehill. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 38s Lamar Miller just showed good speed getting to the edge. But everyone but @chrisperk knows he can do that. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Tannehill rolls to right and finds Hartline in the back of the end zone on third down but the refs say Hartline is out of bounds. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Good inside run from Knowshon Moreno during. Goal line work. Sets up a 4th and 2. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 2m Daniel Thomas gets nothing on the 4th and 2 run. Insert womp womp sound. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Matt Moore throws a duck on his first pass. No receiver near the ball. Chris Perkins @chrisperk · 1m Defense has drawn two offsides penalties during this goalline drill. No indication on who was offside. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Mike Gillislee with a strong inside run that would have scored. Good block on the draw play. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Orleans Darkwa just scored from the 2, untouched. They are facing the third team D-line, which is clearly being dominated. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 1m I'm liking #Dolphins OC Bill Lazor's scheme so far. A lot of motions, a lot of formations. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 1m Wild, early prediction: Gaitor Hoskins will push Michael Egnew for a roster spot. He's working with the big boys today, with success. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 58s Jason Trusnik with a nice stand up hit on an inside run drill. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 46s But maybe I'm jaded by the Mike Sherman offense I watched all last year. Anything would look like an improvement. We will see. #Dolphins Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Matt Moore scrambles right for a touchdown. I believe Jordan Kovacs would have lit him up, but refs puts his hands up. Chris Perkins @chrisperk · 1m Defense draws pass interference flag. That's three in goalline situation. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 2m Matt Moore's pass to Kyle Miller draws like 4 flags for pass interference. It was a shower of flags. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m These are the Dolphins starting defensive backs. Write it down. No competition. pic.twitter.com/XRdli82xLU Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 47s Jordan Tripp and Jelani Jenkins are paired together in the nickel package. That's intriguing. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 5s #Dolphins RBs better know how to catch this year. There are opportunities there in this offense from what I've seen so far. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 2m Based on what I've seen for 3 weeks now I'm very comfortable with Cortland Finnegan as the starter opposite Grimes. pic.twitter.com/WkVevcCRXb James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 59s Idk if rookie DE Terrence Fede can play (let's see when the pads come on). But he moves pretty well for a player his size. #Dolphins Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 46s I'm on week three of watching these motions from the offense. They are super confusing. Puts a lot of responsibility on the QBs. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 1m Marcus Thigpen, Jarvis Landry, Damian Williams, Matt Hazel and Brent Grimes among #Dolphins players fielding punts today. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 52s For the record, I'm against the thought of CB Brent Grimes doing punt return. Why risk it with one of your top three players? #Dolphins Chris Perkins @chrisperk · 1m Today's punt returners during drill: Landry, Grimes, Damian Williams, Thigpen, Matt Hazel, Rantavious Wooten. Chris Perkins @chrisperk · 40s Those who didn't like Dion Jordan on special teams last year won't like this: He's on punt coverage team right now. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 11s It will be interesting to see if Brock Jensen can REALLY push Pat Devlin. The jury is out. pic.twitter.com/sc5hWyW4jl Chris Perkins @chrisperk · 14s S Michael Thomas just made nice defensive play vs. Mike Wallace in end zone. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 22s Michael Thomas breaks up a Tannehill pass to Wallace during 7-on-7 from the 23. Still red zone stuff. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 35s #Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill misses WR Mike Wallace twice in the end zone. Good coverage both times by the D. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 10s Wallace drops his second pass during 7-on-7s inside the end zone.Throw would have gotten his ribs shattered cause it was between 2 defenders Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 26s DBs are killing the WRs/TEs in 7-on-7s right now. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 18s Good pass breakup by CB Jamar Taylor on TE Charles Clay in the end zone. #DolphinsOTAs Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 18s Jamar Taylor breaks up a pass in the end zone to Charles Clay. Defense is hot today. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 11s Matt Moore is having a Matt Moore -esque practice day. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 6s #Dolphins rookie WR Jarvis Landry makes a nice snatch over the middle. He has a good pair of hands. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · now Jarvis Landry just caught a drag route during 7-on-7 and went up field so quickly I said "WOW" out loud. Chris Perkins @chrisperk 22s Devlin to Wallace for a TD!! Omar Kelly @OmarKelly 10s Pat Devlin just bulleted a TD pass to Mike Wallace, threading the needle. Great throw. Showed some zip. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 1m Rough day for Mike Wallace. Several drops. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 1m Next drop of the day goes to...#Dolphins WR Mike Wallace. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 38s Tannehill just threw a touchdown pass to Charles Clay during red zone 7-on-7. Great pass from Tannehill. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 13s Good TD catch in 7-on-7 by TE Charles Clay. It may be Ryan Tannehill's best throw of the day. #DolphinsOTAs Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 6s Will Davis' deflection make Jarvis Landry drop a catchable ball. You can tell he was trying to jump the route. I need to see his ballhawking Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 1m Armons Binns catches a TD pass on Brent Grimes from Matt Moore. Great play. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 43s Lamar Miller is the starting tailback for the bulk of the work again today. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly · 41s Rishard Matthews with a great 8-yard completion during red zone work, take 2 of team drills. Tannehill on the throw. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley · 13s Spectacular TD catch by Stephen Williams on Grimes. James Walker @JamesWalkerNFL · 10s DB Jimmy Wilson on the blitz and gets right to QB Ryan Tannehill for a would-be sack. #DolphinsOTAs
don't mention the word with the i and ending with the y, we should put a sticky down for this....dont talk about it !!!!
Probably should be re-worded that Finnegan was beaten for a TD but the receiver couldn't get his feet down. It's not a plus for Wallace if he can't finish the play with his feet, but it is probably a minus for Finnegan because the description implies that Wallace should've been able to do it.
I'm liking the Gator Hoskins news. He's a baller. I think we should do whatever we can to keep him on the roster. If we can keep Roberto Wallace for two, we can keep Hoskins for two.
Gator Hoskins is the guy that poses the biggest threat to Michael Egnew. But as a UDFA, I'm not sure that threat is as big as some would make of it. I've been onto the guy as a draft prospect forever, talking about him all year...but he's a UDFA now. They don't enter the process with a lot of street cred. Most are cut, some make the practice squad. If nobody wanted the guy in the draft then there's a good chance nobody wants him off waivers unless A) he makes big plays in preseason, or B) there was a nother team hot after him as a UDFA but Miami outbid for him. The latter doesn't seem to be the case and we'll see on the former.
Hard to get excited about the state of the running game this year... but I guess Moreno stole PT from Ball/Hillman last year once the hitting actually started. And once the health of the QB was actually at stake. I hope Mike is getting all those drops out of the way now!
James Walker@JamesWalkerNFL 1h Dion Jordan with a would-be sack on #Dolphins QB Matt Moore. The D is winning in the trenches today. James Walker@JamesWalkerNFL 1h Cameron Wake with another would-be sack on QB Ryan Tannehill. Two on the day for Wake. The #Dolphins' pass pro is shaky today. James Walker@JamesWalkerNFL 2h Backup LT Jason Fox w/the false start. The #Dolphins' offense is a little sloppy today w/drops, missed protections and two false starts. -------------------- Unstoppable attack on the QB... should be the theme for our defense this year if everything pans out the way it should.
Whatever, something that suggests good players on special teams is a noteworthy risk outside of the realm of theory.
circa 1993, Troy Vincent out for the season on punt return. I'll submit that was one of the reasons why he left Miami a couple of years later, went to the Eagles... made 5 pro bowls there. http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/19...1_troy-vincent-dolphins-defense-frankie-smith
Sehorn is the first off the top of my head. There have been others. But Sehorn's injury was devastating to his career. Special Teamers carry a significantly higher risk of injury. http://www.esquire.com/cm/esquire/data/Dangers-of-the-Game-Draft-Esquire.pdf (page 17) Also, how many plays per injury: It's an unnecessary risk unless the player is special (Percy Harvin etc.)
Cortland Finnegan states that he's been working exclusively on the outside and that Jimmy Wilson has the slot job "locked up".
My concern about Finnegan being on the outside would be him being physically bullied around especially in the end zone. He's not a Brent Grimes. Here's a good example what I'm talking about. You can go ahead and claim that's pass interference but the fact of the matter is the officials are not calling offensive pass interference on that play 9 times out of 10, even with Cortland Finnegan's flop.
It's a good question. For years I've heard people talking about not wanting legit players returning kicks/punts due to risk of injury, but it seems to me returners very rarely get injured on returns. The return injury that most comes to mind was Ted Ginn's in the BCS game and that was in the celebration, not the play itself. Devin Hester has been retruning kicks for 8 years and has never had any serious injuries. Brian Mitchell did it for 12 years or so and hardly ever missed a game. Eric Metcalf was also largely injury free as a returner for a very long time. And you really don't see that many injuries to coverage team guys or retrun blockers either. At least not that stop play or require medical attention on the field.
If that's the case, and I'm not saying you're wrong, why do they keep changing the rules for KO and punts in the name of player safety?
http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/sto...date-broken-leg-tibia-tennessee-titans-return Randall Cobb You can be injured on any given play of course. So the question is, is it worth it? If it is, you play him (Desean Jackson returning a punt because you need a miracle to win the game). If it isn't, you don't.
They obviously think it is an issue and act like it is. And maybe there are alot of coverage guys that get hurt but walk off on their own power and we don't notice the injury. But you rarely see major injuries on returns and almost never see the returner get injured, even though a lot of those guys are small guys under 180 lbs. or so. That's not to say nobody is ever injured on retruns, but it seems to be less frequest than people think/assume.
They aren't trying to eliminate kick returner injuries, they are trying to cut down on high speed collisions with players running full speed at one another causing possible long term brain damages.
ST cautionary tale: Jason Seahorn Problem with OTA's is the offense is more or less cruising, the real problem is once actual padded practices take place the OTA "star' has a very small window to impress or they are relegated.
Of course, if Finnegan this year is the same player he was on the Rams, he won't be much of a factor; and probably will be beat out. I think the Dolphins didn't sign him to be CF2013. And, Dez Bryant is going to be a tough cover for most CBs in the league on that play. When he actually wants to play and is on his game, he's a beast. It remains to be seen what kind of player Finnegan will be this year. Hopefully he and Grimes will add a veteran presence and train the young guys and hopefully they will turn out to have the talent necessary to be competitive.
Bit ironic that Finnegan is shown in a redzone highlight... today, one of the writers tweeted that the Dolphins were running special goal line d packages without any corners. I'm intrigued if we can get other guys with size (Aikens or even Reshad Jones) on the outside in those packages. They are going to man up and just maul people at the LOS.
A couple of interesting tidbits from Finsiders http://www.thefinsiders.com/blog/2014/5-observations-from-week-3-of-otas 2. Quick Hitch: One of the nuances of Bill Lazor‘s offense is that the quarterback must be able not only to make quick decisions with the football, but also to catch and deal with a snap quickly in the shotgun formation. This offense relies on the signal caller to be able to catch the shotgun snap and get the

Joe Philbin looks much more relaxed this year. That could be a good thing. I'm not paying attention to who is getting more reps or running with the first team because at this point it means nothing. This is all about learning and getting into football shape. I do like what I'm hearing about DJ though. My early vote for breakout player. I'm pretty impressed with Cortland Finnegan so far in terms of leadership. The dude has a great attitude
Don't care about who is getting first team reps either. I do like that Miller is a little bigger this year. Have high hopes for him. He's our best shot at a good RB
Typical of Kelly, getting names wrong like he did in his predraft video fiasco. There is no Larkins. It is David Arkin. Geez, you would think a beat writer could get the names right every time, if they take their job seriously.
Troy Vincent got a knee wiped out on a punt return against the Steelers, early in like his 2nd or 3rd season.
Thought of another one. Shawn Wooden covering a kickoff on opening day in his 1st or 2nd season, tore up a knee, and he was a starting safety at the time.
He was a Transition player. He left for one reason alone. Jimmy decided not to match the Eagles offer sheet.
Was where he got the toss on an end around , reverse type of play wasn't it? He would have scored too but one of those plays that made you sick.
