I'm liking the new cd. It isnt Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning but lets be honest, those days are long gone. It is good though, better than St. Anger for sure. It's probably in the Load category, which isnt a bad thing imo. Load had some good songs on it - Until it Sleeps, King Nothing, Hero of the Day etc. I really like The Day That Never Comes, Cyanide, Unforgiven III and Judas Kiss quite a bit. Some of the songs had to grow on me after listening to them a bunch, which shows they probably arent great, but oh well.
Yeah, after all the rumors of this album being heavier and more like Ride the Lightning etc. I have to say I'm disappointed with this song. Still sounds too much like LOAD, which was precisely that. I don't hate the song but its too long, the beginning is kinda lame and takes too long to get going. I'm hoping the next track is a little heavier to start.
With songs like "Unforgiven III," this album looked like Metallica may be swinging into the self-parody stage of their careers. I have been cautious about this album, because aside from the covers album and the symphony album, I've not really liked them for some time. With much trepidation, I picked this up over the weekend. Surprisingly, I like what I'm hearing so far. It's a mixture of the older Metallica stuff with the Load sound as well. It's easily better than either ReLoad or St. Anger, which is a bonus. Still, I can't help but feel like these are B-Sides for their better material over the years. I know that's part of the challenge for a band that's been around for 25+ years, but there's still an opportunity there. Overall though, it's a fan-pleasing album that will please most that listen to it. Solid effort, and a nice return for the band.
