Yesterday , Netflix announced they would be offering streaming of movies and tv programs in Canada this fall. It certainly seems like a no brainer , as the cost is minimal. So , what is the downside? Selection has to be ok at least , right? Do you have to download to view first , or can you just select a show or movie to watch when you want to? Any issues with dependability? Ten dollars a month seems like you can't lose , and certainly knocks our cable prices out of the park. They won't be making the mailing of dvd's available in Canada , so it is just the streaming option. Cheers.
Netflix's content is limited largely to what is already available on DVD. In other words, no current-season TV programming. It is a great service, though; almost any movie you can imagine (except, of course, current releases in theaters) is available either steaming or on disc from Netflix. Well worth the $9.
Thanks for the response. Now for Canada , they are not going to mail out dvd's , it will just be the streaming option. Does that limit the selection, or is where a selection is available in both forms in the U.S.? I take it , if you are a movie fan and want to watch selections from years ago you may have perhaps hit the motherlode. Overlooked gems , smaller films etc. For tv series/shows , is it basically from last season and previous seasons then? I understand that you could not watch current episodes of The Office , say , but you could watch shows from previous seasons then? Or is it hit and miss with shows , dependent if they hold the rights to distribute? Can't really see a down side for 10 dollars , 2 good movies a month and you are ahead. No having to return movies , incredible selection right from home ... 30 below in January , that makes tons of sense to me !
If it is only streaming the selection is significantly smaller, but are constantly adding new movies. I've had it for a few months now and am starting to hit a wall finding movies available to stream.. but I went through a lot. It's worth a shot especially if you're not locked into a long term contract
I'm a big fan of movies, so yeah, Netflix is THE motherlode. Streaming is limited compared to their inventory as a whole. Still their inventory is more than you'd watch in years, as long as you're flexible and patient. TV programs are limited largely to what's been released on DVD, but now they're even able to stream some that haven't been released yet; no current seasons though. But Hulu does a good job with that.
Not true! Both Spartacus and Crash were streaming on Netflix just after they aired on TV. I assume there's a few more too
Heroes was another show that was streaming while the season was still being shown on TV. You could even watch this past season on it before the DVDs come out in August.
netflix is the bees knees especially if you are like me and into independent or older movies. Its a little frustrating when there are movies you can't stream but to me its a minor thing especially since they are constantly adding new movies anyways.
Well netflix has arrived in Canada this week. Set up the account , browsed through it , rated a bunch of movies and it seems to be a huge bargain for $7.99 Canadian. Waiting for the Wii disc so I can watch on the big screen , but did watch the first show of Rescue Me , which I only started to watch after a few seasons , so that was cool. Seems like a lot of hidden gems may be available , plus some great classics like Dr. Strangelove , Memento etc. I saw today that they also announced a deal with NBC for more shows . We should have a netflix should watch list perhaps?
