Well i went out and bought Modern Warfare 2, put the disc in, played for a little bit, it froze. i had to restart my ps3, once i restarted it, the game wouldnt start. told me there was an error starting the disc. kept saying that error. so i took the game back and got another one. SAME THING happened with the new one. so to make sure it just wasnt 2 bad games, i put another game in there and then that one did the same thing. i did some searching and it seems like i need to send it back to ps3 to get something fixed in it, problem is, im out of warranty...

    wtf!!!!

Likely the laser, the Blu-Ray discs are always the first to go it happened to me. I can try and help you through it if you want to send a PM. Likely too it could be your Blu-Ray drive's arms that accept the disc are stuck but if DVDs work then it is probably the laser. If you are under warranty send it back for a fix but if not you'll need to open it and as Mor said its pretty easy...I did it successfully.

Maynard did this a couple months ago and I believe it worked.

Mine just crapped out as well. Way out of warranty. The problem with mine is it's just not reading games. I put one in today, it read the game, I selected it, and then the screen went blank. Now after restarting, I can't get any PS3 game to load. Is this something I can fix myself? Can somebody point me to a good set of directions? Otherwise I'll be in official video game retirement. So sick of buying these overpriced systems that are designed to fail.

I can send you the same details I used to fix my PS3 laser...which this sounds like your problem as well.

I'll shoot you and Nappy a PM within the next day.

Looks like I spoke too soon. :pity: Game loaded and it crapped out again right as I was getting ready to start a new file on the Batman game. Now it's not recognizing discs again. I guess I can try cleaning it more, but if you have any other hints that might be a more permanent fix, I'm all ears!

    Thanks in advance!

Btw king, that would be awesome. I don't have a computer so I'm on my phone, for whatever reason that video posted will not work on a mobile phone..

I caved and bought a new one. It was tough to decline Sony's gracious offer to send me a refurbished 40GB model for $150 after the one I have now broke down twice in 2 years but I figured I'd pay $100 more and get the extra 80GB, a new machine, new warranty, and not have to wait 2 weeks for it to show up.

I had an unopened extra controller my mom gave me as a gift which I was able to take back which is why I only had to pay an extra $100 as opposed to $150.

Sking, thanks for the PM, definitely still interested in fixing the old one.

No problem Monst and I sent more info.

Also Sony really needs to get their heads out of the sand and fix their warranty like MS did. Older PS3 models like original 20 GB and 60 GB models along with the 80GB BC model and the first 40GB model are really having a lot of problems. The two biggest being the YLOD or them having a laser die.

Are these problems only on older systems, or will the one I bought on black friday have these problems as well?

Most I've seen are on older systems...I am guessing you even have the Slim so you should definitely be fine.

Also don't get the impression that PS3s are unreliable because they are quite reliable indeed. However its really Sony's warranty that is the problem as it leaves early PS3 adopters out in the cold with a $150 fee to get the PS3 fixed. Its not a huge RROD type problem for early PS3s but just a concern that should be addressed.

The same thing just happened to my sister's boyfriends PS3. Won't recognise discs anymore. His is the old 40GB model but he paid for extended warranty from the shop and now thinks he might be getting it swapped for a 250GB model.
