I'm writing this draft scenario prior to free agency so there is no doubt that this will change a million times by April but my wife is watching "The Bachelor" and I need to kill some time. I'm have an extreme confidence that two of the following four players will be Dolphins... *Mike Wallace *Greg Jennings *Brian Hartline *Dwayne Bowe Due to this I have serious doubt that the Dolphins will draft a receiver early come April. Round 1-Sharrif Floyd-DT-Florida Selecting a defensive tackle will not excite the fan base but the writing is on the wall. Randy Starks is an unrestricted free agent, Paul Soliai has one year left on his deal, and trade rumors are surrounding Jared Odrick. Round 2-Alex Okafor-DE-Texas The Dolphins need an every down defensive end to cause havoc opposite of Cameron Wake. Jared Odrick with either be moved inside to defensive tackle or will be sent away for even more draft picks and if you combine that with the fact that Olvier Vernon is raw and more of a situational player then the selection of defensive end makes sense. Round 2-Travis Kelce-TE-Cincinnati Tight end is a major need and Kelce is one of the fastest rising players in the draft. Kelce is a good athlete, above average blocker, and reliable target that will pay huge dividends in the Dolphins' passing attack. Round 3-Brennan Williams-OT-North Carolina Jake Long is a free agent seeking a huge pay day and the Dolphins aren't going to want to pay. Williams surely looks the part when it comes to right tackle and if it wasn't for an injury we are looking at a top 50 draft selection. Round 3-Gavin Escobar-TE-San Diego State Teams that have double dipped when it comes to the tight end position have seen the move pay huge dividends such as the Ravens (Pitta/Dickson) and the Patriots (Gronkowski/Hernandez). The Dolphins would be wise to learn from the teams that know how to draft. Round 4-Nickell Robey-CB-USC The Dolphins obviously need help at corner with Sean Smith looking like he is done as a Dolphin. Robey is flying completely under the radar. Ckparrothead wrote a nice write up on him that I suggest you check out. Round 5-Aaron Mellette-WR-Elon The Dolphins need a receiver with size and the small school standout stained at 6"4 and could be an absolute steal. Round 7-Jeff Baca-G-UCLA The Dolphins need offensive line depth in a big way. Round 7-Ty Powell-LB-Harding Powell is raw as a sushi grade of tuna but there is tremendous upside that Dolphins will have a shot to develop.
Like the Kelce Escobar combo at TE, but unless we sign Wallace we would still lack that vertical threat.
Id rather resign starks then spend #12 on a DT. Starks is a good interior rusher and hes good vs the run. Top half of the first round picks are picks I absolutely hate spending on non premium positions (like DT) or positions where we have a very good player like Starks. If we lose starks I wouldnt be upset if we traded down a bit and made this pick but I dont want Floyd there. I wouldnt be happy with that draft at all which isnt a knock on your effort....Im just not a fan of the way that shakes out. Though i do hope we land Bowe and Wallace in FA.
I was kicking around a scenario like this but you beat me to it. Like others I don't like the idea of investing the 1st two picks on the D-Line. Based on your draft I have to assume you think Martin will be our starting LT? That possibility scares me because I watched every snap of his at LT after Long went down and felt that if he were being counted on for that job in '13, it was gonna be another long, ugly season.
I was wondering the same thing but I think he's referring to Ansah. Floyd is a stud and top 5 talent. Even if it's not a position of need it's hard calling him a bad pick at 12
Sharrif Floyd is a top 3-5 player in this draft. That's a fact. The first four teams on the board could take him. Without even a second thought.
Why hasn't Floyd been talked about going higher? I haven't seen him in the top 10. Mayock seems to be the first person I've seen putting him #1 among DT. Did he often get doubled teamed in college? I know Star was doubled teamed all the time.
He's been talked about like that for a while. Plus, unless you're a regional scout, a lot of evaluators only see these kids properly on tape for the first time from February onwards.
Like taking a lineman in general? Agree, Long walks our eunuch of a GM will take a OT, long stays we take a DT or do the usual "puppy pees on tummy" run away from elite talent.
I'd take that bet, but two new GM's in Philly and Jax may do exactly that, otherwise a GM who takes a DT that highly really should fire themselves and save the fanbase the bother or calling for their firing two yr hence At what point does it sink in that the league has changed and DT's are not worth half as much as they used to be? Nah, 50 passes a game, draft a DT, of course, makes perfect sense.
Well, I know he's getting a lot of love, and I'm tired of watching their games, but I think Sheldon Richardson is the better football player..
