Im moving to Orlando next month. Im likely going to Tallahassee for a few weeks prior, so it might end up being December before I can get settled in to Orlando, but I need to know some nice places to live in Orlando. Not to expensive, but not the hood. I know Manatee County like the back of my hand, so I know the right places to live, and the wrong. But I know absolutely nothing at all about Orlando, where a lot of the crime is, where the best deals are in apartments in the best areas, etc. Im looking for a 1 BR at this point. any help would be appreciated.
I'm not very familiar with the area, but I remember there is a road that goes through downtown and towards a residential area. It's one of the main streets, I forget the name of it. But there are a lot of banks, supermarkets, etc and it looked like a decent street. I wish I could be more help. If you go to Orlando, drive through downtown and you will find the street/junction that I'm talking about. Good luck.
Just outside Orlando city is nice. Oviedo is real nice/safe. It's right next to UCF. Anywhere east of the city is pretty good. Stay away from Pine Hills (Crime Hills) area or the Universal/Disney area's. ($$$$)
I would look in the Lake Mary / Longwood area. Lake Mary is a bit more expensive but Longwood is a bit cheaper and still pretty nice. I've lived in both areas and I've had zero issues with anybody and anyone stealing my stuff - wish you the best with that by the way. I don't know the prices in Longwood so you will have to check that out but I've got several family that lives in the more expensive areas of Longwood as well as the cheaper one and they've had no issues with crime. Just don't go to Apopka. I've lived there and whilst it may look nice, some weird stuff happens there. I've had about four robbers at once try to break into my house in an awkward way, by ringing the doorbell at mid night and trying to lure me into opening the door. It was a big WTF but still dangerous.
Haha @ Pine Hills. I remember that place. People having huge stashes of drugs in their walls so cops would come, tear down the wall in the home and find the whole wall being full of weed, cocaine, etc.
I grew up in Pine Hills on Drexel Ave. When we moved there, there were only 6 houses on my street and everyone knew each other. Years later, I went to Meadowbrook the first year it opened. Of course, at that time, color television sets were a rarity and the crime rate was confined to me and my best friend stealing tangelos off of our neighbor's tree.
Winter Park's pretty nice if you can afford it. Altamonte Springs is safe. Lake Mary & Sanford are cool too. The closer you get to Disney, the crazier the traffic situation gets. In the mornings and late afternoons, I-4 can make you insane downtown. Good luck man.
I'm considering a move up that way too if anyone else has any more advice. I didn't realize how crime ridden orlando has gotten. But then again I lived all over broward and palm beach counties and I neveer thought orlando would ever be as bad as some hoods are down here.
My brother lived there for a while, rented a beautiful, custom 4 BR home for like $1250 a month......this was like 3 years ago when prices were actually higher. Here in Palm Beach county, $1250 barely gets you outta the ghetto But yeah, like others have said, look at surrounding areas of Orlando......I do know it's cheaper up there than it is in "south" Florida.
As Jay said, Lake Mary, Longwood, Altamonte Springs and Winter Springs are all nice areas. Lake Mary is a bit more expensive than the other three but you can still find pretty good deals. I would explore those four areas first. I've lived all my life (actually from 4 to prsesent) in those four areas and have had zero issues.
I'm a UCF student and there are some really really nice family homes/townhomes in the area. Off of Colonial Dr. and Avalon Park those places look very nice and they are just far enough away from UCF so that not many students are in the area. Like gunn34 said...Oveido is a fantastic area. Hope this helps a bit!
Orlando's not bad, it's just dull. One thing I've always disliked about Orlando is that unless you are an individual who likes to club or party a lot, you have pretty much nothing to do. All areas are the same, just different prices. Me, I don't like to go clubbing and if I party, it's usually with my friends from Bosnia. There are a lot of American parties here but a lot of them involve drugs lol and I don't go there, even though all my friends are drug users and/or addicts from school.
Came across this and thought I'd pass it along to you Nappy and Fnsane. Best Places to Live: Top 100 Also, just the Wiki's. Altamonte Springs Winter Springs Lake Mary - Rated by Money magazine as the #4 best place to live in America in the August 2007 issue. Longwood
Samething everyone else has said here. Lake Mary Altamonte Springs Longwood I almost moved up there a few years ago and scouted the area pretty well and those were the three I liked. I almost moved into Lake Mary. Thing is Lake Mary is out on the fringes. So, you will have to drive awhile if you want to get to your job in Orlando. Unless you get a job up there. Also, I remember that except for I-4 and HWY 192, everything else up there makes you pay tolls so becareful were you go and always have cash on you in case you get stuck on a road that requires a toll.
Is he made of $$$? Celebration is nice for 40 somethings. The dude is 23. I doubt he wants to live in The Truman Show. Metro West is a crime haven. So is Ocoee and Crime Hills. Where are you looking to work/ go to school? That could help alot with suggestions.
yeah....NO. check out todays headlines: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/crime/orl-bk-good-samaritan-accused-rape-102909,0,1820239.story I am an Orlando native. I grew up in the Pine Hills area and have seen it go from a nice neighborhood to what it is now. I would suggest living in Seminole County, preferably Longwood, Oviedo, WInter Springs Of course it all depends on where you will be working.
how much are you looking to spend on the apartment? Depending on that I could give you a lot better of an idea of what places to look into.
I leave tomorrow for tallahassee for 2 weeks to a month. Then on to orlando.....I just left my moms house...saying bye to my brother is the hardest thing I've ever had to do before. I'm not sure I'm making the right decision...at all now.
I lived in Apopka right on the Seminole County line. Nice area there, look up Barrington on 436. They were decent apartments depending on what you're looking for. I lived in Kissimmee, Orlando, and other surrounding areas. Stay away from Kissimmee, I moved there first then quickly knew it was probably not the best area. I lived off of Oak Ridge when I was going to school, the price was ok but it was **** to live in. My favorite area was Apopka close to Seminole county line. If you're going to school try looking at places near UCF. You could room with people there or share a house around the area. I'd live near Alafaya and University. Plenty of people your age and you'd probably have a good time in that area.
