I just think in general the COD games do not do a good job of making you feel immersed in the story while you play. It seems like I'm always just playing random stages of a game with only a very vague idea of what's going on in the storyline. As much as I love the overall Black Ops experience, it's much of the same. I'm going back and playing through some games like Gears of War, Halo, even the Resistance fall of Man games etc. and those are games that keep you involved in the story. Games that make you look forward to the cut scenes, not dread them.

I haven't figured out if I'm getting Sunday Ticket this year or not (well if there's football first ). With ATDHE being taken down. might have to get it. I've had it the last oh... 5 or 6 years? I guess I will see how free agency goes first.

IGN has a video interview with Sledgehammer Games and asks about the extent of their involvement with MW3's development.

The Sledgehammer rep says that collaborating with Infinity Ward meant that they could generate a bunch of new ideas. Says there'll be "new and exciting" stuff in MW3. The single player campaign will have larger set pieces than MW2.

Honestly the worst storyline I have ever seen in a big budget game.

Russia gets a hold of a downed satellite and with the parts hack our entire defense grid so we somehow miss an entire invading army. And no other nation in the world (which all have satilites) bothered calling and saying "Hey bro, did you know all of Russia is headed your way?"

And then we nuke the east coast. Just for the hell of it. Pretty sure the storyline was written by a Mini Michael Bay, who had ADD and had been kept locked up in a room with nothing but sugar sticks and Mountain Dew for a week.

I dont expect the storyline of MW3 to be much more believable but maybe then can at least avoid making you spend half the game killing innocent civilians and US servicemen.

The point of recovering the satellite's ACS module was to prevent the cryptographic keys to all of the US' spy satellites to be cracked. When the ACS module was hacked, Russia got backdoor access to the entire US spy satellite system and could do what they want with them, including apparently feeding looped footage to disguise their military movements. It's impossible, but internally consistent with the plot, so you only need suspend your disbelief as to the ease with which Russia jacked the US' feeds.

As for the rest of the world, they were pissed at the US for supposedly being behind the terrorist attack on the Moscow airport, so they're currently in rabid anti-American mode and feel that the US deserves what it gets. It's a fictional adaptation of the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan.

The east coast wasn't nuked. The nuke was programmed to detonate in the atmosphere to generate an EMP to disable all electronically controlled devices, like military equipment. The battle of DC ended a few hours after. It worked.

There's a potential plot hole in MW3, where military hardware in NYC is perfectly functional. This might be written off as a function of NYC being out of range, or the NYC playable segments might occur before the EMP.

The plot was written by the guy who writes NCIS. And if you're familiar with NCIS, you'll know it plays fast and loose with technology and the military but winds up being entertaining anyway.

Bad writing is featured in Gears of War, where characters who are cliches try to pretend that they aren't cliches.

IW bringing in a group of CoD glitchers to test multiplayer for bugs and issues. This was done for MW2 and Black Ops, the difference being they came in at the very end, leaving little time to come up with fixes before launch. This time they're coming months out.

The bolded is the part I have trouble with. I understood the storyline and why they said it worked, I just found it absolutely preposterous.
Here is the problem, no way way in hell would have Russia beleived we were behind that attack, and even if they did they would not have invaded over. Certain nations that already hate us would have taken it at face value but most of our allies would have believed us when we said we had nothing to do with it and even if they were dubious they still would have warned us rather then risking WW3
A nuke rigged for airburst is still a nuke, and the effects can be even worse then a ground detonation. With a ground hit your radiation stays (mostly) around the site of the impact while an air detonation releases all the radiation in the which is then carried in a huge radioactive cloud strong enough to kill and cause health defects for a very, very long time. Everyone that was in or near DC would be dead from the radiation, as well as anyone who was downwind. They wouldn't die right away, but they would die, and horribly. Those who were not in DC but just close enough would not die.... Just have all kinds of health issues and be unable to have kids due to the health defects.

One of the great examples of the dream world the writers for MW2 lived in was that after the nuke went off they gave a number of how many people died as a result, and its an absurd number, just several thousand IIRC. Far less then the population of DC, all of whom would have died, along with all the Russians and US servicemen in the area. Not to mention anyone downwind would have died and those on the edges would have had horrible health defects and been unable to have children due to fears of health defects. The reason the world fears using Nukes is that the results are horrible, and not easy to control, particularly with air burst. Depending on how the wind was blowing that air burst could take out about half of the east coast. DC, then up the coast all the way to NY and then into Canada. Half the coast, either dead within a day or so..... Or taking longer to die from severe radiation poisoning, which is a pretty horrific way to die.
Overall the bolded is what I had a huge problem with. I mean I get it, this is a game, but come on. This is a franchise that has built its name on "Realistic Warfare" and MW1 was one of the best, most realistic campaigns I have ever played. It was believable, and proved you can write a combat game that is fun and entertaining while still being believable.

The story of MW2 was so far outside of the realm of possibility it made my brain hurt. I can forgive some exaggerations and small details but when your entire story is written by someone who CLEARLY has no idea about the subject mater he is writing about it bugs the heck out of me. And the thing that makes it unforgivable to me is that there is no excuse for it. This was a big budget game, if they had wanted to bring in former military advisers to tell them how things work in reality and help them write a story that could actually happen then they could have.

IMO its a dumb and downright lazy way to make a game. At least take enough pride in what you do to write a game that has some basis in reality rather then just writing whatever crap pops into your head without bothering to check and see whether its remotely possible.

I am looking forward to MW3 for the multi player but I am expecting the campaign to be horrible. My only solace is that I dont think it can possibly be worse then MW2. If it is I may just break the disk and walk away.

Everything about Call of Duty is preposterous. It's been that way since the very first game. It's Hollywood war. Recall CoD4's AC-130 mission: there is no way in hell an AC-130 could a. have been deployed that fast b. across multiple borders c. that deep into Russia. Impossible. But there it is in the game.

Remember, the Russia in MW2 is not our world's Russia. The Ultranationalists from MW1 won their fictional civil war. They were itching to attack and just needed a pretext.

I'm not disputing this, I'm simply saying that the primary effect as intended by the plot is an EMP. Again, Hollywood war.

Actually, no one died from the nuke. The casualty figures given prior to the EMP were projections, while the actual number of wounded/dead were from combat. The nuke didn't hit anywhere, so in the MW2verse, it didn't kill anyone.

What? CoD4/MW1 was one of the least plausible and realistic military games ever, nor does it market itself as realistic warfare. Everything about CoD is absurd, from the AI to the set pieces to the lack of tactics to the missions to the lack of bullet physics. Realistic warfare looks like the ArmA games. The Medal of Honor relaunch is also somewhat plausible though greatly simplified for the video game format.

Call of Duty has never been predicated on an accurate recreation of the military, its doctrine, or its capabilities. Bringing in military advisors would result in them quitting due to the outlandish nature of the franchise. Games with military advisors look like Medal of Honor and Brothers in Arms. Hell, Brothers in Arms actually uses satellite data, real WW2 sitreps, and maps from 1944. CoD just drops you somewhere and tells you to shoot the infinitely respawning bad guys with your magic gun that can fire bullets that aren't affected by gravity.

Given CoD's popularity, people like dumb and lazy games.

Dont agree about MW1, its been a long time since I played it but it was not nearly as outlandish as MW2.
Given the amount of dumb and lazy people I guess that should not surprise me.

The bottom line is, the CoD franchise has created a fun and extremely addictive multiplayer experience that isn't going away anytime soon, so the campaigns don't need to be good. I expect MW3 to be as terrible as the last one. I'll still buy it though. And I'll probably still play the awful campaign and complain about it here or elsewhere.

Yes, it absolutely is. (I don't think it's nearly as fun as Team Fortress 2 or the multiplayer modes from Quake 2, but that's another topic.) The big point here is that CoD is in no way realistic and hasn't been since the very first game.

Making the multi-player more like MW1 and less like MW2 can only be a good thing. MW2 was a camp/kill streak fest. Less kill streaks or toned down kill streaks is a good thing. I like how Black Ops used the kill streaks although, I still think they are over powered and make people camp. Not having the kills "stack" while in kill streak mode was a great addition.

It's funny that they seem to be going back to how Modern Warfare 1 did it with multi-player. I don't know why they ever got away from it to be honest.

All I want from the game is weapon balance, something I know will never happen. A light machine gun, with a bigger/heavier cartridge should do more damage. There should not be any "must use" weapons in the game. There should be weapons based on situations and style of play. In "World at War" everyone used the MP-40, it enabled mobility, had the best non sniper rifle killing power and had insane range. In what universe does a sub-machine gun, with a 9MM cartridge and a relatively low fire rate have more stopping power than a MG-42, that is still considered one of the best machine guns ever made. The MG-42 has a higher rate of fire, is more accurate and has a much bigger cartridge but in Call of Duty land it is a rubbish gun and the MP-40 is a God amongst weapons.

If I'm using a light or heavy machine gun I should be penalized by mobility and long reload times. I should not be penalized by those things AND accuracy AND stopping power.

I really like the multi-player and I'm not asking for a "sim". What I would like is simple things like I listed above. The best gun in the game should under no circumstance be a sub-machine gun unless it is a close contact map. IF I'm playing like I usually do (perimeter, getting kills at longer range) I should be able to do lots of damage with an assault rifle or a light/heavy machine gun. I should not have to worry about someone shooting me from across the map with a sub-machine gun that uses a tiny bullet.

For what it's worth, in their lawsuit, Activision alleges that West and Zampella (the IW heads who left to start Respawn with EA) intentionally sabotaged MW2.

Machine guns trading accuracy for ammo count and rate of fire is the correct path, IMO. You simply are not going to be as accurate with a heavy, full-auto gun meant to be mounted than you will with an assault rifle. No way around that.

The good news is that competition provided by BF3 will make both games better.
