http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...es-out-dolphins-situation-as-bad-fit/related/ As a Miami fan since the late 70's (still waiting to see a Super Bowl win) I was always enamored with their class and great reputation....so many Dolphin fans all over the country. The past several years have been bad due to the lack of playoff appearances and each December being more concerned about draft position instead of playoff seeding....but the amount of bad press (which I know the media loves) is beyond disappointing... Trouble landing our first, second, etc...coaching options Trouble landing our first, second, etc...GM options The bullying.... I know winning cures a lot of ills....but I wonder what else....I guess Ross and the leadership have to take it all in stride....
That's a hot load of trash by that coach. He has absolutely no ****ing clue what's going on inside the Dolphins locker-room to be able to say something like that, other than a mental picture fabricated using building blocks supplied by the national media. This whole story with Sam reeks of publicity stunt. Moreso when there are reports that this kid being gay was widely known by his team, coaches and plenty of NFL and media figures. I've no sympathy for people who try to use something as important as gay rights for their own personal gain. If the kid himself had nothing to do with this, then I apologize, but it looks fishy to me and comments like his coach's just get me upset.
agree....which I why I posted. I agree the coach has no clue what goes on in the Miami locker room and a large majority of what is reported by the media is reported by people that also have no idea! My point is I am tired of all of it. Lets just win games and get some positive stuff going....
And there's the problem with perception. I'm quite sure every NFL locker room is vulgar. But because Miami's was put in the spotlight, now suddenly they are the worse place a guy like Mike Sam could go. This was the first thing I thought about when I heard the announcement. Everyone in the media would be jumping over themselves to point out how the Dolphins would be the worst spot for him. Didn't expect it from a coach though.
I don't understand how the coach's statement would be even slightly controversial. I know we're all dealing with an incomplete picture, but does it look--even a little bit--like the coaches have a handle on the relationships within the locker room? The Dolphins look like a bad fit for football reasons as well, FWIW.
Bullcrap. The entire Martin debacle is an example of a bad apple (Martin) flipping his sh*t and bringing down a fellow player and the entire organization. Have you bothered to keep up with the story after the initial hysteria?
What the hell are you talking about? What reeks of a publicity stunt? Of course his teamates knew he was gay, he told them. And if you are going to live an out lifestyle, as he apparently has decided to do, you might as well tell people since they're goign to find out at some point anyway. I just don't udnerstand this post at all. Who is looking for sympathy? None of this makes any sense.
If everyone that needed to know about it, already knew about it, then why make all this fuzz? We don't need every gay person to make a press conference to announce the world they are gay. If his friends, family, team mates, coaches, and plenty of NFL people already knew, then the motives for all this publicity are, at least to me, a little dubious.
You've got to be kidding me. Eventually media will find out about it and the story will break. And everybody should be allowed to live their life openly. Plus, if Sam's coming out and succeeding helps another kid going through the same situation then it is all worth it. The whole notion of "why do they have to announce it" is pretty homophobic
I disagree with Sumlit, but I can't help but wonder if part of this was a PR stunt to help his draft stock. It's not like the kid was a day 1 or even day 2 prospect. This not only could help him get drafted earlier by a team looking to be seen as innovative and forward thinking, but can also secure some lucrative PR deals. I have no problem if those issues factored in the decision, nor do I care why he chose to come out now. I applaud his efforts and I hope he can help start a trend in sports. I also hope he is rewarded for his bravery financially.
Plenty of media knew about it buddy. I heard in the radio this morning that a Dolphin beat writer found out about it during one of the games for draft eligible players. If a Dolphins beat writer knew about it, then plenty of other media did. Nobody cared. It is only a huge story because the player himself decided to make it a huge story. He clearly lives his life openly, as all the people that are important to him know about it. He didn't really come out, all the people close to him already knew, he just decided the entire country should know about his life. My comment has absolutely nothing to do with homophobia, and your mere mention and accusation is not only insulting, but it is also ridiculous.
Michael Sam won't even be drafted. Kerry Rhodes was the #2 free agent safety in 2013. Rhodes was always at the top of the rankings for years, and rightfully so, he was tremendous athlete and a very smart football player. Rumors came out about him. Rumors he denied. The end result: Nobody hired him. He didn't even get any offers as the year went on and other guys ranked way down pole got jobs on teams that had injuries. If Kerry Rhodes, a proven commodity, can't get a job when he was attempting to keep it on down low, I don't know if Sam is getting drafted by any NFL team. If he were a great prospect things might be different, but he isn't even a top prospect.
Of course I'm being serious. Why is everyone trying to make this about homophobia? I have zero problem with him being gay. He obviously has no problems with being gay, since everyone in his life was aware and he is comfortable with it. Why should he care or feel the need to let the entire country know, when he is comfortable with himself, and the people around him that he cares about, know and are also comfortable with himself. I don't really care either way. My reaction to it was "Whatever, who cares" However I do wonder why he is calling all this attention to himself.
Of course they cared. Dave Hyde is the guy you are referring to and he said he heard about it when rumors started flowing that Sam was going to come out. Just because Dave Hyde and some others had the dignity and class not to out him doesn't mean everybody would, and you know full well that it would have happened eventually. And your comment is homophobic. You may not realize it or mean it, but it is. Essentialy what you're saying is that Michael Sam should keep a major part of his life secret, or at least not bother you with it. Then you dismiss his announcement as a PR stunt without even acknowledging how a football player living and working openly might not just help other football players (that undoubtedly exist) but also other people who are struggling. By your logic, Magic Johnson should have kept the fact that he has AIDS secret. It was certainly embaressing for him. Yet he used his celebrity to try and educate and help other people. Just like Michael Sam is doing now. And yes, in a few years after other guys have come out you'll stop hearing about it, because by then people truly won't care or be interested. They are now because nobody has been open in the NFL before.
Coach is doing his player a huge disservice with his ignorance. Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 4
The Martin/Incognito drama was a bad look for us, plain and simple. I don't know that our locker room would be any worse than anyplace else, but to an outsider, and someone concerned with Sam's safety, I can certainly understand the sentiment
How is my comment homophobic? That's absurd. And why do you keep using the word "secret" when nothing about this was secret. People in his life knew about it. A lot of people not in his life also knew about it. This was most definitely not a secret. "Essentialy what you're saying is that Michael Sam should keep a major part of his life secret..." this was not only not what I said, but it also untrue as that major part of his life was not a secret. The extent to which he went to have everyone in the country know about it is what I question. And btw, I am not saying it is definitely a PR stunt, I am only saying that it strikes me as having ulterior motives.
The guy is running around shirtless in gay clubs. Not sure how much of a secret they were trying to keep it.
2 players on our O-Line....2 ex players by the way...thank **** are pretty much responsible for our media woes and Tannehill getting a serious kicking. That's fact. No other player or players on the Phins roster have not come close to those a** clowns making our team look like crap. If anybody has any doubts then look at our weaknesses and wants for the Draft or FA. Its a meltdown called the OFFENSIVE LINE.We even have our Pro Bowl Centre being projected at Guard because its so bad.
best not to comment. You might get tagged as homophobic. Personally.... I couldn't care less if he was gay, from Mars or Cloned from my sister as long as he/she can block. My POV......ppl need to grow up and realise its the 21st Century. I couldn't care less. Its about being a Dolphin player and winning the big one. I couldnt give a **** what his love life is. Fact!! Ppl need to grow up and accept matters that don't concern them in the general way of their day to day life. Message ends. Hmmpth!
Wow... First I apologize to all for this post being a 'gay'/coming out issue....my goal was to talk about my disappointment with negative press/comments about our Miami Dolphins...it happened to be attached to comments about Michael Sam. For clarification, he came out at the advice of friends at the senior bowl due to comments people were making about him and his sexuality and he came out to his parents a few days ago, prior to the interview. Not sure what an 'out lifestyle is'. My interpretation is that he wants to focus on football and he is not looking for sympathy (which your accusation that he would need sympathy because of his sexuality is puzzling). As far as his talent....he was the co-defensive player of the year in arguably the best conference in the nation...he has the ability to play in the NFL.
Not to jump in mid stream... but there is a big difference between keeping something secret, and not making an announcement. If he had gone on with his life, went out on dates with guys, and if ever asked if he was gay or not answered honestly... that's not keeping it a secret. And you can do that without an announcement. Of course... making a national annoucement before the draft puts pressure on the league to make sure he gets drafted and isn't shunned since his talent appears to be league worthy...
But then you don't own the story, and are forced to make a decision whether or not come out on somebody else's terms. That's wrong. And the announcement is important. First, because it's time the NFL got over this, but also because Sam being out and succeeding and being accepted will be an inspiration to other gay kids who are struggling. That is far more important than whether or not some straight guys don't get why he needs to bother everybody with his gayness
And you aren't "forced to come out" if you're already openly gay, going on dates with guys in public, going to gay bars, etc. If you're doing that... esp as a person who is in some national spotlight as an NFL player... you're already out at that point, lol.
We're talking about semantics. And I don't know why you would discount the societal importance of the announcement.
Then someone breaks the story and they own the story. it is not his fault that being gay is important to people and a news story.
I started a saying here in Hawai'i, "I'm not afraid of sharks, I just don't want to get eaten by one"...Is this guy like "Golden Gate Bridge" gay, marshmallow mouth and all? I mean, I don't want our wide receivers living in fear...
Does anyone know the question that triggered this response? I see that Andrew Abrahamsonsonsonson was the interviewer and he is a local media guy. Any chance he asked SPECIFICALLY about Miami as a landing spot for Sam? I ask this because, if the question was close ended like that, it would make sense for the interviewee to answer specifically about Miami. We need the context of the conversation prior to railroading this coach.
