The 18th-ranked run defense went downhill (from seventh-ranked) after nose tackle Jason Ferguson suffered a season-ending quadriceps injury in Game 10. It was also hurt by myriad injuries to middle linebacker Channing Crowder, who finished with 51 tackles — less than half his 114 total in '08.

    TEAM NEEDS
Wide receiver: Ted Ginn Jr. regressed in his third season and proved he will never be a playmaking receiver by adding bad hands to poor route running and a fear of contact. Ginn had a bushel of drops and one TD catch. No Dolphins receiver had more than three TDs.

MEDICAL WATCH: Although not yet official, it's obvious that linebacker Jason Taylor and running back Ricky Williams both will need shoulder surgeries. Guard Justin Smiley once again will need shoulder surgery and his knee wasn't in good shape following the season finale. Right tackle Vernon Carey will undergo knee surgery and his balky back may also need some work. Cornerback Vontae Davis injured his wrist in the season finale, but no word yet on the gravity of the injury. Linebacker Channing Crowder is destined for foot and shoulder surgery, while linebacker Joey Porter will certainly get his ailing knee scoped at the very least.
