That's it, I'm pretty sure. Basically a statement that Coyle would prefer to keep him at defensive end.

The rest of it is basically following Armando Salguero down the rabbit hole.

He probably took more snaps as a defensive tackle all things considered.

It's a little misleading to say they don't think he can play defensive tackle when you read this quote from the same article.

“He can be a force inside,” Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said. “He’s a big man, but he’s athletic and I think sometimes it creates a mismatch athletically with guards and centers. We’ve got to continue to keep getting him more and more reps inside and get him isolated as best we can.”

I'm a bit confused as to how this was a premeditated situation that we wanted to arrive at..but I appreciate your opinion..

Do you think that Ireland is operating under the theory that he wasn't responsible for final decisions while Parcells was here, cause if he could come out and say these last two years I take accountability for, and that's it, I would actually appreciate the job he's done the last two, but there is so much to speculate from a player evaluation standpoint, it's real rough to know what we have in the guy.

Could he have made that statement in reference to what would get him on the field most due to already having Starks/Soliai? Or when he said that he isn't sold on DT being his best position "right now", could that have been in reference to needing to bulk up more for DT, and that the current weight he's playing DE at isn't best suited for the DT position?

Does this quote really speak at all to how they view Odrick long term? Or was that more of the immediate?

Sorry DJ, did you mean to quote me? Don't understand what you mean by your first paragraph if you did.

Not really misleading, because all of what you see above is in reference to getting him isolated one on one on the inside on pass downs.

It's still misleading to think Coyle thinks defensive tackle isn't right for Odrick at all, though. Maybe he thinks Odrick needs an off season to prepare for the position. He did say Odrick may work as an every down DT.

He said he might work as an every down defensive tackle. As in, he doesn't know. But he might. Meanwhile, he declared it's not his best position.

So yeah, he's saying he doesn't want Odrick as a full time defensive tackle. He wants him as a full time defensive end.

Edit: Actually, I agree. I think as of today , or when he said that quote, he wanted Odrick as a full time DE. But I do believe he thinks Odrick can play full time as a DT, and could be a replacement for Starks if he walks.

I think the answer is what no one seems to be considering- Kevin Coyle likes having a big, strong defensive end like Jared Odrick. He likes having that more than he would like having a guy who is a better edge rusher, at least in the base package. This defense is pretty close to the same defense as the Bengals. They had Jonathan Fanene and others doing the same thing Odrick has done for a while now. They like having the flexibility to line up in a bunch of different fronts, and having a guy like Odrick allows you to shift between a traditional 4-3 alignment to a 3-4 or psuedo 3-4 defense.

Jared Odrick ended up sometimes aligned a little bit differently than the Bengals equivalent did this year, but I'd argue that is because of Cameron Wake being a left-side only guy. Could be they don't really care, could be they are planning on adjusting this through any of several methods which may or may not include moving Odrick.

They might want him to be a full time defensive end, but they're certainly not planning or treating him as such. He's a defensive end in the base 4-3, and generally moves inside in the Nickel package. It's possible they've got a hope he can be more than that, but they're not forcing him there.

Nick Saban went all world on the oline, found a downhill power back with some wiggle and beat the hell out of everyone.
