The CB group is indeed decimated. We now have three CBs rather than the usual five. As for trading a 2nd for Mike Wallace… not only is Wallace not on the market, as the Steelers refuse to listen to offers for him, but his tender is for a 1st and 3rd round pick. Lastly, when has Ireland ever flipped a trade? No, seriously—when did he ever trade one player and use those assets to acquire talent at another position? He sits on draft picks, just as Parcells taught him.
Ever glance at the int's our secondary have had through their careers? Yeah, they suck at it, VD was a lockdown Cb, who created int's, we got a #2 pick..next yr. That's nice..uhm..meanwhile..2012?
It's probably that, along with the belief that we could get an impact player at a greater position of need, like WR.
All of that is your opinion. Needless to say that most players would read this post and giggle. Cost us a game? He's won some for us before. Last time you could say that about a CB in a Dolphin Uniform? Surtain? Troy Vincent?
Sits on them so he can waste them. Jeff Ireland is the equivalent of a degenerate gambler who would rather buy a lottery ticket with 1000:1 odds than keep a sure thing.
24 years old , 3 years starting experience ... younger than some of our"young developmental" players ...yes he has been immature but he has made plays , and we are so roster full of them , it won't be a high number 2 imo and then we have our track record to bank on for that selection , and if that player is "good" a couple years to wait on him ... Can we fast forward somehow?

It baffles me how people are essentially determining this trade as a failure despite not knowing who the 2nd round player to be named later is. People are acting like we traded Vontae for an inferior player, but the fact of the matter is we won't know if this trade did or didn't benefit us until 2013/2014. If we end up with a All-Pro WR, will some of you still be whining about it?
I agree with this. I watched the Skins/Colts game yesterday and Indy's defense and O-Line looked really poor. Luck will have his moments but the rest of that team looked as bad as ours.
Look at Ireland's 2nd round track record. And when you trade a successful first round pick for a 2nd, it's a failure. Lost value. Lost talent. Ireland is a born loser.

Who's drafting that WR? Is it Ireland? Because if it is, i got some potentially upsetting news for you.
Trading a maybe future for a present isn't helpful to your team or fans now , IF they draft in a fashion unbeknowsnt to them it MAY be a good trade , several years from now .....
yes. The one thing Ireland has shown the past 2 years on his own is he has no problem trading up for offensive skill players he covets.
VD has been our best CB for the past 2 seasons. You can site current "Depth Chart" all you want, still doesn't change VD was the best secondary player we had the past 2 seasons.
This is just to much, Marshall and Davis, bright side we will have a Top 5 pick Downside, that is literally 10 months away, I'm glad though, this season goes bad Jeffy will be rightfully canned.
Most 1st round picks don't retain 1st round value. If they do, you likely aren't trading them. He was traded for a reason. Don't know where this "value" discussion is coming from. Maybe we should have waited for his blockbuster season at the nickel this year for his value to go up to 1st round status. Good trade from what I see. Very likely that value decreases in the next 1-2 years if we keep him.
Ireland makes yet another mistake and by trading VD it proves this. That he traded him for a 2nd (mistake) to a team that badly needs one, or that he made a mistake by picking him in the first place. I've tried to side with Ireland because of who he learned from but I'm growing tired of him lately....
Clearly he's not this year otherwise he wouldn't have been demoted. I'll take the coaching staff's opinion over yours though, no offense.
I really hate this move. You don't trade away one of your most talented players for an unknown quantity. Vontae may have had some issues, but he is a very talented player who was starting to play better. If I was the least bit paranoid I would be wondering if Ireland had some sort of vendetta againt Ross to ruin his team. We're giving up a good player, getting nothing in return for a whole year, and then depending on Ireland to draft a better player in next years second round. Yeah, right. All I can say is I sincerely hope it's not Ireland making that pick next year.
I am not an Ireland fan at all. But this move has this coaching staff just as responsible as Ireland. They didn't like VD, that was obvious. If there is a positive to take from this I believe this move shows that Ireland and Philbin are working together.
They knew they were trading him the whole time they most likely just didnt ship him out sooner for a lower pick because of the heat they got for trading marshall. It was obvious he was getting traded when the 1st depth chart came out.
I was always on the side of Irleand. I hate this trade, trade for the Future? this guy is 24 years old. Couple that with his own personal family issues this summer. I thought he deserved some more patience from us. Immature, yah the guy is 24 years old. Has shown in the past that when pushed responds. Seemed to be responding this offseason. This will drastically alter our d. Its no secret that we are stout against the run, VD had a big part of that. INTS, this team seem to hate them exept VD. I know we are re-building but with our D/soft sched, thought we would be able to maybe make a run, now its like why not trade Wake or Starks and load up? Im officially on the get rid off IRELAND band wagon. There is always next year. Cant believe I'm saying that 2 weeks before the season.
Yeah because a coaching staff moving a talented player because he doesn't "fit the culture" never happens right? VD demotion and trade, while somehow merited because of his lack of preparedness to begin the season and his attitude, its also because from the first moment, Philbin decided he wasnt going to like him. VD never had a chance.
Omar :Here is my take on the Vontae Davis trade after speaking to numerous sides on the issue. The damage was done, and now the marriage is over. A second-round pick is fair value for Davis. Nolan Carroll appears ready to step up his game, but Davis has Pro Bowl talent. Maturity issues are real, but the talent is there. Problem is you have absolutely no depth at cornerback right now and will need to comb the waiver wire for two respectable players.
He had a chance but he decide to suck wind and fake being okay while getting toasted. Guy is a waste if he can't take the heat.
I didn't know you had insider knowledge of Joe Philbin's mind... you really should have shared more with us earlier this year.
