Wow! Confirmed by Schefter.... Adam_SchefterThe Kansas City Chiefs announced today that they have traded QB Tyler Thigpen to the Miami Dolphins for an undisclosed draft choice.
Whoa. Not what I expected but now we have two quarterbacks with the ability to run the Wildcat as well as one being a pretty good backup. Have to wonder though, if Henne goes down or struggles (god forbid), if we go to a spread offense ala New England last year.
He may already be our best QB on the roster 18 Tds vs 12, 54.5 completion rate (wish this was higher). YPA is low. Wonder what we gave up, and clearly our FO had already scouted them.
this doesnt make sense, we trade for a mediocre QB instead of a good WR or DB Really thats all we should be trying to trade for.
It'd be hilarious if we simply traded the pick back to them ... we'd basically be giving up some crappy o-linemen for a QB with a decent future.
Tyler Thigpen is a very good QB for as young as he is. He is a good prospect. He did well against us last season on a very bad Cheif team.
I liked Thigpen when he played against us last year but the trade doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe its to put pressure on Henne to perform but can't that backfire? Also if White is active then won't that make Thigpen inactive every week as he is the third string. Bit of a head scratcher but as long as not too much was given up depth can't hurt but I agree if trading for someone there seems to be other positions of more need.
While Hes an OK prospect kansas City didnt have faith in him willing to trade him away for some undisclosed draft pick. No it's not a high one! What we needed to do was said before trade for some playmakers, is this front office so dense that they don't see the Problem with our wideouts. I love having young guys to groom however you need a STUD to teach them.. Also I think he goes to #2 and white goes to #3.. His wildcat days are over for this year..
I thought Thigpen played really well against us last year. I like the move, but it is very surprising to me. I really thought they would have gone the veteran route with Frerotte or somebody like that. Plus, I think Thigpen becomes #2 and White goes to #3. I also think, while we could use some playmakers, you just won't find a trade partner for somebody like that in the middle of the season (unless you're Detroit, like last year with Roy Williams - but that's the exception to the rule). IMO it's just not gonna happen now.
Well here is a reason we picked him up Im sure.. Seems he has some Wildcat training already.. (imagine him lining up as a WR and actually catching it deep) He did just that in Kansas City.. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcsQSBxiz9w"]YouTube - Tyler Thigpen: No Suprise[/ame] Seems alot of its against us! Also look at how deep he can pass and he looks very fast in decision making, and he can RUN!!
you could view this news as not exactly a ringing endorsement for Henne... but then with Pat White as our other QB, and him not exactly lighting it up in his limited opportunities, i guess i can see the need. Thigpen played well last year, given his surrounding cast. so long as it was not a high pick, i say welcome aboard.
IMHO fantastic move out of left field...Thigpen has a plus arm from what I see and I really do not get those that have said otherwise, he reads velocity well and has some touch...the kid is tough as a two dollar steak, mobile, and completed over 60% his senior year in college......this is a 7th round draft pick thrown to the wolves that did not get the deer in the headlights look and played much better the last 6 games or so that he started after a 7th round beginning...he grew and did not regress ala John Beck. He is young with big upside yet has played and is not intimidated by the NFL after coming out of Coastal Carolina for goodness sake.........keep in mind this guy is two years and a game or 3 removed from competing against the Elon's of the world. He has tools, and I like his makeup when he is on the field...he still locks on but his game is growing, and IMHO at WORST you have a capable #2 with some serious upside.....love the move.
i think he can be a real solid backup...and we didn't give up too much it sounds like so good move imo
I love it. Thigpen is a way better option than any of the free agents or practice squad players available. We were going to use a draft pick on a backup QB next year anyway. Why not use it on a guy who has already proven he can play in this league?
Looks like Parcells is keeping it all in the family so to speak. LOL. Seriously though, I'd love to know what the pick is. If it's anything higher than a 5th or 6th rounder I don't like it. Isn't Thigpen the QB that can only operate in the gun?
If I may add to your great post Ray, remember that this is the player that Minnesota had in their minds as their future quarterback if Tarvaris Jackson didn't pan out. They were going to try and sneak him on the PS because he was a seventh rounder but Herm Edwards and company snatched him up. Minnesota really liked him.
IMHO it was a good move, we were going to have to get another QB anyway and why not one with an upside rather than over the hill. He has limted experience but at least he is experienced. He probably does move ahead of Pat White since White is still pretty raw. As much as everyone has talked about Pat Whites prospects for the wild cat Thigpen maybe even better suited. At 6-3, 235 he seems to have a better frame for it and may present more options. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/T/ThigTy00.htm
I really liked this Thigpen kid last year... I honestly thought it was a mistake to bring in Cassell when this kid showed so much potential. Glad he's a dolphin. Hell, not to get to crazy, but this kid could be the future if Henne bombs (I really hope not). Great pickup.
there are probably 2 parts to this ... 1- we need a backup now ... and PW is not it - he is challenged enough with the WC 2- maybe the FO is frustrated with PW, per above ... I don't think this has anything to do with Henne ... give him 4 weeks and he will be fine.
You do realize we are 1 play away from Henne being injured and White starting? No this trade makes alot of sense IMO.
Or they know that Pat White is a developmental quarterback and isn't ready to start yet, which has been clear since even before we drafted him in my opinion.
I agree that this is not a reflection on Henne, we've got 13 more games ahead of us and we need to make sure that we have someone behind him in case of injury. White isn't that guy. In fact, depending on how Henne and Thigpen play out this season he may be entirely disposable by January.
This move says nothing about Henne, but it does say a lot about Pat White. I remember the Patriots were really interested him in the draft. Maybe we're hoping to try to buy that draft pick back, or something close to it, now that we essentially got Thigpen for free (the draft picks were supposed to get from KC cancelling them out)
Gotta say, this kid impressed me last year. We HAD to pick up another QB to fill out the roster...brining in a washed up Vet adds little value to the club's short and/or long term future with Henne getting the reigns now...you're not likely to pick up a quality WR this late in the season...so, I say why not? You keep your team "quarterback rich" with viable solutions at QB from three different guys (remember when our first string guy wasn't even good enough to make another roster?). Smart, smart move.
