Multiple sources are saying that Mankins and V Jackson want to be free agents or $10M to settle their part as plaintiffs in the court case. I doubt they will be but, this FA saga continues.

    Well away from here
Basically, they'll be Free Agents as I don't see either getting 10 million before that.

Mankins especially has been screwed over in NE and by the System in the NFL, 6th yr, and he has another yr of tag jeopardy ahead of him, he is also quite stubborn and could monkey up the deal.

Hopefully Mankins gets his release and lands in Miami. We already tried to tried for him, might as well sign him.

It's part of the Brady court deal, and it's being reported that they will get money instead of FA. If you gave it to them, you would have to give it to all franche tagged players.

Vincent Jackson as well. He really wants out of SD. This is just me, and it ain't gonna happen. However, I would trade Marshall for Jackson in a heat beat.

Edwards would be my choice after Sidney Rice. Rice at 25 is going to seriously get paid but him + Marshall + Bess + Hartline...wow, that'd be sick. Any Qb who cant throw for 3500 and at least 25 TD's with that cast = fired.

Jackson did it to himself. 2 DUI's and a gameday citation for driving without a license. I have no sympathy for him. SD's reluctance is to give him a long term deal in excess of his asking price (at least 10M per) is because he showed he could not be relied upon to be a good citizen off the field making the guaranteed money too risky. Mankins on the other hand has a very valid argument and NE is historically cheap with their vets.

Per rotoworld and Greg Bedard twitter:

Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have both requested exemptions from the franchise tag as part of the NFL's new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins have essentially done the same. Some reporters have made a big deal of the players' franchise exemption requests, billing them as potential holdups in labor negotiations. ESPN's Adam Schefter doubts they will be a problem, however. In a worst case scenario, the league could pay Jackson and Mankins money in order to "make them go away." Whatever the players would command is pocket change in the big picture.

Sidney Rice seems like overkill to me. Marshall, Harline, Bess, Gates, and Sidney Rice? Someone wouldn't be very happy.

If there was any sentiment in the front office for signing Vincent Jackson I would steer that toward Sidney Rice in a heartbeat. I think Rice is a star, and he's not had as much trouble as Vincent Jackson.

With Sidney Rice and Brandon Marshall as your starting WRs, I don't care who your QB is, he's going to look pretty damn good. And if not, rather than just cutting him, he should probably be drawn and quartered.

When theyre 14-2, they'll be very happy or theyre simply not very bright.

Well that might be extreme but yea something to that effect.

Personally, I like Rice a lot as well. To me he and Santonio Holmes might be the 2nd and 3rd best players available in FA after Asomugha this year. Rice is still just 25 and has good size and speed.

If somehow Drew Brees gets exempted from the franchise tag, let's just play Henne and make the third time the charm next off season.

Seriously, what could Manning/Brees get on the open market? $70 million guaranteed? $80 million?

Per Mort's twitter, Peyton Manning willing to play under tag this season but wants to be exempted in future if he and Colts don't work out long term contract.

Manning and Brees, both potentially on the open market in 2012. It's the NFL's version of the Summer of Lebron.

Even at 35, I'd probably still be willing to give Manning a 6 year deal at $70 million guaranteed.

Are we going to have The Decision? We should bring both in, have a big three of Marshall, Brees and Manning and then watch them not show up in the fourth quarter.

    Oops.

    LOL.

We'd probably find a way to blow it for the third time. "What can Drew Brees do that Chad Henne can't?" Tony sparano, January, 2012.

Heh, have Manning play the first 3 quarters with Brees taking over in the 4th, then play Brees in the playoffs.

Not true, only those demanding it of those named in the lawsuit.

    http://www.sbnation.com/2011/7/19/2282931/nfl-lockout-peyton-manning-drew-brees-franchise-tag

I don't see this as a problem at all save for the NE Pats and Bob Craft and from the way he has treated Brady and Mankin he deserves to get the shaft imho.

I was referencing Brandon Marshall. Your point is valid, but I've got some reservations as to whether Chad Henne could make it work.

That said, I just don't see this front office bringing in a Sidney Rice or a Vincent Jackson.

Yes, Roberto Wallace needs as much competition as he can get for that 5th WR job...

I fear you're right though. I hope he doesn't, but I can just see Jeff Ireland whiffing on this free agency period even though it could be teed up quite nicely for him..

At this tome next year if we are still looking for a qb, sparano won't be in much of a position to say anything. Three years starting is fair for any qb. I like Henne but if qb is a need go get brees, trade a draft for Luck or Barkley...whatever it takes.

Peyton Manning and Drew Brees Want to be Set Free

    http://mike-freeman.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6264363/30715015

Freeman reports that Manning is demanding the rescinding of his franchise tag for this season as a stipulation to his settlement. Such a move would make Peyton Manning a free agent RIGHT NOW.

Brees would be free following next season.

Suppose this were to actually happen.....What would the bidding war look like between us, Washington, Arizona, etc.?

Is there any number at which you could out price Irsay? $80 million guaranteed? Or even hgher?

There's still a cap. And Washington isn't exactly teeming with skill position players or o-lineman. But yeah, Snyder certainly has the cash to fork over an $80 mill bonus

We're Super Bowl contenders if we have Peyton Manning in the fold. How much is a Super Bowl worth to us? Perhaps we should consult Mickey Arison on this.

There's no way Manning leaves Indy. He cares too much about his public image and his legacy and all that crap. Its just more leverage to get one last long-term deal out of the Colts.

And Manning would still be a bargain compared to what Mickey is paying the Big 3. $300 million combined, fully guaranteed.
