Dolphins just announced the signing of former Washington OG Randy Thomas. http://www.miamidolphins.com/news/dolphins-sign-g-randy-thomas-waive-wr-ryan-grice-mullen thoughts?
Not a shock. He's a Parcells guy back from his days with the Jets. It'll be interesting to see how much he has left. Could be nice veteran insurance.
Hmm.. Depth maybe? I dont know much about the guy really. Makes me wonder if he's really an uppgrade anywhere, or just depth. I'm going with depth..
Probably speaks more of the indecision on choosing a backup RG than anything else. Thomas is an 11 yr vet that can man the spot if called upon....is he the Thomas of 5 yrs ago, no...but he'll due in a pinch....I just don't think they have much confidence in Proctor, Thomas, etc and Garner looks to be headed to at least the PUP, if not IR...
Dolphins sign veteran Thomas to compete for time at guard According to NFL.com While this looks like a depth signing, lets all hope John Jerry's knee heals up quick and we don't need to start retreads to fill a serious offensive line position..
Exactly, and they needed a insurance policy against Thomas being injured or playing badly, or Garner not recovering, or Incogntio blowing up. Randy "AllState" Thomas. And if he is not healthy enough, or in good enough condition, there are plenty of other G's roaming around looking for work in the NFL.
Solid veteran backup, not much more IMVHO. Guess we can scratch RGM off the KR/PR/5th WR potential list.
I don't know much about roster exemptions but I do know the Vikes got one for Harvin's migraines. Maybe we get one for Garner? Just asking.
Not at this point...he can make the final roster and then go on the PUP for the first 6 weeks...in that case, perhaps on the cutdown day there are only 4 WRs and then they re-sign a 5th the following day after putting Garner on PUP...he will make the roster, even if he's not back from the injury at that point...
i'm not sure it is a 'dissatisfaction' with what he sees right now ... vice we are putting a winning team together to win THIS year. with Parcells, we know that that means having veterans and depth. I view this as depth and not a knock on Thomas, Procter .... that is why is still believe that we will sign a veteran S sometime soon as a back-up plan to Clemons ... i believe in Clemons and that he will be our answer to S .... but belief and knowing that you have a 'known' back-up plan is a different story. OLB is another similar situation .... we have ZERO known quantities (not even Anderson) at OLB .... i'm just not sure the regime is going to settle for that going into this season ... even with improved ILB play with Dansby.
No he can't. To be eligible for reserve PUP, he needed to have been on active PUP at the opening of training camp. Once he took part in one practice he was no longer eligible for active PUP (preseason) or reserve PUP (regular season).
