This isnt the Wanny/Spielman run Dolphins. This regime values draft picks. They wouldnt spend a 4th round pick on Shawn Murphy and then go and cut him for the hell of it. If they released this kid, its probably for a damn good reason. There most likely was something up with Murphy that we dont about and may not know about since they keep a pretty tight ship in the front office. We still dont know what really is up with Matt Roth unless you really buy his groin injury explanation. I hope Murphy catches on somewhere else, the kid has talent obviously but something mustve been holding him back. Hopefully he corrects it. For now, lets hope this Murtha kid can block on ST and can be a nice fill in on the OL(lets hope it doesnt happen tho).
I would wait wait and answer this at the end of this season,I might add a few more on sunday though ...
Maybe im wrong but if we take a man off anothers practice squad, he is put on our active roster and we can't waive him after a week to try to get him on ours that fast ? so he is sp teams material imo. Edit: actually i believe we are stuck with him on our roster for the season , thats the way the nfl keeps us from raping other teams for there talent. I did find this maybe its accurate: Yes...here's the section of the NFL rule book covering that: "a player under contract to a club as a Practice Squad player is completely free to sign a contract with another NFL club during the season in order to be on the second club's Active/Inactive (i.e., 53 man) list. A practice squad player may not sign an NFL Player Contract with his Club's next opponent later than 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the sixth day preceding the game (except in bye weeks, when the prohibition commences on the tenth day preceding the game). If another club signs a Practice Squad player to its 53 man roster it does not have to provide any sort of compensation to the player's former club but it generally must keep the player on the 53 man roster for at least 3 weeks, thereby mandating that he earns in 2007 the minimum first year salary for said 3 week period ($285,000 prorated weekly). "
he is taking Murphy's spot on the roster he'll have to triple his effort to catch up but he is a member of the 53 we carry
i look at it this way, i think the FO is satisfied with Smiley, Thomas, Garner and Berger as Gs ... Berger doubles as a C ... maybe the FO liked Murtha a lot during the draft, and now they got him for next to nothing ... and they have Gardner and Murtha to develop. Maybe the FO projects Murtha as a G, much like Garner ... which automatically makes him better than Murphy (in size alone). i have no problem with this move ...
I guess my problem is the word "dumb" I have no doubt they invested ALOT of time scouting the guy..interviewing the guy...working out the guy...coaching the guy..motivating the guy..getting many opinions on the guy..then after all that...they finally concluded that he did NOT fit what they needed. To call this dumb BEFORE they drafted my be considered hindsight....to call it "dumb" after the fact is at best 20/20 hindsight and at worst nitpicking. I think you can wait till after this Sunday...and the one after that..and that...and that...I still believe the one positive column incredibly outdoes the negative.
Murphy to Tampa Looks like the winless Bucs were awarded Murphy. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/10/21/bucs-claim-shawn-murphy/
“Let me start by saying this: anytime you bring a young player in like that, like Murph, an offensive lineman, and you draft him in the fourth round, you, the head coach, has a responsibility to try to develop this guy the best you can," Sparano said. "I’m not proud of the fact that we had to let Murph go. "At the same time, we have to look at our football team and we kind of have to see what the best situation for the Miami Dolphins is right now, and I think that one of the best things that we could do was, seeing the progress that Murph had made, and knowing where he was right now, and seeing some of the other people that I had running around out there right now, and seeing where they were, led me to think that a tackle in the building would be a pretty good thing for us right now. And Lydon [Murtha] is a guy that we did in the draft, we spent good time with, and had really good background on.”
look for Murtha to used as a backup RT & immediately as a situational blocking TE this was a very good move by the FrontOffice
That is my point. How can you describe it as a dumb move drafting him? You put the time and effort in. Sometimes it just does not work out
This sure doesn't compare with the terrible moves made prior to Parcells and companies arrival. Seems like all the free agent moves and most of the drafts were efforts in futility. At least now we are putting most of our draft choices to use.
