Leodis McKelvin picked a good time to enroll in his first frequent flier program.

Just this week, the Troy cornerback is traveling for meetings with six NFL teams (Baltimore, New England, Dallas, Tennessee, Kansas City and the New York Jets). He already has visited Buffalo, Atlanta, New Orleans and Tampa Bay.
Some draft prospects would be road weary by now, but not McKelvin.

"I'm from Waycross, Ga., so I've still got a lot to see," laughed McKelvin in a telephone interview. "This has been a great experience for me. It gives me the chance to sell myself some more."

Not that potential suitors need much convincing. Judging by the teams showing the most interest, McKelvin will likely become a top 10 pick as the first defensive back selected April 26.

"Since all this started, I felt like I could be the best cornerback available," McKelvin said.

McKelvin starred at Troy on defense and special teams, tying an NCAA record with eight career returns for touchdowns (seven punts, one kickoff). He also excelled in pre-draft workouts at the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine.

Every team with a pick between Nos. 3 and 8 excluding Oakland -- which has no cornerback need -- has taken an active interest in evaluating McKelvin.

"There's not a lot to dislike," said Bills coach Dick Jauron, whose team picks at No. 11. "He's got good size (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) and speed. He's tough."

Said Eagles general manager Tom Heckert: "He's got everything you want. He's big, fast and he'll hit you. Plus, he's got return ability. He's got a lot of things going for him."

So how does a player receiving such platitudes land with a low-tier Division I program?

McKelvin said Troy was his best college option after he initially struggled to record a qualifying test score. McKelvin eventually gained admission and is now 14 hours shy of a bachelor's degree in sports and fitness management.
